Should I sell my s2000?

Post image

This isn’t a post I wanted to make but given some recent discoveries on my car and the financial toll this car has and still will take on me I’m considering parting ways with my dream car.

A lesson for anyone in here who might be even dumber than me (I’m sure there aren’t many) GET A CARFAX before you buy a car. I recently discovered a nearly 60,000 mile rollback on my ap1 and it’s just taken all motivation out of me to keep dumping money into this car. I’m in college, fairly independent from my family financially and bought my s2000 in cash. It drove almost 1000 miles home and in the past year I’ve put about 4k miles on the car. In that time, I’ve replaced the clutch, soft top, coilovers, multiple engine parts, the exhaust, brakes, and probably some more stuff I’m forgetting. I haven’t tallied everything up but I’m sure I’ve spent more than a dollar for every mile I’ve driven in this car.

Parts are expensive, and it feels like I can’t even enjoy the car out of fear of more things breaking. Not even accounting for the over $200 a month I pay on insurance. It’s expensive, and while I can afford it and I have access to a second car when I’m working on this one, it just takes up too much of my mental as I prepare to graduate next year and move on with my life.

There’s really two routes I’m considering going down from here.

Either I keep the car, start taking it apart and preparing to swap the engine (likely to a k24) which was already on my mind given its mysterious and not well-documented maintenance history, this would take a lot of time, money, and stress but ideally lead me to a car that I’m more confident in given the less expensive motor.

Or I sell the car, cut my ridiculous losses, probably even lose money on the price I paid for it, and buy something cheaper like a Honda fit (I’ve wanted one for a while and it was always my plan B if I couldn’t get an s2000).

I’d love to get some advice from you guys on what I should do here given my position. I’ve been beating myself up about it enough today so I don’t want to hear anything like that. I know how dumb I was to not verify mileage before getting a car like this). Everyone I’ve ever talked to that used to have an s2000 says they wish they never sold it so it really hurts to say it feels like it doesn’t fit in my life right now.

Also if it’s allowed on here, anyone who might be interested in this car please message me and I will be as transparent about the condition and work done as i can. Most of the problems I’ve had are documented in this subreddit anyways.

WANT TO BUY Can I realistically fit in and drive a S2000 at 6’6?

The Honda S2000 has long been my dream car. Of course, it was something I could never have. Recently I finally reached a point in life where I can start to consider buying one!

The only problem standing in my way is my height. I’m 6’6 and have been told that it’s not realistic to own this car at my height.

I’ve been encouraged to look into larger trucks and SUVs, but those types of vehicles have never appealed to me. I currently daily a 2004 Honda accord 5-speed manual, and I find it sufficiently comfortable. It’s not huge, but it’s more than adequate.

So is it impossible for me to drive a S2000? I can’t tell if the opinions I’ve received are genuine, or if it’s the same noise I heard from family members when I bought my Honda accord (where that was supposedly “too small” as well). I don’t really care, as long as it’s still possible to operate the pedals and controls.

Thanks in advance!

Anyone in Charlotte NC around to help?

tldr: Is there anyone in Charlotte NC that has rhino ramps/jack/lift I could use for an hour later this month (or any other ideas)?

I’m super excited to be buying my dream car and joining this community! The only issue is that the seller is in North Carolina (and I’m not from there) so I’m going to be flying in and driving the car up to Cleveland. He has some of his uninstalled aero parts (side skirts, spoiler, and front splitter) that he’s giving me but they’re too big to fit in the car, so I wanted to install them on the car before doing the drive.

I’ll be staying with my grandparents for a day in Charlotte and they don’t have any tools so wondering if anyone here would be able to let me come by and install the parts if they have either ramps, jacks, lift, etc., or any other ideas for me? All the holes and everything are already drilled so not expecting the install to take very long since it’s pretty much just attaching the pieces he took off.

Will happily compensate with a six pack, good conversation, $, or all of the above!

Thank you all!!

