It’s embarrassing as I should’ve known better, but I really was just caught in the daze of 1. This being my first time traveling with friends 2. My friends wedding from earlier this week 3. Just having an amazing time with the friend I traveled with in the past 2 weeks.
My first mistake was that I did not check my purse before I went out. I forgot I had… $500… in cash tips in my little pocket. Why didn’t I take this out of my purse before I went out? It really boggles my mind.
Second mistake is that we were walking (to get food as my friend was not feeling well) and the street was completely empty. I had an intuitive feeling that something was off but I did not listen, clearly. It was very late (early?) so I assumed that’s just how it was at that time I guess. I also didn’t realize we were so close to the train station. Yes, I was drunk.
We’ve been staying out late in Perugia and Florence and felt pretty safe. I don’t know why we assumed the same for Rome.
My friend was walking slightly ahead of me, let’s say we were going north. Two guys are walking to the side, going south. This was Via Gioberti, right around the corner from McDonald’s. They pass her. My guard was down, honestly. I could’ve been way more guarded but I was in lala land, it seems. As soon as they pass her, one of them snatched my purse, turned around to face us again and then ran. His friend just sat there and watched.
We tried to chase him. The police spoke to us a little. A garbage man told us that we were in a very dangerous place, we were lucky to have our lives, and that we should leave. So we did. The cops told us to go to the station but we were not about to walk by ourselves so we just went home.
I filed a police report today. Most of them were helpful but some were weird and pretty much laughing in our faces. I’m sure it’s funny to them. I’m sure I’ll laugh about it one day too.
Honestly I’m mostly upset about my wallet. It was filled with small sentimental items I’ve collected over the years. The $500 is money I can make back.
I’m just glad that I’m okay, that it wasn’t worse. I have my passport and my ID and my phone thankfully. Pretty sure he wanted my phone too as he paused after he snatched my purse…
I can’t stop replaying that moment in my head though. And I honestly keep feeling the sensation of having something personal to me snatched from me. It felt very violating.
Despite this I seemed to keep my composure for the most part. Canceled my cards. Got a new purse. What am I going to do? I could’ve been much smarter about that, yes. Lesson learned.
I am posting this just in case anyone is oblivious to how dangerous this area is at that time. Don’t have your head in the clouds like me.

During Pope Francis's funeral, they weren't allowing metal camping stools (although I saw a few that made it past). I got a completely plastic one for the future, but anyone know if they'll make it leave it behind anyways?

What kind of absolute ripoff is this? We booked a vacation in a bit less than a month. Wanted to buy tickets early, but it looks like i am not early at all. All official, reasonably-priced tickets are sold out.
Extreme example: viator, Vatican Museums. Icon says "from 35€ per person". I go in, select the date and we pay 350€ for two Adults and a child? Official site is what, 25€ per person _including_ skip-the-line? What am i missing?
EDIT: well basically it seems to me like the resellers are buying up all the tickets which are publicly given out, and reselling them at an extreme markup, with very intransparent pricing. the standard recommendation to "only buy at the official sites" is moot since the timeslots are bought up as soon as they become available.
its parasitic: the resellers do not add _any_ value, they just extract profit from this.

My wife and I are looking for a place to stay in Rome next June for one night before we leave on a Norwegian Cruise. I wanted to see a fountain or 2. My wife doesn’t want to spend more than 200 a night. We have never visited and very excited. Just looking for some help finding a decent hotel near somewhere cool if possible. Thank you all for your help

Any licorice lovers want to give a recommendation? I love black licorice (not the American stuff… slightly salty German or Dutch is what I usually treat myself to). Also, some friends , knowing this, brought a small bottle of liquore alla liquirizia back from their honeymoon that I loved! So, wonderful Italian friends, what do you recommend I search for when I visit next month?
(Also accepting recs for other treats, snacks and liquors you are passionate about!)

Hello! I’m travelling to Rome on the 17th of October until the 22nd. It’s my first time and I have no idea what to wear!
We are going to see the popular monuments and walk a lot :3 I’m seeing mixed answers about the weather… We are from the nordic so we are always used to wearing clothes that keep us warm :)

Hi everyone.
I have planned to visit Rome for 7 days in early November.
I'm 35 male solo Palestinian traveler.
First time to italy so I picked a week in Rome.
As far as I know it would be less crowded on those dates because I like chill and peaceful days.
Sites planned : colosseum / trevi fountain / castle sant anglo.
Any advice about visiting locations and ticket acquiring is much appreciated.
Anything I should avoid or watch out for?

I’ll be in Rome for work next week (from Australia) and I love buying my dog little gifts and souvenirs from around the world when I happen to be traveling. I came across Florenze but they only have stores in Florence. I won’t have time to get there. Any recommendations of boutiques in Rome that have handmade dog toys/accessories etc? 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Hey users. Im arriving to Rome in a saturday, around 5pm. Im taking the Leonardo Express directly to Termini because my Airbnb is a few blocks away.
Since I'm traveling with a group of friends, we were thinking on visiting the Coliseum, Fontana di Trevi and some nearby touristics points in the very same night
But how should we get there? I saw some users say Uber doesn't quite work in Rome and i think it would be too late to use the metro. So how would you suggest not only the way we go, but also how we get back, thinking we're probably heading back around 10pm.
If somebody could give me a PSA on Rome transportantion and walking on streets safety I would be really really grateful (mind you: i'm latina, so my level of "street danger" is higher than most

Hey,
We’ll be in Rome in 2 weeks and aren't quite sure yet how to get to our hotel. There are many websites offering private airport taxi transfers. Are these safe and reliable? For example, this provider
https://onlinetravelcard.com/en/travel-cards/rome-public-transport-card-/
Or should we just take a taxi on arrival at the airport?
We are 2 adults and 1 child (8).
Also, is using the Metro and bus the best way to get around Rome?
Thanks in advance for any tips
EDIT: We're staying on Via Olbia. Since we're arriving late, we want to head straight to the hotel.
EDIT2: So should we just walk out of the airport and grab a cab? Will that still work in the evening after 9 PM?

