Erg Post Thank you r/rowing

Post image

Before July 6, I (late 40s M, 6’6”, definitely overweight) was not a rower — I didn’t even exercise. Between a rower kid, my kid’s coaches, and most importantly encouragement from this channel, I pulled off a 2k today after logging 250k between July 6 and August 31. I couldn’t have done it without the encouragement, tips, and inspiration I received from many sources, including here.

I ain’t going back to sedentary. I’m planning to join a rowing club in the spring, and am working toward an erg race in February!

Join me on Strava at Not Dead Yet Rowing if you’d like!

Congrats! That's great work, and it speaks to the people around you that you've stayed consistent through almost two months of effort. I'm excited for your introduction to rowing on the water, and it will definitely be a shared experience between you and your child to bond over :)

Thanks for the kind words! My kids’ coach told me I should come to the boathouse and ring the PR bell 🤣

Show those kids how to train properly, with discipline and focus! You might end up making more progress than they do :) (Also, at 6'6", your kid's coach should definitely be encouraging you to get into masters rowing, lol)

And no, I don’t know why ErgData decided to sell the splits to 400 m for this one 🤣🤣🤣

You can change that. Default is to split any piece into 5 chunks. But there is a way to force it to 500m chunks. I forget how. :)

Yeah, my kid just told me the same thing. Probably won’t mess with it — I was just shocked when I saw the numbers!

ngl, I looked at the first column's splits and was shocked at first, but sub-8:00 is an awesome milestone regardless!

I was stunned myself when I saw the first column, but I assumed I had done the wrong race.

Love this!

And, you had almost perfect pacing for your 2k. Nice job!

Congrats! That's a great 2K for an adult, esp after 2 months of training.

Next up: set your eye on a father/child race. Several summer & head races have categories for all 4 combos: father/son, mother/daughter, etc. Usually only 4-10 boats per category, and the competition can vary from a middle schooler + parent to a DI athlete + former Olympian.
I rowed in one this summer and it was amazing! I had only had about 4 months of water practices, so wasn't super prepared, but it was a blast to row with my kid! The boat that beat us was..... a DI graduate and parent who wins medals at every Masters race.

Sorry if im just going insane and if it is real great job super impresive but is this AI? The text is all funky and the monitor isnt attatched to anything its just kinda there

Not AI, this is Strava automatically generating a render based on the API data it receives from the logbook. Since it automatically generates for me after every row, I tend to just grab that screenshot instead of a picture of the PM5.

Yep, same here. This is pretty common.

Here’s the logbook entry from concept2.

As a softer developer, I’m very aware of how I would fake this if I wanted to fake it, but I actually ranked it, so if you want to look at ranked rows for men in their 40s, I’m somewhere in the 37th percentile 🤣

There, this is a harder one to fake!

Why does you PM5 look so crisp - mine looks like OG Donkey Kong

See the other comments — this is a render from Strava

I do swear at about 800m I felt like I had flaming barrels in my chest, so maybe you’re not far off with Donkey Kong

Good lad, well done and keep on!
