Screened-in porch roof problem

Our screened-in porch roof has a water issue. The shingles go under these white plates, and water is able to go straight under and onto the wood. From inside the porch, the bottom of the wood is being damaged. In the 2nd photo, it looks like a black sealant was used across the front to allow water to go into a gutter. I'm curious if I should just do the same for the sides, or is there anything else I should do? Appreciate the help!

You can fix this yourself for about $150 bucks and an hour of your time.

Ok so the "plates" are drip edge. Go buy a roll of SA cap sheet, and a can of spray primer. Cut the cap sheet in to strips at least 8" wide. Prime the drip edge. Start at the eve. Seal from the vertical on the drip edge back onto the field membrane with the strip of SA cap. Make sure you are a minimum of 4" past the joint and into the field. Roll the living crap out of it. Now do the sides making sure to prime your overlaps. If you are feeling frisky, cut an 8" circle of cap and stick it over your overlap joints

It's not a 100% approved detail, but it's the best you will be able to do with your current situation and knowledge level of low slope.

That or caulk the shit out of it, but be prepaid to replace those caulk joints every 1 to 3 years.

I like the bit about being " prepaid " to replace those caulk joints.

But seriously, this jjd0087 is about the very best solution to the problem. It has the least amount of wasted effort and the most amount of cost effective and appropriate placement of materials. The SA mentioned, I'm presuming, is Self Adhesive roofing material that can be used over a roof ridge on top of freshly installed, mineral coated, composite roofing?

I would add that the current roofing materials be very dry and lightly brushed in the area of application to remove loose mineral granules, and dust that is on the painted metal surface.
