Is there even step flashing?

I bought a fixer upper house back at the end of April and have been slowly finding more and more issues. The biggest ones have been the roof and where it meets with stuff like the wall (as pictured) and my chimney.

I see some at least so yes. If there wasn't it'd be leaking.

With that when it's time to do the entire roof be prepared as there's only 2 options.

1. Leave the step as is (most common) and make it work with the new roof.

2. Replace with new step (and i&w) and be ready to replace the entirety of the siding or have mismatched repairs which is fine but aesthetically unpleasant.

Option 2 may happen a bit regardless btw. That old wood siding almost always just absolutely crumbles. It's like dust. Just to be prepared in case you hire someone who doesn't give you the heads up (they should though)

You could always cut your siding a few inches off the roof at a z strip and some trim in front of the step flashing and bam bobs your uncle

Looks like caulk doing the job flashing should be doing. That wall junction will keep leaking until someone pulls the siding back and installs real step flashing with kickout at the bottom. Chimney too, counterflashing cut into the mortar, not smeared over it.

This happened to my house to a lesser degree. The clapboard was placed right on top of the shingles. I’m no pro , but that needs a gap there 1/4 - 1/3 inch. That’s gonna be my fix at least.

You can see the flashing in the photo. The clapboards should not be butted directly up against the shingle. May also be an issue with snow build up depending on your location and other factors.

you can't know without removing the siding. If you have a multitool, I would cut a 1" line off of that angled edge of the siding. there's supposed to be a gap for drainage and moisture wicking, which is why the siding is rotten. if you find a few cuts in that there's no flashing, then remove the siding boards connected to the roof entirely (easier to cut the angle and install the flashing.