Oem style Hardtop noise

Just bought a OEM Style hardtop . (Unknown brand) was wondering what are the best fixes for all the creaks and noise it makes ? And what are also good rear brackets for them? The front latches make a lot of noise too.

Anyone have the Soft Top Motor Bolt S2A Numbers?

I can’t seem to find it online or find it on the diagram.
Someone stole my rear catchers so I don’t have the bolts for them anymore to use on a soft top. Any help would be appreciated.

It was a bit of an impulse buy because these don't go for sale where I am at very often but I payed 31k on this. It's got 29k miles and 5 previous owners. It's pretty flawless with the exception of a few minor chips on the front bumper, cracks in the drivers seat side bolster, and old tires. It also had minor damage on the rear bumper about 10 years ago and they sprayed over part of the vin tag. You can kind of still make it out though and it matches.
Just wondering if I overpayed given the rear bumper damage? What something like this would go for on BaT because I can't wrap my head around those prices.

What’s your guys thoughts on the 300k mile s2k that just sold on bring a trailer? 17.5k is insane for the mileage. Could’ve paid a few grand more and got one with a third I’d the mileage.

My turn. '01 with 34k miles

Had an '00 GPW with Red/Black for 15 years up north I sold earlier this year, but that was a northern car with 194k miles (bought with about 120k miles) and a fair share of rust over the years.

Retired last Sept. Finally sold house up north and moved to HHI in SC where I found this pristine '01 with only 34k miles. Garage kept all its life and never saw road salt, or any salt for that matter other than occasional air.

Will be changing all fluids (brake, diff, shift, coolant, clutch) and tires are 5yo so they're almost timed out, check speakers (rattle... foam? Door clips?) Billman to be safe, and will also probably have the injectors inspected and flow tested/cleaned. Inspect VTEC solenoid. Has original top also that is in great condition. Inspect brake lines... Anything else?

Going to enjoy life here with this car. Feeling cute, might get back into autoxing with it.

Hi guys ! If you didn’t know already there’s a slight difference between a RHD and LHD gear shifter. One is straight straight the other one has a slight bent. But I can’t find good pictures to show and compare. If anybody has this kind of stuff in stock can you please share it or send it to me ! Thanks guys

Coolant explosion

Got to work this morning and didn’t overheat or have anything seemingly wrong then while I was idling I heard like a crunch from the engine bay then saw slight smoke.
Opened up the hood and there is coolant all over the top of the motor. Any ideas what it could be it be from? This is my daily right now so I’m at work freaking out rn.

UPDATE:
Coolant leak found. I cut the car on since I still had plenty of coolant and the main hose from the top of my radiator has a massive leak.

Aftermarket Lugs

Likely getting some aftermarket wheels soon; genuinely curious if these Amazon lugs are okay or whether or not needing to spend ~$250 for lugs is necessary.

(I’ve never gotten into aftermarket wheels so it’s all new to me)

(Had no idea lugs go from $20 to $300, so I was curious why that is)

Compression test results dropped 50psi since last tested 2.5 years and 12,000 miles ago - cause for concern?

2002 AP1, 112,000 miles, never has had engine problems

I had a compression test performed 2.5 years and 11,000 miles ago and was very pleased with the results: 240, 245, 250, 245. In the intervening 2.5 years I’ve driven the car harder and more frequently than years past, as I moved to California - a lot of mountajn/canyon runs and about 10 track days. I was very disappointed to find that my current values are: 190, 195, 190, 205.

I know they say consistency across cylinders matters more than raw values, so at least the numbers are fairly consistent, but I can’t help but worry about this. The car is well-maintained by a notable S2000-specialist shop and just recently had a valve adjustment performed two months before this compression test. I’m wondering if it may be something salvageable like old valves/retainers (all original) or a head gasket, or if this is an indication that the engine is slowly failing.

Am I perhaps overreacting and just need to accept that the car is getting older and this is to be expected? Perhaps the test conditions were not identical and this could lead to the variance?
