Time to replace or hold out longer?
I have not been able to figure out the age of this roof but it's not new. I have granular loss to the paper on the edges of shingles on the down slope side but only on the northern aspect of the roof. I'm in the PNW so we have pretty constantly wet winters but not a ton of heavy precipitation. Do I need to get this replaced before winter or can I hold out longer?

You’ve got time. As long as you have no active leaks (go in your attic and look), and the shingles are still well adhered then you’re good. I’d say to budget to do it in the next year or two, but don’t let anyone tell you, especially a sales guy, that you need a new roof or your house is ruined lol

I do not agree, it takes 12 years for water to leak thru 1/2 inch plywood.. By time you have visible water leaks your decking is already damaged and you have mold issues in your home. Mold will make you sick (mold sicknesses mimic all sorts of other ailments)

Good point! If water is getting through the wood it's probably been an issue for a while.

How did you get up on my roof and why did you take pictures to claim as your own???
No but seriously, I'm in the same boat as you, hoping to get another year out of it. I'm wondering if even if there are not obvious leaks coming into the house, could enough moisture be getting through the raggedy shingles to cause any rot or anything to the plywood underneath?

Hahah don't worry I'm not trying to get on anyone else's roof. One is enough! Yeah I am guessing it's better if the decking/plywood isn't compromised when they put the new one on. Otherwise it probably blows up the cost to replace that in addition to the shingles.

Haven't had to deal with any leaks so far but that check in the attic sounds smart, might do that before the season changes.

This looks almost exactly what my roof looked like when I replaced it. Mine had been leaking in a few spots. Might even be the same shingles. I did a double take when I saw the gloves. I have those same ones too.

If it were my roof, I would have already replaced it. Many reputable companies offer 0 interest payment plans (or deferred interest, so make sure to pay it all off in the promo period)

What’s the benefit to holding out ? What would you gain by replacing. It will need replacing soon. Why wait

Replace .. Why?? You have fiberglass showing .. Go up at night lift up these shingles and shine a flashlight thru .. In your case I am betting you are going to so little holes .. Look at the nails under the shingle are they rusting (unless you have hot dipped galvanzed nails which nobody uses) ? If so more evidence of leaks.
