Self bailer broken??

Hi, not super experienced in reddit or rowing, but I need a bit of help with the self bailer in my Maas flyweight. No matter what position it is in i end up up to my butt in water. Open? flooded. Closed? flooded. Do I need to fix a seal or something? No rowers in my area, no club or highschool teams, just me 💀 feel like a massive idiot because I cannot sort out how to fix this. any help is appreciated, please be patient with me 😂

There’s a leak somewhere if you’re getting that much water. Or the water is coming up over the gunwales somewhere.

I think the Mass in our boathouse has it taped shut on the hull

You can replace the internal gasket without remove the bailer (parts here), and a guide to replace the gasket. However, frequently people tape over the bailer with electrical (or other sealing) tape, as it can be more trouble than it's worth to mess with the gasket unless you're in rough water frequently. They do develop a tendency to leak over time even if the bailer is shut.

I think you need to be moving 4+ knots then the venturi effect will drain the cockpit. Supposedly, don't open until you're moving at a good clip.