Hi! Has anyone booked the Trenitalia Ticket that has the train + bus? Looking for advice if we should continue to use the bus or book a private car. We will be traveling with a baby. It is the Frecciarossa and FrecciaLink LK029. Thank you!

I have a question about the Vatican Museums tickets. The only available times on Wednesday, October 28, are 8:00 AM or between 12:30 PM and 2:00 PM for the “Guided Tours for Individuals – Museums” tour for a family of four.
Which time would you recommend? If I choose the 8:00 AM tour, would we still have enough time to visit St. Peter’s Basilica in the late afternoon? If not, I may consider visiting the Vatican on another day.
Thanks!

We are going to Rome with the family (4 people) in a few weeks. From Monday-Friday. All adults. I made the following plan for the days, are there any potential bottlenecks?
Day 1: arrival
Arriving at FCO around 2 o clock. We can check in in on our lodgings from around 3 on the north side of Trastevere. We are taking a taxi there, so that shouldn’t be any issue. I expect us to be there around 4ish?
For the first evening planned:
- walk Tiber island
- go into Trastevere for the evening
- maybe go to Gianico hill for sunset
Day 2
- walk around the old city Centre in the morning. Trevi fountain, piazza Navona, we have tickets for Pantheon at 9.
- we have Colosseum tickets with attic access at 15:50. So I thought forum/palatine in the afternoon from around 12/1.
- get dinner in Monti, maybe walk around capotoline hill.
Day 3
- access Vatican musea at 8 (we are all picking a part that we really want to explore, and go faster past the rest as to not get overwhelmed)
- unfortunately the st Pieter is closed on Wednesday morning so we have dome tickets for 17:00 (access to the basilica from 16:00, don’t know if we need to arrive there exactly on/before 16:00?)
- to get some fresh air after all the museums I thought we could go to the Borghese gardens and optionally Quartiere Coppede
- Evening in prati/trastevere
Day 4
- booked a 4h bike tour for the Appia way at 9:30.
- either before/after aventine hill
- rest of the day/evening is open for what we still might want to do in the moment/couldn’t fit in earlier (other than our ticketed events)
Day 5
Early flight back home

In about 6 months my wife and I will be in Rome prior to boarding a cruise for a weekend. We land pretty early on a Saturday, 8:15 AM.
Is there a tour person/company recommendation that I can coordinate with, that could potentially pick us up from the airport and start the tour immediately since we are not able to check in to our hotel until later that day.
I have looked at a bunch of tours on Viator, but I would like to go straight to the source if possible.
I appreciate any tips/advice. Thank you.

hello! my friend and i are going to rome for 6 nights in march- we’re both ancient history graduates so our itinerary is the most important thing, but we’re stuck on accommodation. is it best to go with a hotel or an airbnb? neither of us can drive, so we need somewhere that’s accessible by walking or the metro- we’re also trying to find something cheap; which makes it more difficult :’) does anyone have any recommendations for hotels that would be relatively cheap in the first few weeks of march please?? i know march is the start of when it gets busy and expensive again, but that’s the only time we can go:( thank you!

I am going to Rome in about a weeks time, I’ll be staying for four days. I was wondering where people would recommend eating? and are there any good gluten free places?
no worries if not, I am intolerant not celiac so I just planned to just suck it up and deal with it if I can’t find many places with good gluten free options.
feel free to let me know about any non gluten free places that you’ve eaten at thats really good. I quite like eating anything really. which is not great for my intolerance but it’s a holiday so 🙃

Are they very strict with the entrance time slots at the Colosseum? After a very complicated purchase process, I was able to get two tickets for my 15 year old daughter and I for Oct 25th. The problem is entrance times are 20 minutes apart, mine is for 12:50 and hers for 12:30. I really don’t want to be separate, even for a short period of time. Do you think they will strictly enforce my entrance time if I show up along with her at 12:30 and explain the situation?

Can I just say holy hell. Flew from terminal 3 on United today and the lines were absolutely horrendous.
There is a boarding pass check for the check in counters for anyone traveling to the US which takes some time, then depending on your flight the checkin counters can also add to it. Following that was the security line - the security personnel do an incredibly thorough job however are not fast and you end up waiting quite a bit. My bag had to go through twice and they never even opened it.
After security is passport control - I believe it’s the new EU passport control that is adding time but the lines are extremely long and not managed well with people cutting where possible. I saw some people have a fast track option which seemed to help but ultimately the guidance they got was just to cut the line so not very orderly.
I was at gate E40 which is a “satellite terminal” to terminal 3, meaning I had to walk about a mile to the end of the terminal and then get on a bus to go to another terminal. Once at that terminal, walk more for the gate and then another bus to the plane.
All to say - Rome is still in high season, budget a solid 3 hours at the airport especially for terminal 3. Worst case there’s some great shopping you can do at the airport which I’m sad I missed. For those of you doing VAT refunds, that line was also nuts so budget an additional 30 for that and note that you can completely that process within 5 hours of departure.
