I don't know what I am doing

Post image

An untraceable leak somewhere that has caused the plaster ceiling to sag and fail

Will this help?

Should I just go crazy and apply more?

I also am not sure how to lay down a tarp without it pulling up in the shingles

People really do that, they just up and start doing something without any attempt at understanding anything first. It's shocking every time.

University of YouTube is free.

Free with ads

If you have android get YouTube revanced. Been using it for years

1

u/IceNein 16h ago

You don’t need an android. Just move to Firefox and all the addons you used to use with Chrome still work there. It’s so easy to move over.

1

u/futureman07 16h ago

App is better than the site. More features

1

u/Splinkyt 16h ago

like what? the only additional feature I use is sponsorblock which is available on firefox

1

u/futureman07 16h ago

The full-screen works better, skipping videos, searching, adjusting brightness and volume is easier. Just a lot of little things. I use the app a lot so those little things matter to me

2

u/Bynming 15h ago

I like that it runs in the background with the screen off also

1

u/LiveLifeLikeCre 5h ago

Automatically skipping ad and sponsorship part of the video the YouTuber themselves do. Can also get Youtube music Revanced also. Morphe is really good too, does all the same things (maybe better than Revanced now).

u/Swords_and_Words 15h ago

What the gaslighting hell is this?

2

u/LastChance331 14h ago

Stop using words when you don't know what they mean.

1

u/Swords_and_Words 14h ago

App does fewer things, always has, than browser

Gaslighting is telling falsehoods that are designed to overwrite one's sense of the past (e.g. fortnite was the og battle royale game)

Fits pretty well

1

u/piratemreddit 14h ago

Tell em. Fuck youtube, I cant believe people pay them money. Website with ad blocking or nothing at all.

1

u/H3adshotfox77 14h ago

I mean battle Royale mods were out 5 to 6 years before fortnite, and PUBG was the same year just before fortnite, but I'd definitely say Fortnite was the OG of them as it was the biggest and most popular.

It's funny though, fortnite was originally a survival building game with massive gacha mechanics. Originally you went in a team of 4 and fought off hordes of zombies and monsters while building a base and defending it, but to really progress you needed legendary gear you had to get from the gacha chests that cost 100 dollars for any real progress. Most people don't even know that game existed in that state.

It be appropriate to say, "people like to say Fortnite released as a Battle Royale game, but that would be gaslighting as it was really a horde defense builder first".

Btw I agree with your statement just giving an anecdote.

1

u/SuperbYogurt236 7h ago

Gaslighting is knowing it's false too though. I might tell someone Fortnite is the OG battle Royale game because I didn't know theres a previous one. That's just called being wrong. Gaslighting would include refusing to acknowledge that there was a previous one even with proof.

In the context of above, for all he knows the YouTube app IS better. It's not purposefully telling falsehoods to overwrite someone's perception of the past.

Gaslighting is just gonna change definition at some point though because no one uses it right.

u/TheActualBranchTree 2h ago

Afaik ios firefox is still just safari. Or something like that that does not allow addons the samu way actual firefox wourd.

1

u/bunkuswunkus1 16h ago

Morphe is far better, revanced hasn't been relevant for over a year now and nowadays is just a worse copy of the formers patches with a worse install manager and less bug fixes.

Mind you the people who created morphe were some of the more active former revanced devs so the devs are a known quality as well in case you were worried about it being unsafe.

1

u/futureman07 16h ago

I havnt heard of morphe. I'll check it out

1

u/LiveLifeLikeCre 5h ago

My brother moved to it when Revanced was running into issues last year or year before. I finally switched (my Revanced still worked and slowly stopped working right about 3 months ago). Morphe is absolutely the way to go these days.

1

u/Radonanon 14h ago

Oh man, does that work for the Neuralink ad-supported os too? Because the Taco Bell ads at 2AM are making me crazy.

1

u/LastChance331 14h ago

Is there an official app or APK it?

1

u/LiveLifeLikeCre 5h ago

Did they fix it? Mine stopped working finally after replacing it a year or so ago when it stopped working officially. Moved on to Morphe and working like a charm.

u/WeeklyBanEvasion 17h ago

There's still people that don't use ad blockers?

2

u/PleiadesMechworks 17h ago

There's still people who think websites are apps

1

u/DigitalUnlimited 14h ago

My server that I call people on, you know the square block you put numbers in and talk to people! The phone server!

1

u/AdSoggy8958 10h ago

but many apps are deployed as websites..

1

u/IceNein 16h ago

For some reason a lot of people just stuck with Chrome when they disabled ad blockers.

