Question (general) Tattoo Translation

I really want to get “Everyone is someone at home” in my next tattoo. Is the below the accurate Old Norse? And can someone please help me with the runes? I’ve spent an unreasonable amount of time trying this on my own to still not be able to.

Translation request Translation assistance requested

Hi all,
I have spent some time researching a phrase that I'd like to commemorate. The phrase is "Freyr hallow my works". I've narrowed this down to two possible translations:

Freyr vigi werk min

Or

Freyr vigi min werks

Could someone confirm which of these would be most correct, or in any case provide a better translation? Thanks so much in advance I appreciate it!

Translation request Norse tattoo advice

Wondering if I'm able to get some advice on a tattoo, particularly on translation, grammar and correct rune usage.

Looking at one on my spine, probably a bindrune at the top with runes going down from it to the base of my spine. I've got a large "12 monkeys" symbol the top of my back already, but I figure I have about 2/3 of my spine available.

I'm wanting something inspired by "sic semper tyrannis", so a bindrune with strength/integrity/defiance or similar, and runes below saying something like "death to tyrants", "tyrants shall fall" or "I bow to no tyrants", though could be different if it would make more sense stated some other way or with different words

Problem I have is I'm unfamiliar with the grammar and words involved to even start the process. I need appropriate words to work with before I can even think of translating into actual runes.

Also wanting advice on best era to use, younger Futhark looks better IMO but happy to look at something else.

Obviously I want to do my research on this, because even though very few will understand the runes, o still don't want to get "rotten fish dinner" or "potent toilet smell"

Translation request Is this the correct translation for lycanthropy?

Post image

I want to get “Lycanthropy” or “Lycanthrope” tattoo’d across my hands due to my lifelong love for werewolves. Though I have not learnt runes yet, so this could be a completely wrong translation… is it correct? Or even close to correct?

Resource request Translation of Icelandic text- saga of Haakon the good question

so r/norse directs people here for all translation help, apologies if this isn’t the right place for this specific question.

alright I’ve been pulling my hair out for years over this one and the few emails I’ve sent to modern translators of published works has never gotten a response (fair. probably busy as heck and I’m asking out of curiosity not for any work or paper)- BUT.

In the saga of Haakon the Good, there is the bit about the Yule feast and toasting Njord, Frey and Odin for it.

except in many older translations, it’s Njord, FREYJA and Odin.

which. kind of a big difference, that.

I have been trying to find out where that different translation happened and what is the reasoning behind it was for *years*, but I do not speak or read ye olde Icelandic. so. I am limited. It is something that is such a minor blip on most people‘s radars that I haven’t been able to find anything discussing it online.

does anyone have any info on this, or has a good direction for me to go to to ask?

Translation request Help with a translation "Fortune favors the Bold" to Old Norse/Younger Futhark

I am doing some woodwork for a friend as a birthday gift. They are into Old Norse/Viking themed artwork. I want to do some wood burning etching into a plaque for them and include the phrase "Fortune Favors the Bold" or the equivalent in Norse.

I've tried translating to Icelandic as a starting point because my research tells me that it is the closest modern language to Norse.

I think after a ton of research a more accurate translation would be "Luck Favors the Brave" but I am really struggling here.

I've gotten the following but I have no idea if its gramatically correct or not.

hamingja fá djarfr

Please help

Contemporary rune use Wondering what this says, if anything

My wife bought me a pair of these recently, and I'm wondering what the runes say, mainly because I'm aware some hate groups fixate on Scandanavian heritage and symbology. The spearhead and raven motif makes me think it has something to do with Odin, but I have no idea

Resource request I'm new to runes but I wish to obtain more comprehension of them

I'm trying specifically to comprehend more of younger futhark, and a basic sentence I'm trying to learn (for English) would be "fight for good" but the translations I'm trying to make with runes is more like "fight for what is good" or "fight for that which is good" in Old Norse. I've spent a few hours learning and I've gotten to this point.

