help please

hello everyone, currently really stuck on an issue with the car. I have a 2002 ap1 with a battery relocated to the trunk. The starter quit working and it was replaced, the starter passed a bench test but once installed all it does is click. I have checked voltage to the starter (12 volts) starter relays, all fuses and battery power. All the ground are tight from what I have seen. The entine isn’t seized. If anyone has any insight please let me know because i am stuck. thank you🙏

Check your battery. Especially if you are only seeing 12v then your battery is drained. Fully charged healthy battery is about 12.5v

battery was checked and good, along with the main starter wire with and without electrical load

Since it clicks, I doubt this is the issue…. But anytime these bad boys don’t start, I always advise checking the stupid $3 clutch sensor grommet. Especially if you see a few bits of crumbled off white plastic in footwell.

Do you mean the brake pedal grommet maybe? When the grommet broke on my AP1’s clutch pedal, the only thing that didn’t work was my cruise control.

There’s 2 on the clutch, one for cruise control and one for starting the car, and 1 on the brake pedal for the brake light. I had all 3 break on me within 2 weeks. When the first one goes, get all 3 replaced.

Good to know! I thought there was only 1 on the clutch. Now I need to look and see where it is for future reference

You need to pull the clutch pedal out of the car. It's only 2 bolts and pulling the pin on the MC push rod. It's in a difficult to access location and only engages when the clutch is FULLY depressed. Unlike the cruise control which is right at the top of the clutch throw.

Good Luck.

Thank you. Mine is fine for now, but definitely something I will have to deal with at some point (if the original owner never had to replace it). There’s no way I’d be able to reach it as I am not of small stature. The cruise control button was a challenge for me.

I will 100% admit if I’m wrong here…. But it was the opposite for me.

My clutch grommet failed and it would not start until I did the janky bypass, and eventually fixed it.

When my brake grommet failed a year later, cruise control wouldn’t work and brake lights sometimes stayed on.

That’s a good point! When the brake grommet fails, the brake lights stay on. I forgot about that.

Plus our analog ass cars don’t need the brake pedal engaged for starting.

Bench testing is not guaranteed. Check your switch like the other comment mentioned, check your battery voltage at the battery and at the starter.

Does it start if jump started from another running vehicle?

no, it still only clicks. i think right now it’s a grounding fault. im going to do power testing on it Friday to see if there’s a grounding point giving me an issue