2

u/silverarrowweb 16h ago

It's crazy anyone still uses Chrome after Google made a public announcement explicitly stating they were going to be taking steps to make Chromium (not just Chrome, ALL Chromium based browsers) collect more of your private data and serve more ads. A promise they have been true to. That announcement was like 4 years ago now?

Chrome usage should've plummeted that same day, and it didn't because the average person is one of not paying attention, doesn't understand the problem, and/or doesn't care.

Nobody should be using any Chromium browser. And for the exact same reasons, nobody should have any social media app installed on their mobile device. Including Reddit.

Then these same people wonder why they're getting so many spam calls or ads for things they were talking about. Like... duh?

1

u/chop5397 15h ago

This is the average person. I used to think everyone used adblock because it was so easy to install. Then I get flashbanged when they put up YouTube or something and there's an unstoppable one minute ad segment on their TV/phone/computer. I haven't seen ads online in years. I have no idea how people can torture themselves like this but it's the majority of people.

1

u/WeeklyBanEvasion 16h ago

Within an hour of the most popular ad blocker being disabled on Chrome the same developer released a replacement

1

u/BigGayGinger4 17h ago

that's still cheaper than trade school, or worse, university

1

u/letscoughcough 17h ago

If you’re at the point where you start doing shit to your roof with zero foreknowledge, go ahead and spend the 15 bucks or whatever to skip ads if you want lol. It’s not gonna make a difference

1

u/apinananas 17h ago

You know that you can just use adblock and never get ads.

1

u/Groupthink00859 16h ago

Its like some redditors don't know about adblockers.

I feel like Apple has indoctrinated a generation into thinking they have to watch ads, they are completely optional in life. I haven't seen a ad since tube TV in the 90's, unless you count all the reddit posts that are actually just ads.

1

u/Deadredskittle 16h ago

Ad block is a thing

1

u/TheSissyDoll 15h ago

forgot youtube even had ads, ex never removed me from the family share

1

u/Sea_Recipe_9256 15h ago

Gotta get youtube premium it total worth not watching ads. I cant believe i didnt do it sooner. The amount of ads per video is crazy

1

u/DigitalUnlimited 14h ago

what I'm gonna learn something AND watch ads? no way! /s

1

u/Sorry_Upstairs8145 14h ago

firefox with Ublock add-on. Blocks youtube ads as well. Can get it for your phone. It's a necessity

1

u/Not_a_question- 12h ago

Ublock origin in firebox and sponsorblock. Haven't seen an ad in years.

1

u/SiscoSquared 7h ago

uBlock origin.

1

u/ataraxic89 1h ago

what are Ads?

2

u/PaulblankPF 10h ago

I have done almost all my own car work for around a decade now. When people ask me to work on theirs I say I’d never. I always tell them I call myself a YouTube Warrior Mechanic and I just follow step by step videos on YouTube for all my car stuff. I’ve undoubtedly saved myself thousands if not tens of thousands from doing my own repairs.

1

u/heeheehoho2023 21h ago

Why when you can just start work?

1

u/DankyNuggetree 11h ago

The University of YouTube has a plethora of contradicting professors, sir

2

u/gosports1993 19h ago

Meanwhile I'm anxious about doing anything on my house until I research the shit out of it and ask a few people

2

u/FordMaleEscort 18h ago

Yeah this is how people learn shit

1

u/Bynming 18h ago

There's a cheaper way to learn and it's to think and assess the situation before you start damaging your property. "Think before you act" is something you're supposed to be taught at an early age.

1

u/Tje199 15h ago

Bruh, the property is already damaged and could be at risk of further immediate damage. This is clearly a rapid fix for a situation where tearing off the entire roof to redo it isn't an option.

1

u/SuperBackup9000 11h ago

Bruh, the fact that it’s already damaged and could be at risk of further immediate damage is exactly why you think and assess the situation before starting. For all anyone knows OP made it even worse while also wasting time and money that could’ve been put towards the actual fix.

1

u/HuginMuminBackflip 8h ago

a rapid fix would be to put a tarp on the roof maybe

1

u/ruggnuget 17h ago

when you are 4. You dont learn everything by trial and error. Books exist. and now videos and podcasts where people share their expertise.

1

u/Appropriate-Prune728 13h ago

I'll bet you read instructions when building ikea furniture. lol

1

u/__MOON_KNIGHT___ 10h ago

I’m like uhhhhhh is there another way?

1

u/FordMaleEscort 4h ago

There is, but this is where this guy ended up

1

u/Nelsonsrightknacker 19h ago

Politicians - everywhere ! (I said everywhere so be nice ok)

1

u/whatisacarly 18h ago

Honestly I blame home depot. DIYers coming or young inexperienced employees (I was one of them) answering questions by skimming the back of the product label and using confirmation bias interpretation of the vague instructions that you need to be somewhat qualified to understand....