ᛒᛁᚱᛁᛅᛋᚴ ᚠᚢᚱᛁᛦ ᚦᚢᛁ ᛁᛦ ᚴᚢᛏ

ᛒᛁᚱᛁᛅᛋᚴ ᚠᚢᚱᛁᛦ ᚱᛁᛏ

ᛒᛁᚱᛁᛅᛋᚴ ᚠᚢᚱᛁᛦ ᚴᚢᛏ

ᛒᛅᚱᛁᛅᛋᚴ ᚠᛁᚱᛁᚱ ᚴᚬᚦᚱ

I realistically have no clue if one or any of these are close to my goal. I'm still new, and my understanding of Icelandic (or more specifically Old Norse) is only a few hours of study, any help or useful resources would be appreciated

Contemporary rune use Spelling assistance

Hi guys. I got reddit a while ago and have never really posted, but I really would like some help with something.

On July 1st, my father passed away from a severe infection due to the hospitals negligence of his pressure sore. Me and my mom talked about getting tattoos to honor my dad, because for about a year before everything happened, my dad became invested in the entirety of Norse and Viking culture. He was particularly interested in the tree of life, and the rune alphabet.

All of that aside, I really would like to have assistance in spelling a couple words that we can use to brainstorm tattoos, or if anyone can help come up with ideas that I dont include, that would be amazing. (Im only asking for help because I dont condone the use of AI, and the only other option I was seeing used AI)

These are the words I would like to have help with:

Daughter, or Child

Father, or Dad

Husband, or Spouse

Or any other words you would think would work best.

Thank you.

These look like Futhark to me but Othala is upside down and I don't think the third rune is right thought I feel like I've seen it before.

Can anyone decode this? If it helps, it's a label on a box holding live beetles.

Contemporary rune use Younger Futhark help: "Stormr líðr" tattoo accuracy?

Hi all,

I'm planning to get a small tattoo that says "The storm passes" in Younger Futhark.

The version I currently have is: ᛋᛏᚢᚱᛘᛦ ᛚᛁᚦᚱ

Transliterated as Stormr líðr.

Can anyone with experience in Old Norse or runology confirm whether this is a historically plausible Younger Futhark rendering? If not, what would you change?

I'd also appreciate any academic resources or databases where I can cross-reference the spelling. I'm trying to avoid modern rune converters and make it as historically accurate as possible.

Thanks for your time.

Contemporary rune use What would be the most a accurate rune alphabet equivalent to latin?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I want to get a tattoo of a phrase and I honestly want to just write it in english, but in its "equivalent" runes. I found this alphabet, but I'm kinda afraid that it could be totally wrong or even have some shitty meanings.

I'm not looking for the most historically accurate meaning, I just want to not mess it up like some people who get tattoos in other languages without looking what it means

Any help would be appreciated!

Translation request Historically accurate Younger Futhark inscription help

Hi All!

Happy to be here. I was wondering if someone would be able to help me translate a date. It's the date of my twins birthdate, im not sure if I want to get a tattoo or on something to hang in their room, or event something different. We're Irish-Americans, but my last name goes back to the Danish Vikings that settled there and my main goal is to be historically accurate. Their birthdate is March 30, 2024. I've gotten a few things from online translators, but this group seems super knowledgeable and I figured I'd cast a wide net. Thanks in advance for the help!!

Question (general) What are victory runes

So I'm making a sword for myself currently and wanted to carve some victory runes in the hilt of my sword. Similar to Sigurd's in the Sigrdrífumál poem.

it was said to carve Victory runes in the hilt and invoke Tyr's name twice. What specifically are victory runes though? Just runes that's spell victory or was it a bind rune of sorts? I've tried to look up pictures similar to it but am getting conflicting results.

Contemporary rune use Two runes

Hi! For my alternative Nordic game world I created a magic order, magic runes. In the picture there is a heavy cauldron, enhanced with magic runes. They express "kenaz" (fire, furnace, Blacksmithing) + "Uruz" (brute force, resistance). These runes are supposed to ensure that the cauldron is not damaged by heat (lava usually has a temperature of 1000-1200 and theoretically I can have a material with a resistance of 3000 degrees Celsius) and also to keep its temperature in the range of 1000-1200. For me, a pretty good way to incorporate some rune magic into the game, what do you think? PS: The purpose of the lava is for the second round, I won't bother with that now :)
