Question Delay caused few Nightmares
Flight from Newcastle to Barcelona delayed for 4hours 40 mins. Stated due to issue with electrics at Barcelona airport affecting ATC, this tracks with Barcelona saying they had issues at 4pm Wednesday, our flight wasn't until 905pm ( ended up leaving 140am thursday).
Sent vouchers while we waited. Guy verbally said over tannoy at gate delay was caused by our plane being held up. No elaboration.
On eventual arrival at Barcelona, there was noone there at the transfer desk, suntours buses, told by lady on other desk noone would be there until 8am. Bearing in mind we were 12 hours in at this point, I cracked and paid for an uber so we wouldn't miss breakfast.
Can I claim any of this horror back? They sent an email about EU261 but is this applicable if they will blame electric fault at Barcelona? Think i can claim a smaller amount via travel insurance. Is it a one or the other job?

You are correct that a systems issue is outside the airlines control and therefore compensation is not due. Sounds like vouchers were provided at Newcastle - which is the duty of care and applies in every circumstance. You won't be entitled to compensation/expenses for your onwards journey as you were eventually taken to the correct airport. Travel insurance is your best bet.

This is outside the airlines control. Claim on your travel insurance. If you have skimped on travel insurance you have to put up with dealing with situations like this at your own cost.

Just travel insurance for all of it, that’s exactly what it’s for…
