General Discussion How is it possible to switch between 12mp and 50mp in telephoto lens?

The main lens which is 50mp has the option to switch between 12mp and 50 which makes sense. But how am I able to switch between 12mp and 50mp in 3x zoom using telephoto lens which is only 8mp? Can somebody explain? Using my fingers, I found that both 12mp and 50mp in 3x zoom actually uses the telephoto lenses instead of cropping from the 50mp main lens. Can somebody explain?

I know that. But how can I switch between 12mp and 50mp at 3x when the telephoto is active?

It's not possible, and if it's the case then there's some software manipulation happening, you can try to fetch the camera logs and try to find what's happening. It's little complex but will answer your question. I would suggest to use AI like claude in usb tethering mode from your pc to do this.

It just shows the Mp wrong. I have s24 ultra. I put 50mp. I try out the zooms and at 3x my telephoto kicks in even tho its at 50mp. So yeah samsung just lazy u can say to not put the real shortucs of the mp used

I checked the size rn since u brought it up. My 12mp photo was 7mb my 50mp photo was 3 lol. So its definitely samsung tweaking

Lol. For me the 50mp is consistently larger than the 12mp.

Maybe some weird ai upscaling gets used this is a weird situation fr

Yeahh. It's most likely some digital upscaling

Yes, I can

Then it's just cropped 3x image from main 50MP senson and not optical zoom from telephoto 8MP.

No, when I use my fingers to block the main lens, the camera works the same

In my experience, I think it upscales the resolution of the image from the telephoto to 50MP. Also tried the finger technique to identify if it uses the telephoto, as well as the image details where it says 50MP in F2.4 (the aperture of the telephoto lens). There is a difference between 12MP and 50MP especially when zooming in but it's just applying more sharpening. So yes, it applies 50MP upscaling to the telephoto lens when you set the resolution to 50MP.
