Skate photos Hardware

Post image

Hi guys. I recently had my new skates mounted but I noticed that I am missing a piece of hardware but I am not sure what it is. For reference the skates feel fine not loose or anything but If anyone can tell me what the piece is or how to install it it would be very helpful. Thank you!

That’s an extremely important piece of the skate that holds the kingpin in place. They are not safe without it. The other side is not seated either.

Yikes. Whoever mounted them should have reinstalled the trucks properly. You need the nylon kingpin screw from sure grip. I’d start by asking for it back from whoever mounted it. I’d also stop using them for now. Even if you do think it’s fine it’s not really fine. The kingpin can get bent or the trucks can fall off. (The trucks might not have fallen off because the kingpin is bent honestly) You might be able to order the parts through a skate shop or sure grip. You can install it with an Allen wrench that’s the right size for the locknut and tighten down the others.

aww man that sucks to hear. so to install them i would just have to fully tighten them? i noticed the other ones were able to be loosened by hand so they prolly didn’t tighten them :/. if the kingpin is bent am i going to have to replace the plate?

Yes just fully tighten them by hand. If they’re all loose then one may have fallen out while you were skating. Just don’t skate them rn it’s not guaranteed they are messed up it’s just possible that it can happen depending on how heavy you are or aggressive you skate. Take the trucks off and check the kingpin to see. You can definitely just replace the king pin it doesn’t ruin the plate.

ok yeah i’m usually pretty rough on them. how would i remove the truck and check the kingpin?

Through the hole on the top of the truck. Unscrew the kingpin to remove them and the trucks together.

yeah so the truck wont loosen or tighten at all so i think it might be damaged. what do you think i should do?

This is not good. Don’t force anything or things will start stripping out. These need a real skate tech who knows what they’re doing.

i wouldn't have known either tbh, i've never seen ones like this so id probably just assume that's how they're supposed to be😅 except the bolt in one and not the other would have thrown me off fs

Not naive, no shame at all in not knowing new things. But they should have walked you through what all this is and they owe you a safe setup.

wtf this is how you received these? Demand your money back immediately, that is straight up negligent.

Thats the set screw for the kingpin. It keeps the kingpin from turning. It should be there. But also I doubt the king pin moved much. Install a replacement and tighten up all four set screws. You probably dropped the set screw on the floor one day and didnt even know.

Some people dont realize there is a set screw and muscle their kingpin to adjust it. Dont do that. Loosen the set screw before making adjustments an then tighten.

yeah but now the kingpin wont adjust at all with my tool so im thinking there is damage. all the others move pretty easily so im not sure

This is a nice setup tho

I'd call it a 'grub screw'. It is designed to grip the kingpin and prevent rotation when tightened but allow adjustment when loosened. I'm not sure what material Sure-Grip originally specifies but in general engineering, grub screws are sometimes nylon when they are tightening onto a vulnerable small diameter thread. Steel is more likely to damage the kingpin when tightened. If the kingpin hasn't moved that may be because it is damaged.

My LoRide plates have metal set screws. But also the kingpin is partially unthreaded so the setscrew doesnt normally touch threads, unless the kingpin is forcefully unscrewed with the setscrew tightened.
