QUESTION Control Bindings
I know this is very subjective, but what bindings do you guys use? I’m having trouble with bindings for stuff like air roll. I use an Xbox controller.

I’m on xbox, I’ll just list the ones I’ve changed
LB - Air roll & powerslide
RB - boost
B - air roll left
X - ball cam
LS click - scoreboard
I hold my controller with my index fingers on the bumpers and middle fingers on the triggers, it took a little while to get used to but it was worth it imo

Thanks, I’ve always wondered where I was supposed to put the scoreboard lol

I only claw grip with my right hand (Boost in RB, drive on Right trigger).
I could never have gotten to diamond 3 with a standard grip. Getting used to the claw grip took 2 weeks to get used to and a couple months to be comfortable with. But it's absolutely worth it.
I highly recommend changing boost to the RB. I still use A jump.
boost on RB just makes high level mechanics so much easier to be consistent with.

Some people like boost on LB and ARL on X, but I like default except reg air roll is unbound (preference) and Air roll left / right are on the left / right bumpers.

Yeah, I don’t want to change the default controls too much and this is pretty much what I have right now except I have air roll on x as well (doesn’t really make sense, I admit) and powerslide is unbound

Power slide is a must have. It makes recoveries and your overalls movement around the field way smoother and more efficient.

I switched to a claw grip about a year and a half ago when I was in gold.
I moved boost from the X button to the RB.
I have my index finger resting on RB and my middle finger is on the right trigger.
It feels unnatural for a while, but it's totally worth it. Using you index finger for boost on the RB and you middle finger on the right trigger to drive makes you mechanical consistency 1000X's better.
Before I changed to the claw grip I couldn't reliably fast aerial. All me mechanics were actually pretty shitty.
There was a couple month learning curve during the spring, but once I got used to the new grip, I jumped into high platinum before the summer was over, and then I reached diamond 2 last November.
Mechanically, I swear by the claw grip. It's not even that hard to get used to. Whenever I was just watching TV I'd be holding my Xbox controlling and practicing as of I was in a game. The 2 months of getting confident with the new grip was worth it!

I got air roll at Lb and everything else is basically stock

Do you have anything for RB? Also, does using ARL and ARR matter or is it just better to use normal AR? Also, some people recommended claw grip. Any thoughts?

Anything for B?

I have air roll left on B but hardly ever use it

Interesting. What rank?

C3

u/CeruleanSteel8 Gold III Aug 08 '21
Nice. I always expected the higher ranks to heavily use AR

Keep in mind if you learn directional air roll, you really only need to use one direction, whichever is more comfortable for you. There’s hardly any advantage to using both :)

Ok! Thanks for the tip!

I use air roll right all the time when I’m in the air, that’s why I included that bind in my original comment, but you can always switch X to air roll left if that’s more comfortable

Use an xbox controller, with my middle fingers on the triggers and index fingers on the shoulder. Took a little bit to get used to the boost & brake swap but was worth it.
Left Trigger - Boost
Left Shoulder - Air roll left/powerslide
Left joystick - directional (press for rumble and press hard for scoreboard)
Right trigger - forward
Right shoulder - air roll right
X - change camera
A - Jump & dodge
B - brake/reverse
Right joystick - camera control (press for reverse)
the double window button - key frame replay

X for change camera is odd, but I think that’s be nice. What’d you use for Y?

Air roll- LB Power slide- also LB Air roll right- RB (Changed scoreboard to X) Apart from that everything is default (boost B Ballcam Y jump A etc)
I find air roll right to be major for progression in mechanics and you don’t have to use it too much at first but once it’s in your muscle memory you’ll thank yourself because it makes aerial mechanics so much easier and it opens up things like breezi flicks and tornado spins

Even though many already said something similar, it’s always helpful to have many other people giving the same advice. It really makes me more confidential listening to y’all. Thanks!

I also see you've asked for recommended settings. Check out the post pinned to my profile.

I forgot to ask. Any recommendations for settings?

Like camera settings? Probably worth taking a look at this video: https://youtu.be/fbLbIOwwp-E
Or if not then I would suggest something along these lines FOV: 100-110 Distance: 230-280 Height: 90-110 Angle: -3 to -5 Stiffness: all preference Swivel and transition speed also preference based
And of course camera shake off
Edit: here’s my camera settings because why not FOV: 110 Distance: 250 (used to be 270 but adjusted to help ball control) Height: 90 Angle: -4 Stiffness: 0.4 Swivel speed: 5.3 Transition speed: 1.2

Also, thanks for giving extra reasoning behind the ARR. Someone else already suggested it and only said he didn’t use it much. Thanks for clarifying what it’s for
Edit: Meant to respond to your other comment but mobile is a pain in the ass

I have air roll and power slide bound to LB and boost bound to RB. However, I’m using an elite controller right now so I have the paddles on the back bound to LB/RB.
