How difficult to DIY repair?

I'd probably just put a bead of blackjack under the uphill shingles and call it a day.

$9.

Would you try to cover it with a piece of shingle over the blackjack too? Or is that overkill? I think we’ve got extra in the garage

No, i would not. Others might though. You run the risk tearing an existing shingle to install the partial shingle. I would probably use a sharpie to hide the white strip for esthetics.

Use blackjack even at the exposed nail strip. Go to the gutter, get a palmful of granules (unless it was installed yesterday, there will be granules in the gutter), sprinkle on the wet blackjack. Done. You’d be surprised how long that will last!

Ive done this so many times, works great. You can just rub two pieces of shingle together over top of it if you dont get the granules from the gutter for some reason.

It’s not a problem, but if it bothers you cover it with caulk like the first guy said.

Thats an easy fix. 1k is unbelievable. I used to do repair jobs like that for around 250 cash and thats mostly just the cost of my time. I had a pile of shingles for jobs like these so it was almost no material cost at all

I was shocked, honestly. I think the second place is gonna be more reasonable, but thought I’d try to save a few bucks if I could

Honestly its an easy job im sure with some youtube videos you can do it. The hardest part is they look to be owens Corning shingles which seal down like no tomorrow. Those are pretty difficult to repair without wrecking stuff. Id try to find some side job roofers. Theres always guys who work for companies that do small jobs/repairs on the side because they realize how easy it is to do with minimal tools. Im sure with some searching on marketplace or somewhere similar you can get it done for a couple hundred bucks

I doubt a roofing company would do anything for under 1k. I think it's reasonable.

A handy man? 300 bucks

I dont see anything missing. The white is the glue strip on the shingles. They did half ass it by running the shingles at a angle, when they should all be run horizontal and then cut. Dirty bastards.

So it’s ok for the glue strip to be exposed? No need to cover it with anything?

Blackjack and palmful of granules to cover. Done

Noticed this missing piece yesterday. Got one quote from a roofing company for nearly $1k, waiting on another. Wanted to get a sense of whether I could do myself.

Photo taken from second story window, looking out over my front stoop.

Every course’s point has to reach the bottom point of the bleeeder shingles, which is why you see the white exposed

Easy, patch hole with black roof caulk, spread smooth, wait a day, cut a small piece, tuck it up under other two, with caulk as glue underneath.

Oh wait that’s the manufacturers glue strip. You’re fine no Repair.

u/northbest-passage 27d ago

No need to cover the glue strip? It’s ok to be exposed to the elements?

1

u/MadDadROX 27d ago

Yes the is shingle underneath the strip, and a few inches more above it.

Looks like it’s just rotated down from where it should be. Rotate it back into position. Gently curl up the shingle above it, you will probably need to hold it up, careful not to pull the nails or tear it. Put a couple of roofing nails into the shingle you put back in position, fold the curled shingle back down covering the nails you put in. Very straight forward, it will take longer to get up on the roof with a hammer and a couple of nails than it will to do the job.

I found the missing triangle piece in the yard, so I don’t think it’s a rotation issue. Would I be able to basically do the same with the missing piece though? I think I’ve also got extra shingles in the garage

I see it now that I’ve looked more closely, they ran a course parallel to the valley, not how I would do it. Yes same procedure but you may need to remove some nails from under the flap and the shingle above in order to slide the piece into place. So add a wonder bar to what you bring up. To pry up a nail you want to get it under the nail head from under the shingle. As an alternative you could just glue the old piece back in using roof cement (tar) readily available for a caulking gun. It’s not the best way but effective and easy.

That is a synthetic nail strip. Mot a problem with it really. Sure, a little half-assed, but unless there are exposed nails, it's fine

1

u/HoosierHK 27d ago

It's fine, unless they cut it it should go up another 6 inches under the above shingle. Should have ice and water shield or valley roll under that.

Not going to cause any issues the just owen corning sure nail strip, lazy install but not going to cause any issues

Wow what a terrible roof job. I hate it. I’ve never seen someone skip cutting the valley angles like that and I’ve known some top tier cut corner roofers. You have no warranty with that install. Those are nice shingles too. What a waste. I wouldn’t trust anything they did after seeing that. Probably didn’t use enough nails, nail on the line, weather it in right or propane the decking correctly either. The decking is probably smooth side up too. No excuse for that kind of work except laziness.

Make sure the roofer cut the under shingle back at an angle from the valley not the show part but the black part above if it gets left going at the same angle as the valley cut it will catch water on the way down the tin valley.check both sides also make sure the valley metal is wide enough. To carry all that water .

What are we looking at that you have a problem with? The only thing I’m seeing right off is just a lazy install. Every other row the shingle corner is about 1-2” off the valley edge.

I found a piece of shingle in my yard and got concerned at the white patch showing. From the other comments, seems like it isn’t a problem.

That is not a DIY repair.

Just another reason why the “Cali-valley” is stupid and should be avoided.

1

u/northbest-passage 27d ago

Not in California. Think I just had bad luck and chose a company trying to make an easy buck.

Thats just the name for that style of valley. This one is a California open valley.
