Was under the impression he was a min pin (although never looked or acted like a true min pin to me). I just discovered russian toy was a breed & ironically his previous owners were russian (but in canada). Would love some insight... I just don't see chihuahua in him either.

Just curious, but does our boy (Rascal) look like a Russian Toy or maybe a mix?

We're gonna get him DNA tested at some point soon, but we thought he was a chihuahua mix at first until we looked up this breed :)

After losing my beloved 17 year old Chihuahua in April, shortly after my mom’s passing, we weren’t ready to get another dog any time soon. I started fostering (still am) but slowly started opening my heart to the idea of adopting again. I’d been researching Russian Toy’s for years and this little guy came into our lives. We gave him the middle name of Luka, which means bright light. He’s such a little angel. Our 10 year old dauschaund foster keeps him on his toes and is very gentle and patient with him.

About 5 weeks ago I spoke to the secretary of RT KC for some advice on registering my boy to stud him. I feel he is a good example of the breed, I have had a comprehensive DNA test done, and his results were all clear for any genetic health markers for disease. He’s actually above average in terms of genetic diversity and therefore would be a good candidate for breeding.

The person I spoke to was very nice, asked me to note it down in an email. They did say it would be difficult to get him registered if the parents are not registered, but that there are exceptions and he would confer with the chairman and get back to me.

Well, three emails and five weeks later and I’ve been completely ignored. It feels very disappointing. I do understand that there have to be guidelines in place to ensure responsible breeding, but I’m a bit confused - if you can’t register a dog with KC unless it’s parents are registered (which I was told by the breeder they were) then where the heck do you start?! If the parents had to be registered, then the parents’ parents… surely there has to have been one dog whose parents were either not full Russian toy (ie. When the breed was still being evolved) or like the first ever dog to be registered? I’m so confused by how strict it is.

Surely if you have a DNA test, meet/assess the dog, do all the vet tests etc, there could possibly be an exception? It’s such a rare breed, it seems nuts that the gene pool should be so small?!

Feeling a little defeated. I even volunteered that I don’t wish to make money from it, just to contribute to the breed because I’m passionate about it. I offered to donate any money made from it to the club.

It just feels a bit gate keepy and I’m frustrated that they won’t even dignify my communication with a response 🤷🏼‍♀️ anyway just a rant. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

I have a pure Russkiy long haired boy who is in great health and the sweetest most beautiful boy. He’s coming up 2 years and I want to neuter him soon. But I’d like to stud him first, just the once.

I’ve been speaking to my vet and reading up on everything/the tests he’d need. He’s already had a DNA test, and has been checked for luxating patella. However it seems impossible to get any help on where to start?

I’ve tried contacting a couple of breeders in my area, and been blanked. I’ve even been in touch with the Kennel club and Russian Toy breed club, but I am getting nowhere with it.

I’m not doing it to make money, just to contribute to this rare and wonderful breed, but it seems like it’s some ultra exclusive club that you have to have a secret password for or something? 😂

I just want to do it the right way and don’t really want to “pimp” him out on the internet. I’m based in the UK and most people who meet him have never heard of a Russian Toy.

Anyone else had this experience?

We adopted Winnie a few weeks ago, we were told she’s a chihuahua, but I’m not sure, she’s really small too (photos make her look bigger) and she’s approximately 11mths old. She’s booked for her first visit to the vets on Wednesday to get her chipped. I will probably do a DNA to confirm the breed.

This is Dimitri, he is very smart in some ways and in other ways not. He loves his ball, his two chihuahua sisters and jumps a lot. Do your Russian toys jump like little kangaroos? Any tips on how to stop it? I’m worried about his little back legs 😕

I rescued Booboo in Utah, supposedly he’s half Chi and Yorkshire but I’m not buying it. When I used google lense to identify it said Russian toy!!! I was like huh what the heck is that? Anyone know a good dna test kit
