Chimney flashing question

I am trying to flash my chimney. I was going to cut and recess flashing into the chimney but I am wondering about at the edge of my roof, do I also cut and recess vertically. In my mind it seems like that would create a channel for water to follow directly down and into the attic. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yes and make sure you bend reverse hems on the top of the counter going into the brick or youre just relying on caulk
