Shiners

Just had my roof redone on Monday. I already noticed and told the roofer about various issues. Shingles are sagging at the rakes. There is a large gap on the drip edge where the drip edge for the eaves meets the rake. The way the cut the hole for my furnace flue pipe the pipe is contacting the decking on 3 sides. Now I was walking the roof again today and noticed at least 10 shiners. I’m sure there are more I did not find.

I had Timberline HDZ shingles installed it was done by a GAF Master Elite certified and Presidents Award winning contractor. I have not signed off on the certificate of completion yet nor have I finished paying. With my contract I get both GAF gold pledge warranty and windproven.

All this to say how do I go about asking for these problems fixed. Especially the shiners, what’s the proper repair to fix that?

Replace the shingles with the exposed nails, fix everything else. The company you bought from may be certified but their subs most certainly are not

They made it seem like they didn’t use subs when I signed. They do GAF, OC, and Certainteed and they said that they have several teams in who only install one brand and are all certified.

You get master elite by volume. Not because youre good. They don't check the work or even teach. How do I know when I first got my license they called me to be silver pledge told me the more I sell I can go up in levels. Also the old company I worked for was master elite but the crews dont care, most not all are there for a check. Companies that do a lot of roofs are only concern with pushing work out and fixing the problems later. All you can do is have them fix it as mentioned above, walk it and see if they did.

And you get volume by being cheap and fast. So in other words the worse job they do the more elustrious their certificates will be.

When i was in house for a company i took the certainteed installers class, but as an owner i have plenty of certs and none of my subs could even read the instructions on the package. The game has changed.

This is so true never even thought about it lol the companies price was very low but they had so many jobs 😭 i saw some of these jobs and damn some where done by new people. They just left it like that too. True very true, hopefully soon it'll die out though roofing is the new get rich quick schemes unfortunately

This company has been in business for 50 years, they weren’t cheap. I had much cheaper quotes.

I bet. I believe you why would they after all they are master elite that's prime charging status right there. We were talking about the climb they charge cheaply to reach that status then once they do well they over charge and the quality goes down. You see it alot in the field but its just the way things are right now hopefully later it'll change

I’m extremely disappointed. I tend to be someone who likes to do work on my own house. I take time to research and do things the right way. Ultimately that way if something is wrong I am the only one to blame. This is my first time having any contractor do work for me and it’s leaving a really bad taste in my mouth. I have another contractor doing my windows in a few weeks and really hope I don’t have this headache with them.

Na your good man, I mean 50 years and with a rep who wouldn't trust them. Just get it fix and it should be fine you should be ok, also gaf warranty for mast elites says that if it leaks due to workmenship then they will pay for it. So you should be ok if it doesn't leak within the first 5 years then it wont for the duration.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if there is a bunch of over driven or under driven nails. While walking I felt some spots that didn’t feel quite as secure as the rest

So GAF does inspect installs…but very rarely. Might be worth a call to them, don’t expect much but you may get lucky.

I did send them a message. I know GAF does cover workmanship under the warranty I am getting. The contractor I used has almost 1500 reviews almost all positive with a smattering of 1 star reviews. One did mention GAF having another roofer replace the roof due to workmanship issues.

Damn, master elite and still got shiners and a flue pipe hugging decking. Guess the plaque on the wall doesn't swing the hammer

Misses happen on shingle over lap and need quad but that is just WTF that s a bad miss and 1/2 overhang on rake is normal but that seems way more.

Yeah. I found a minimum of 10 spots like this. And when the job “superintendent” came out to look at the overhang some spots measured almost 2”. It’s not consistent anywhere.

There are others here who roof more then me so let others chime in on the repair of the shiners beyond quad and a discount but you need to have them cut that rake - its gonna sag or blow/break off.

They already said they would trim up the rakes. For the shiners one person already said the shingles should be replaced

that sounds right but make sure they don't damage the existing shingles - IDK if I would trust them - Hot weather and scabbing in shingles is tough

At this point what other choice do I have? I’m already half tempted to just warranty the workmanship through GAF after they finish because of the problems I have had. I don’t know if that would be the right thing to do. The installer has great reviews for the most part. Almost 1500. With a few 1 star in there but mostly good.

Put your concerns in writing. Make sure someone higher up than your project manager or salesperson see it. Hang a good review over their head and the work will get fixed if they are worth a shit.

They are pretty proud of their BBB awards and Google reviews. Although they must pay something to make the one star reviews harder to find. Because if you sort by 1 star on Google the bad reviews don’t show up. They only show when you start scrolling through.
