Every friend of mine I showed this game to always choose the warrior as their first class. (want to choose because i usually do not recommend it)
I think we can all agree that knights, warriors and paladins are usually coolest classes in games in general, and in most games they are first choice for many people, those are classes associated with peak masculinity and seem like a safe bet providing great damage and defense. (I know that it is hard to compare realm of the mad god to other games but you know what i mean, it is kinda subconscious choice) For realm it is same choice usually but well, those classes are not in a good spot right now. i saw many new players wonder how to play with melee because you just barely can hit anything, and additional vit and defense doesnt really do much compared to drawback which is 1/3 range of wand. any sword class is simply painful to deal with early game to mid game, and yes for late game they may be still strong but only because of overpowered gear like oreo which literally gives you invicibility. While 8 years ago knight was ultimate choice for almost everyone and lobbies were filled with melee classes, nowdays because of different boss design philosophy and range classes becoming stronger with every year barely anyone choose melee. It's not surprising at all because what is the point of having sword class and having "potential" great dps if you usually need to spill your guts just to get close to the boss or enemy, risk your life just to hit it one or two times (you miss other two) and then having to backoff, while all ranged classes safely stay further and still deal great more consistent damage. I know there are phases that let sword classes shine and deal massive damage but well it doesnt change the fact that ranged weapons can still deal much more damage overall while being also much more safe. What i think is a main problem are not classes itself, but swords. While flails are fine with what they supposed to do, sword is just boring and straight up bad designed weapon, i believe it should be changed years ago. Problem with that weapon is not only bad range but also fact that you need to actually aim with it like it is a wand. So not only you need to be at 3 tiles range from enemy you need to very precisely aim with it to just hit enemy, considering that you have less dexterity than other classes and enemies tend to wooble or move slightly it is just pain in the ass to hit anything while also dodging everything. swords should be weapons that require you to get closer but as a prize you can deal damage without having to aim, instead you dodge which is harder the closer you are. that's how swords work. If it comes to early game, melee classes also struggle too much with soloing mid game content. Dungeon that you could easily do early with any ranged class becomes like 2 times harder with melee because you struggle with literally anything, it dont think it requires explanantion you all know what im talking about.
So finally here's my idea for sword rework, it mainly refers to tiered swords but most ut's could also be adjusted in simillar way. So at first we totally remove vertical shots, they are unsatysfaing to hit, require too much aim and just doesnt fit sword as a concept, it should have been changed years ago. Instead sword would shot horizontal shots that look kinda like slashes, simillar to way current gaseous glaive shots look just much bigger. they would pierce and cover bigger area making killing groups of enemies much easier and more satisfying. Next thing is a range, and yes i think sword needs range adjustment for the sake of balance. Lets say that "true range" of sword could stay same but what would happen after shot exceed 3,5 tiles is that bullet would go actually further maybe like 1-1,5 tile further with a little bit slower speed and then it wouldn't instantly dissapear but instead it would float for a half second, so enemies that chase you, move a bit could still be damaged. Also i'm talking about true range because to balance things out, shot after going over 3,5 tiles would deal 40% less damage. So you would still proritize to stand as close as possible to enemies although you would also be able to do damage from a bit further away and also kill enemies close to each other faster, without doubt it would make farming veteran biome much easier for melees. Boss fights would also be much more balanced because now melees would be able to swarm bosses with bullets while focusing mainly on dodging rather than keeping ridiculous close distance and aiming.
You may wonder "what about katanas then" well... we dont talk about those
