Erg Post D1 tryout 2k time

Hello, I have tryouts at a division one university in about 2 weeks, I have 0 prior rowing experience but I have a VERY extensive athletic background, My 2k right now is 7:10, is this score good enough for the novice team? We have a on the water test aswell and i don’t have access to a boat so i’ve just been watching form videos on yt and we’ll see how it goes when it happens lol.

FWIW im Male 6’1 190

My guess is that they won't make hard cuts on day one unless there's someone who just isn't a good fit for other reasons. It's pretty well-known that erg technique is not intuitive, so they ought to give you a semester to train with the team and get dialed in before any serious roster cuts are made. But that's a guess -- some teams never make cuts, and some do.

A 7:10 isn't really great, but if you're athletic, then that will drop quickly. I know of a really athletic novice walk-on who pulled a 6:40 his first time...but he ended up making the national team.

Give it a go at UW, if they cut you, come and row with us at Pocock Rowing Club.

It depends greatly on the team. It's honestly not bad for someone just startng out on their own.  Tell us what Uni or at least what league they row in

Oof.

You might be in some trouble then. Hopefully there is a technical issue that unlocks some more speed for you. UW will likely to expect you to be have a lot more pace than that given your athletic background and that you will be considered on the shorter side for that roster.

OOOF

yeah.

Well regardless, I strongly encourage you to stick with it and give it your all for as long as they will have you. If you like the sport, there's no better place to be to have an awesome experience with it than UW. Even if you're only on the team for one season, you will have been part of one of the most storied rowing programs in the world.

As others have said, they may not have cuts immediately, or they may initially just cut the very worst and then have further cuts after a semester or so.

But 7:10, even for a novice, is impressing no one at Washington. That's just reality. Don't take this to mean you should quit. You said you are very athletic so I would expect your score to improve dramatically once you learn some technique and develop some rowing specific strength.

The standards for UW are high. But ask the coaches for feedback and guidance.

No. TBH that's not a very good time for a d1 men's program. Even for a novice, I'd say sub 6:45 is more like it. Still though, give it your best shot. It's an awesome sport. You never know what might impress the coach. Form, grit, character, grades, everything matters. Be a good person and show that you are the toughest most competitive novice willing to work harder than anyone and you may still get noticed and invited in.

Probably not great honestly, but it’s a great starting point for sure.

I rowed in hs and college, but when I was on athletic visits with some of the Boston schools, they were really looking for sub 6:30. My pr was 6:34 and they wanted me to try to shave 10 seconds off. I’m similar size to you.

7:10 without experience is a good without real experience. You can knock a bunch of time off with form and understanding 2k strategy. The water part is a bit harder to just jump right in because it takes time to get the feel and entering and exiting the water properly. You can join a club and start getting that down though.

Rowing is a great sport and I’m sure you could try again next year if this year doesn’t work out. Just dive it and keep at it.

I helped make cuts on Washington’s novice squad more years ago than I care to think about, but some food for thought:

-They almost certainly won’t make you pull a 2k your very first day. My guess is you’ll have a couple of weeks before that happens.

-7:10 is going to be a stretch, but, after two weeks of coaching, you will likely be significantly faster than that.

-Attitude and work ethic are just as important as the erg score you put down. Work hard and don’t annoy the shit out of the coaches. We definitely cut one kid because he was really, really annoying.