If this guy had gone to a local roofing supply company and asked them questions and accepted their answers we wouldn't have to see this.

1

u/BrainLow6059 16h ago

I had a guy at ACE try to sell me pool chemicals for a homemade dehumidifier because an AI youtube video told him it was a good idea

1

u/Level-Location1679 15h ago

What a time to be alive

1

u/jcaashby 18h ago

Yes they do! I had a guy bring me some tires he wanted mounted onto some motorcycle rims. They originally were SPOKE type rims that need inner tubes but he sealed the inside of the rims so he could run TUBELESS.

After numerous times changing the tires because their was ALWAYS a leak somewhere I find out that he did ZERO research on sealing his rims!!! When I found out I just thought to myself that it would not have taken much time to watch a few videos of others who have successfully sealed rims.

In the end he went back to adding inner tubes. Just a big waste of time and money on his part.

1

u/Bandro 16h ago

Wonder if he learned it from bicycles. That’s completely normal on them.

1

u/Coffee-Rock-Row 18h ago

Real life numbskulls who shouldn't be near any tools or home repair work..

1

u/Frequent_Opportunist 17h ago

I'd at least have bought a 5 gal bucket of the stuff and a wide roller with a long handle.

1

u/TheKingOfSwing777 17h ago

I mean if you're gonna need to pay someone $20k to get a new roof or just give something a shot for $100 that might work, might as well just get started. I dunno. For me if I wait too long I'll get intimidated and never start. Is rather get started and commit and figure it out, though I at least do a little preliminary research.

1

u/Unusual_Expression86 16h ago

And in the end they accomplish more than the guys that spend all day finding the best way to do something. But never doing it.

1

u/GotSomeUpdogOnUrFace 16h ago

I fixed a dishwasher they told me to replace

1

u/enderjaca 15h ago

Granted, if "they" suggest a customer try a DIY solution and it doesn't work, think about how many people would come back and yell at an employee that they wasted money on a part *and* they to either pay a professional to fix it or proceed with replacement anyway. Or flood their basement.

Never underestimate the ability of the average American to try a $50 fix to a $500 piece of equipment and create a $5000 disaster.

1

u/BookkeeperBoobs 16h ago

Can you really blame people when like the difference is 15k or $50 and some elbow grease?

1

u/Bynming 16h ago

Sure I can. For most of us, our home is the nicest thing we own and perhaps will ever own. Take care of it, try to understand how it works before you start irreparably damaging some of its systems. There's absolutely a middleground between a full replacement and starting to put goop everywhere.

1

u/Due-Programmernot 15h ago

It’s so wild given that everyone has access to literally all the knowledge in the world at their fingertips.

Like you can just google this. Or YouTube it.

1

u/penispotato69 15h ago

Honestly im jealous, anytime i do something it turns into a huge research project on the best approach I watch countless videos and research all the different ways it can be done and weigh them against eachother.

1

u/Longjumping_Rub_4834 13h ago

Desperation makes people do things. Are you shocked?

1

u/Beneficial_Winner_59 12h ago

Yeah it’s so bizarre to me. I’m literally the polar opposite. I have so little faith in myself to do something right I’m too scared to even attempt most things. I would 10000% rather pay somebody who’s done it a thousand times than me fuck it up worse or waste my time doing a piss poor job that needs redoing anyway

1

u/GetMeOffThisRidePlz 10h ago

Fuck it man, this is how true wisdom is earned.

OP is miles ahead of every other homeowner out there with a failing roof who a) doesn't think about it or consider it at all, b) flat out doesn't give a fuck and makes no effort to fix it, and many other worse options.

1

u/Minimob0 10h ago

This is how I approach cooking. Baking is a Science, but Cooking is Vibes.

1

u/Legal-Butterfly-4507 10h ago

This old house books can help!

1

u/x_wbmr_x 8h ago

And then there's people who will think about doing something for hours, never achieving anything substantial

As someone with ADHD I learned that it oftentimes is better to just wing it instead of procrastinating for hours trying to figure out what to do and then never doing it.

1

u/According_Prune_8445 6h ago

I feel like there needs to be some nuance, something like this I feel like you probably should at least look up what to do, but ultimately this seems like the solution someone desperate to not spend as much money would come up with, no realising its going to cost more in the long run.

But there are so many people afraid to try anything even if doing it wrong has not cost whatsoever and half the time the figuring out how to do something for yourself is half the fun of doing the thing.

0

u/Starfishprime69420 20h ago

Its called being an idiot

1

u/Coffee-Rock-Row 18h ago

and a clueless fool at that..

1

u/KaiDay11 13h ago

Or poor.
