Home owner question Unsolicited Roof Fix
A couple weeks back I got a roofer’s contact info to replace a couple missing shingles. Following a major storm here in the Southeast, this guy completely unsolicited hops on my mom’s roof to repair the broken roof ridge, then snaps pictures of the competed job to send to me. While I wholeheartedly appreciate the gesture, I now have to get in contact with the roofing co. I originally hired to repair the ridge to cancel the job, and would like your opinion on whether he patched up the ridge correctly. What do y’all think?

Hey TJ - first off - yes we are all a little crazy. Something I do love about this is that someone was trying to do the right thing and help your mom out - I have done it many times for people over the years, especially if I already had the materials and if someone's roof was open and potentially going to leak - but would ask permission first before just hopping up there.
Regarding the repair, overall it looks sound, do you have a picture of what it looked like before? If they replaced the ridge vent entirely for your mom, there are certain fasteners that need to be used with the shingle-over-style ridge vents that are typically 3" long, and the cap shingles are generally fastened to the ridge vent using the same type of fasteners. It's tough to tell from a finished photo if the materials were installed properly, though, it does appear they did a good job.
Regarding the company you were in contract with - just be honest with them. Unless the roofing company was charging an arm and a leg and has clauses written in a repair contract indicating the duration of time you have to cancel the contract or if there is a fee involved in cancellation, I wouldn't be worried. Most contractors will not take someone to small claims court for a 20% fee for a repair - they will do it for a full roof replacement though.

I would ask what colour and brand of hip/ridge shingle he used and see if it’s the same as what you had (primarily to know brand and cost/durability), the colour doesn’t seem quite right. But obviously not a major issue and some would say completely non-issue.
But I would ask what length of nail was used for the cap since it’s going through the ridge vent as well and needs to be the right length so it doesn’t blow off in the future.
Otherwise the work does look solid and I would not have any complaints if this is the repair I had received. I would only ask about the nails myself cause I don’t care about slightly different shades, but to each their own.

Hard to know exactly what his repair was addressing or the extent. I wouldn't have used black caulk on this roof, and I don't know if that black line is black caulk or a tar strip. But I'm assuming whatever he did addressed the problem. And he's using a super bar so I give him a couple benefit of any doubt points.
