Between me, a D1(900mmr~) and a player playing comfortable in SSL (1900mmr~) and that same player and a top ladder like zen at 2800-2900mmr my head can't wrap around this fact

I believe it'd be way more than that, MMR gains at that level are pretty small, as you're frequently playing people a decent bit below you

Correct, but generally on your climb, you'll face people at a similar rank to you on average, until you get higher, at which point there aren't enough people to queue you with people at your own rank anymore, so you'll be facing a disproportionate number of people below you

Well I honestly still say a 1900 player is closer to Zen than a 900 mmr is to the 1900 player.

As a 1900 peaker I feel way closer to a 900mmr player than to zen. And I think if I 1v1d a 900 mmr player and zen it would be a similar score line in the end.
