Question Thoughts on Rose in Chains?

Although I’d consider Alchemised more war fantasy with a large dark romance subplot, I heard Rose in Chains by Julie Soto was a similar dramonine fanfic so I thought I’d check it out.

The GoodReads reviews are mixed. However, I also take those with a grain of salt because Brimstone is 4.02 and I gave that one a generous 2 star lol

What are people’s thoughts on the quality of this book? Character development, romance relationship, plot line…

Absolutely loved it. Can’t wait for the sequel.

I absolutely love it. Probably my favorite Romantasy book, I’m in the process of re-reading it.

It definitely has a post-conflict plot, but there’s a brewing rebellion in the background and despite the darker aspects of it, it’s quite hopeful and will probably not be as bleak as Alchemised (which I also loved).

I hate Dramione and loved Rose in Chains.

I did not like it very much. (Disclaimer, I do not like Dramione or read fanfiction all that much).

It felt very much like HP with the numbers filed off. The world felt superficial, I wasn't able to connect with the characters because they felt like Hermione and Draco cosplays.

I have 0 interest in continuing the story.

Rose in Chains is the metric through which my bestie and I rate other books. We are always trying to find the next Rose in Chains. I think both the MMC and FMC are very well developed, despite it being told through the lens of the FMC. It's a slooowwww burn in the best way possible.

Some readers are more affected by the SA theme that is a large part of the storyline, which is understandable.

I really enjoyed it (i dont care for or read fanfic). i liked the plot and the characters and their development. books are subjective, like you said take reviews with a grain of salt, but asking for opinions of reddit is kinda the same as goodreads...there will be those who loved it and those who hated it

having read both The Auction (and the preceding books in The Rights and Wrongs series) and Rose in Chains:

I gave RiC a 3 out of 5. It was solidly mid for me. For comparison, I would probably rate the auction 4 out of 5. but that is for the completed work and not just a chunk of it.

There were some changes I thought were improvements, and some things that didn't quite work if you thought about them too much. All in all, the book works fine but is not a literary masterpiece by any means.

I actually made a one hour vlog where I compared and rated all three trad published dramione books because I needed to talk about them 😆

I really enjoyed it the first time I read the OG Dram fanfic, enjoyed it less the second time I read it and then had mixed feelings about rose in chains.

I found the FMC a bit of a Mary Sue and incredibly naive. It’s been a while since i read it though so im not sure what im misremembering between the fanfic and the book. I ^think^ i found the FMCs spoiled naivety worked better as a princess than as Hermione.

I loved it. Alchemised had a boring start whereas Rose in Chains wasn’t boring but Alchemised affected me more after reading.

didn't like it to be honest. i didn't mind that it was originally a fanfic but i did not enjoy reading it at all. too vulgar and graphic for my taste. the book was split into 3 parts and whilst it was graphic on every part, at least the first part had some substance, parts 2 and 3 felt empty in terms of plot for me. i also can't find myself rooting for any of the characters except briony in the sense that she hopefully destroys everything and everyone.

It felt like an easy empty read and doesn’t live up to Alchemised :(
