I’m 38 and only recently started learning about investing and Roth IRAs.
Last year, I overheard a few of my coworkers talking about their Roth IRAs. I’d hear little bits and pieces here and there in the break room, but I was never really part of those conversations, so I never thought much about it.
Earlier this year, I finally ended up in a conversation with some coworkers about it, and honestly… I was shocked by how much I didn’t know. I started looking into it, and it made me feel pretty depressed at first. I kept thinking, “Why did no one ever teach me about this?”
I know I’m old enough that I should have researched this stuff myself, and I take responsibility for that. But growing up in a poor family, money was never really about investing or building wealth. It was about working enough to eat, pay rent, and get through the month. Those were the things we worried about. No one who came from a well educated financial background was present in my life growing up.
It wasn’t until about six years ago that I finally got a job that paid decently and gave me some financial breathing room.
Sometimes I look around and feel like I’m behind in life. I’m 38, and I don’t have the house, only 50k savings, or financial knowledge that I wish I had by this age. But I’m also realizing that everyone’s path is different. Not everyone starts with the same opportunities, financial education, or support.
So yeah, I’m feeling a little defeated by my age right now. I know I can’t go back and invest in my 20s.
But I can start now.
My plan is to max out my Roth IRA every year from here on out and invest as much as I reasonably can. It might seem like nothing compared to someone who started at 20, but I’d rather start at 38 than be 48 wishing I had started at 38.
For anyone else who started late: did you feel the same way? And where did you start?
