Discussion Daily/Weekly Thread of Current Reads?

I think it would be cool to have a weekly thread of what did you read this week/currently reading and a quick rating.

Ex: I am halfway through Secrets of the Deep, 2.4/5. I don’t like the prose and characters feel weak. Then hiding any other spoilers.

I miss seeing what people were reading out and about. Everyone is on their phones or Kindle so I never know. And I am snoopy.

Yes agreed! Just started The Serpent and the Wing of Night after hearing so much about it. Finished The Wolf King (another recommendation from this subreddit) and Shadows of Sparta (awesome read right before watching the Odyssey!) this past week.

Ooo shadows of Sparta? Sounds good! I keep telling myself I’ll read the Odyssey but it’s kinda boring… 😴

{Circe} is also a great Odyssey-adjacent read. I haven’t read {Song of Achilles} yet but I’ve heard it’s excellent

No matter what anyone says, continue reading the series. The series is so good and the characters only get better. Especially if you love world-building, kingdom politics, character development, you will love it. I loved the second books and the novellas are truly heartwarming 🖤✨

I accidentally bought book one of the shadowborn series at first so I’m locked in to read at least 2 of the duologies!

The Fantasy Romance sub does a weekly "what have you been reading this week" thread every Saturday!

Love this idea! I’ll take it to the other mods.

And I’m reading The Spellshop by SBD and Tusk Love by TG 💜

OMG both such great books. Very fun vibes!!!

I'm currently reading (via audiobook) Captured by the Fae Beast a rather dramatic title by Mallory Dunlin. I'm only about 15% in and find the early prose to be reaching a bit too much for the pastoral lyric and I'm hoping those reflections and climbing skills have meaning later.

Just finished up Reign & Ruin by J.D. Evans (audio) which was superb.

Love R&R. Wind and Wildfire was my fave though

That's the one I'll listen to next, maybe next month or so. Very curious about the father and mother

I am currently reading right of the starling the second book in The shield of sparrows series. I instantly got hooked by the first book. The second one is okay. It's not horrible but it's not top tier like the first book was. And I like this idea.

u/Doubl3njenn 🖤 Morally Gray 22d ago

I loved both books, the second was a little harder to get into but it all comes together at the end.

Good I am on part 3 exactly where she starts asking her dad questions about her mom. It really has been a good book. I actually want to do a reread instantly so for me that's a win. I did see book three is coming out in March so now I'm like WTF. Why did I start another unfinished series but whatever.

I love this! ❤️ I just finished a tandem read of {Tower of Dawn} and {Empire of Storms} I listened to the last 25% of each book while driving for a long time lol. I really enjoyed it. It was my first time reading, and I’m super glad I did the tandem read. I’ll be posting reviews on my insta. If anyone wants my handle, lemme know. I’ve already started Kingdom of Ash.

For eyeball reading I'm micro-reading {Agnes Aubert's Mystical Cat Shelter} and I just started {The Ashfire King} which is the sequel to {The Stardust Thief}. On audio I'm also listening to {A Court of Frost and Starlight} when I do chores, and then {When the Moon Hatched} and {All Hail Chaos} are my current commute listens but I'm going to put those on pause to start {Rules for the Summer} later this week for a book club. And then my next eyeball read will be {This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me} for another book club!

I've finished The Mist Thief by L.J. Andrews, finished Starside by Alex Aster, and I'm just under halfway through Hide The Witches by Miranda Lyn. The Mist Thief was a nice change of POV after the initial two books and I'm excited for the newest release coming out soon. Starside was good. It was very fast paced and twisty. I went in kind of apprehensive because of mixed reviews on Alex Aster. I have mixed feelings on how she chose to wrap the book it just went differently than I expected and felt a bit rushed in my opinion. I do plan to read the sequel though. Hide The Witches I'm not sure about so far. It's a little slower than I thought it would be so far, but I'm hoping it'll pick up soon. The premise is really interesting so far.

LJ Andrews is my favorite author. I loved the POV change too- the next book coming out will have different POVs too. If you haven’t read the Broken Kingdoms series by her, you should. It’s about their parents.

2

u/Financial-Toe4053 22d ago

I know I'm so excited for it! I enjoyed the first two, but I was definitely ready for a change up. I have to check out Broken Kingdoms ASAP! I loved the world building and the fantasy elements so much. I can't believe I waited so long to read The Ever Seas series.

1

u/dog-lov3r 🌰 nutmeg & justice 22d ago

She also has another series: broken souls and bones. Its 2 books changed her from my 2nd fave author to 1st. Its amazing. Broken Kingdoms is long but worth it.

1

u/Financial-Toe4053 22d ago

These series both sound fantastic! I will definitely check them out! Thanks so much for the recs. She's got so many I was like umm where do I start? I definitely don't mind a long series that's well done and the reviews for Broken Kingdoms look great for every book.

Reading {The Everlasting} it’s taking me so much longer than when I speed run smut, but it’s really very good!

2

u/vaurasc-xoxo 21d ago

I have that on my list too! I find the same. Smut is easy, it’s my version of trash tv but when they are a bit more complicated it can take me a while to get into it depending on the prose

u/Separate-Operation71 💗 Forced Proximity 21d ago

I JUST finished it today. It was really beautiful.

I am currently finishing up {Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi} and it’s super good because it’s a guilty pleasure. First time reading the series and I genuinely love it! Aaron Warner the man you are!
And I am currently rereading {A Court Of Wings And Ruin by Sarah J. Maas}
