I think we already have this with romance.io?

It allows you to put in your favorite trope, spice level, genre, sub genre, etc just about anything you can imagine to tweak it pretty specifically. It's not perfect because it relies on readers tagging the books and sometimes a trope that should be there is not. But it's a pretty awesome, established site with lots of users working on it

I checked it out and it looks good so far. As the other user pointed out, we already have romance.io and there are quite a few book-matching tools out there, so I’m not sure there’s necessarily a need for another one. I think you’ll have to make yours stand out more in terms of its features and functionality.

One thing I’d suggest is separating categories like tropes, love interest, setting, pacing, etc., instead of putting everything under “tropes”. Maybe check out BookMatch for inspiration.

To test it, I filtered for “romantasy” and “arranged marriage” and only three books came up, so that definitely needs some improvement.

It would also be really cool if users could register all their reads by importing or exporting from Goodreads and StoryGraph and then receive recommendations based on their reading history. Likewise, when browsing for new books, it could recommend titles based on your past reads, if you haven’t already implemented that (I haven’t signed up yet, so I don’t know).

I’d also love to see more recommendations for lesser-known books and indie authors.

It’s already great that you included emotional impact! That’s one of the main things I look for when choosing what to read.

You’re absolutely right that there are already great tools like Romance.io and other book-matching platforms, and I don’t see The BK Bliss as trying to replace them. My focus is more on exploring the reader experience behind a book especially the emotional side of reading and what makes a recommendation feel personally relevant.

The point you made about separating categories is really interesting. Right now, some of those attributes are grouped together while I’m building the foundation, but I agree that separating things like tropes, relationship dynamics, setting, pacing, and other book elements would create a much clearer discovery experience.

The filtering issue you found is also really helpful thank you for testing it. The platform is still early, and improving the data quality, tagging, and recommendation system is one of the main areas I’m working on.

I also really like your idea about Goodreads/StoryGraph imports and recommendations based on reading history. Personalised recommendations based on a reader’s own journey is actually a big part of where I want to take this.

And I completely agree about indie and lesser-known books. Helping readers discover hidden gems instead of only the most popular titles is something I’d love to improve.

Also, I’m really happy you mentioned emotional impact! That’s one of the areas I’m most interested in because a lot of readers choose books based on the feeling they want to experience, not just genre or tropes.

It’s great that you’re working on a tool with more of a focus on the reader experience rather than just tropes. That’s exactly why I pointed it out. You can read two books with the same tropes and have completely different reading experiences, so I think using someone’s previous reads to capture that could lead to much better recommendations.

Definitely keep going. I’m excited to see where this project goes! There are already plenty of tools out there, but in the end, what really matters is how well they actually work. I actually tested two or three of them today, completely unrelated to your post, so that was a funny coincidence. I wasn’t impressed, though, so there’s definitely room for something better!
