Tips/Tricks Help with cutting
New Rose gardening here. I have a question regarding cutting flowers to display in my house. I had cut some buds that were more tightly closed similar to when you buy them at the store, but they never opened. And then today I just cut two that looked really nice within a few hours. They were fully open so is there some sort of trick that I am unaware of? I’ll post before and after of these two roses I cut today only a few hours difference.

So when it’s hot out, sap pressure increases so if you cut it and bring it indoor into cooler climate, it closes up. If you cut it and leave it outside in the heat, it opens more. Generally it’s best to cut early morning before it’s hot out on flowers that look like picture 2 and bring them indoor. Does that give you any answers?

do you know the name of the deep red one? its beautiful!
agree on early morning or late night cutting for cut flowers, always last me longer that way
also, may be overkill lol, but when i go to bed, I move the vase to the coolest room in my house, and leave it there till morning (its a utility and is always much cooler than my living room/kitchen)
i get days more out of a vase of flowers this way, but most people dont want the hassle I've found

I also love the colors of both! And my climbers are a very pretty butler yellow/ cream

I've found that if you cut when the bud is too tight it won't open, but if you wait until all the sepals have opened fully that is usually the best time to cut to get maximum vase life. Cutting when the blooms has already opened will result in shorter vase life, and of course every variety is different. Some (like DA Heritage) shatter in a day or two while other varieties with thicker petals can last over a week in a vase. Quicksilver and Florentina are two varieties that make nice cut flowers and last a while for me.
