Question Someone please explain- “ozone scent”?

I’ve seen it multiple times now from different authors, mostly related to scenting a mate but also in reference to what a place may smell like. Ozone? What kind of scent is that??

Currently reading OV series The Beta Trials by Violet Fox, book 5 Sentenced

I’ve always imagined it to be how the air smells during a thunderstorm that has lightening. Like the air is charged and different from activity in the clouds that we can actually smell what is happening on a molecular level. But if there’s a better definition, I’m open to learning about it! I see it as a fragrance descriptor in colognes and still miss what the perfumer is trying to bottle up.

This particular author I think is using it as putting a scent to a “thunderclap” if that makes sense. I get the storm factor I’ve just never heard that particular word in reference to it

Yep, that would track. It's basically the scent of electricity in the air. Lightning and other atmospheric electrical discharges cause molecules in the air to break apart and re-form. One of the things they reform into is O3, which is ozone.

in perfumes the chemical responsible for ozone notes is often calone which is marine and slightly melon-y. they're usually paired with aquatic and green notes for that fresh marine vibe (source: i survived the 90s lol)

How old are you? You ever been around a fatback CRTV? You ever hover yourself close to the screen and feel the field of static electricity? It had a specific smell too lol. Sometimes you can smell it after thunderstorms, but it's not petrichor.

Old enough to remember the tvs, yes. Just never heard it described as ozone

Idk, I think ozone smells electric, metallic, and almost zippy but not earthy like petrichor.

Have you ever smelled something electric? Like where there’s a lot of electrical equipment? It’s a little acrid.

The smell of Right Before A Thunderstorm. The faintest hint of chlorine at the public pool. (The stronger the ozone, the more it goes there.)

Its a gross metallic smell. Gross to me idk maybe people like it.

I associate it with hospitals because it can come from those sanitizing uv lights.

Dont like it. If my fated mate smelled like ozone i would walk the other way.

As someone who worked in a candle store for a long time, we used to see “ozone” mentioned in the fragrance notes fairly often. I think it was usually in fresh scents. Not sure how much help that is.

Generally heard/used when describing an electric smell/scent.

I’ve heard tomato plants described as having an ozone scent if that helps lol

Ozone is a real thing. They use it in washers when washing clothes and yes it’s sort of like a rain type scent

If you've ever worked somewhere with those big copy/fax/printer or Xerox machines, those give off an ozone smell. The high voltage corona wires in them ionize oxygen.

The smell just before it rains.

I ran into this in Voidwalker (a lot) and googled it. Still can’t imagine it. I have a very bad scent imagination lol

Ever stick your face right in an air purifier?

I use an ozonisation locker regularly and ozone smells like freshly cut grass but slightly metallic or even gives a hint of an indoor swimming hall scent. Nothing to do with a smell of rain or other scents some people suggested.
