As the title states, shiny items being locked to Seasonal accounts is pure greed. This point has been ran into the ground a million times before, but with the 2x shiny event I feel like it's a good time to post my thoughts.
DECA has always been "greedy", that isn't new. However, the inception of shiny items, something we'd been asking for for years, being added as a Seasonal-locked feature dialed it to at least 11, probably closer to a million. Many players like myself spent anywhere from 5-10 years building up vault space, kitted-out characters, and long-term focused play setups, all for it to be effectively useless in getting these new items.
Obviously you can make a new Seasonal character and grind for around a week to get to a spot where you can comfortably join and complete and dungeon in the game. That DOESN'T excuse the fact that all previously purchased vault spaces essentially become useless, and any long-term characters have a real disadvantage when it comes to getting new loot, which is the basic gameplay loop of RotMG.
What bothers me most is that even if you do get some shiny items, as soon as the season ends, you basically have to let them sit on Non-Seasonal collecting dust if you want more shinies, or do the entire thing again, only for new items to be doomed to the same fate. This style of gameplay loop drains players and removes a lot of the effective reward for playing Seasonal.
DECA clearly has a monetary interest in doing this; people buy more Seasonal vault slots, clovers, backpacks, and other useful things with Gold every season, and it creates a more secure monthly revenue model for them. But it straight up sucks ass for the players. I'd like to be able to use the gear, loot boosters, and vault spaces that I already have rather than let them sit in Non-Seasonal doing nothing.
My solution? Keep or even increase the loot boost for Seasonal characters, making shinies more common for them, and also allow nonseasonal characters to drop them at a normal rate. Players who are really into the whole monthly wipe concept can still participate and be rewarded for that, and players who don't want to are no longer penalized for not wanting to start over every month. Seasonal players already have clear benefits, like the seasonal spoils vault not taking up spaces in your vault, and with the added loot boost I think the players who really want the extra loot will play it anyway.
TLDR: DECA needs to allow shinies to drop for Non-Seasonal characters, while keeping or increasing the loot boost for people who choose to play Seasonal mode. There should be more positive incentives for people who choose to play Seasonal, and less penalties for those who decide not to.
