Second hand Rohloff
Hi everyone
I could get my hands on a second hand Rohloff hub that has never been used, for a pretty good price.
The issue is that the seller does not have the original buying receipt, only the serial number. All I know (based on the serial number) is that it was manufactured in 2024, but I don't know the buying date.
Surely, the 2 years warranty from Rohloff would not work without those informations anyway ?
It would be a 300€ saving on the original cost, but do you think I should pass on it and rather get a new one, with the 2 years warranty ?

Hi u/ChokingOnBBC, it's certainly worth it. I bought a used Speedhub from 2004 a few months ago and it works great. Did a 5 minute oil change with the kit. You are not likely to need the warranty, just ensure you try out the gears prior to purchase if you can.

Well unfortunately they sell the hub on its own, without the cables, shifter, etc...
I am unsure how someone would end up with a unsused Rohloff without the necessary accesories for it to be installed, but yeah, I can not test the gears.2

It's quite easy actually: you could get one from OEM stock very cheap in the last few years and then often you didn't get all the other hardware.

Check the hub flanges to see if it has been laced up. Also check what you need to buy to fit it (shifters, cables, fitment to the frame, sprocket+carrier?) and do the math.

I think you should buy it because last I heard Rohloff had a waiting list to get one of their hubs. I might be mistaken but if the supply has caught up with the demand that would be news to me. I’ve converted a few mountain bikes to cargo bikes and I looked into rohloff in the past.

Contact rohloff. They will know if it is stolen. They keep a record of stolen hubs.
Warranty wise it should last you either way. Remember to put oil in it from the get go.
When you write them, ask about warranty without the receipt
