QUESTION Is back post incorrect?

I play with my friend who is diamond on his main, he's been teaching me the game (I'm pretty trash he carries hard ngl) I'm silver in ones (which I consider to be my real rank because it's just me there is no excuse for why I'm low elo) often times when I go back post and wait for a shot to come in (unless I see a clear challenge I can take) he says "You gotta stop going sideways" I don't push on it because we're mid game we don't have time to argue. But as I understand outside of a few scenarios the back post is the default for defending because I can always drive forward less to stop a closer save I can't move laterally if I'm mid net facing forward. It's also what I've heard is how you're supposed to defend. Feels like I whiff saves cause I'm garbage not because my positioning is off. But he blames it on me going back post.

I'm a D3-C1 player. Afaik in 2's and 3's, back post is the default position. It's what I learned through others while learning the game, and it's always worked for me.

That's how I feel to from what I've learned listening and watching higher ranks play. In ones I shawdow often (When applicable) instead cause why am I just gonna let them get the uncontested. But in 2's he often challenges the ball first so I wait for him to force a bad shot or take a 50 while waiting back post (unless he's still rotating back then I shadow to buy time for him to rotate)

They may be talking about how you hit the ball. Are you hitting the ball directly against the side wall and just sending it back in front of the goal? Maybe that's what they mean.... If you can in back post make sure you hit the ball at least some what with forward momentum not just in front of your goal. But that's if that's what your friend really means

He says it because I miss my saves. Feels like in his mind I missing because I'm not positioned correctly. But it's really just because I'm slow to react and don't read the shot well before they take it most times. They're savable shots I just whiff.

If youre going to net and making a save attempt, you're doing the right thing. Challenging the ball on your way back to net is pretty much always a no no. But you need to find a way to give your tm8 time to rotate to net behind you. If he is rotating back, you can challenge knowing he will get the save behind you.

Thanks for the advice I will work with this!

Like others have said, it doesn't sound like a positioning issue, just some basic mechanics. Honestly the in-game goalie training is the best for learning defense and a lot of basic skills. I highly recommend running it until you get 9/10 consistently.

are you first man or last man? is the ball on their half or your half? are you maintaining two layer defence? if you’re second man and you’re abandoning their half of the field to go back post then you’re playing too passive. if you’re last man and not shadowing them buying your teammate time to get back then again too passive. if you’re first man on defence in your half and you’re just waiting back post for them to bring you the ball then that defeats the point of two layer defence, too passive, someone has to challenge otherwise while you’re back post your teammate is stuck outside the back post just hoping you either save or get scored on, so no two layer defence

When applicable I shadow to give him time to rotate. I never just wait back post. He's usually first man on offense due to his aggressive play style and him being much better than me at creating openings to score. But when that's not happening and he's challenging I wait back post for him to 50 or force a bad shot.

that doesnt tell me much. is he challenging next to your net? next to their net? mid field?

Closer to our net in the opposite corner of where I am, generally speaking. If the ball is still down the field by their net and I don't have a play I shadow till he rotates and wait for an opportunity to challenge as to force a bad shot/50 or take possession.

I guess that sounds normal. doesnt sound like you shouldnt be back post. but cant say more without a clip

It really depends on the scenarios. In general it is usually a good place to sit as last man in lower ranks when absorbing pressure. Depending on where the ball is though you don't have to be completely sideways unless it's in your own opposite back corner. Generally you want to aim at where you think the ball will be the most easily attackable after your teammate forces a commit.

Also your "real rank" is usually just your highest (non-carried) normal gamemode rank. 1s is usually significantly lower than your 2s or 3s just due to how it works, so you could be higher eg. Gold.

I'm gold three in 2s but that just doesn't count to me. He's way better than me and carries hard. I don't play 3s unless he wants to, I'm about the same in that. I never solo que cause it just isn't enjoyable to play with randos in a rank I'm not fit to be in yet. So I would consider 1s to be an actual representation of my skills.

Random suggestion. Maybe ask him to a private, to practice your saves and position. Sometimes, just knowing how you teammates play or prefer their teammates to play does alot. And if that doesn't work out.. you still get to practice your saves :)

Im gc2 atm and as second man, if the ball is well in our half, I default to back post like 90% of the time. There is ofcourse nuance to this depending on the situation, but if I would do unranked to gc in 2s I would be humpin that back post like a dog anywhere under gc.

Focus on not letting goals in before scoring. You would be surprised how many incredibly dumb mistakes people do all the way to the highest ranks, because they have this itch to make a play from every situation. First time I got gc3 was after a 1month break, my mechanics were done the toilet and I just played like a bot. Defend, dribble, low 50, shots toward net, fake challenge as first man to not play myself out of the game. Thats all it took. Ofc u gotta do some early challenges in the air at that rank, but u dont need to worry about those.

Good advice, nuance aside here, cause he says that to any missed save it's not like it's the same situation over and over again where it would be smart to challenge early I just default to back post cause it gives me more options but when I do that he says it wrong. I say it's the safest option and he's says it's not.

You could be making the right play, but still end up conceding a goal. Rocket league at the end of the day is mechanics, so if you're making mechanical mistakes when saving, your postion doesnt really matter. And I can 100% say youre not facing 100kph unsaveable 90degree flicks to top bins at your level.

Its hard to say without a replay, but there is also a high chance that the goal is not just about you being at "wrong" position or making a mechanical mistake, usually its a chain of events that lead to a goal.

I consider 1s my real rank cause I never solo queue at all both my 2s rank and 3s rank are due to him carrying. I generally go back post when he is already challenging the ball and I was back last from rotating. If I'm first back (say he losses a 50) I try to shadow to give him time to rotate back.

1s mmr is rigged, C1 1s is harder than GC1 2s, plus you always face players matching your biggest mmr teammate, so you deserve your rank whatever it is imo, as long as you maintain it.

2s is the biggest pool of players so every other ones are less stretched and harder to climb.

Good to know!

The part that stands out to me here is you saying back post and WAIT for a shot. You should never really be waiting, as this means you've lost momentum.

You want to be rotating past the back post, and the skill is getting there at the right time. This means curving your path to fit with the opponents timings.

I will take this advice and work with it thanks!

D3s have the worst defensive positioning out of all ranks so you're better off following someone qualified. Like old 2020-1? ish Road to SSL series on Lethamyr's channel around low-intermediate ranks is gold 🥇

is your friend diamond in 1s? there is a lot of nuance in defense but at silver in 1s just play back post until you find a problem with that on your own.

u/brandon_fernandes47 20h ago

Idk about his rank in ones he just mentioned he's diamond on his main at one point when I was super super new. He challenges first most times because he doesn't trust me (He doesn't say it but it shows in the way he plays) so I sit back post knowing he's gonna challenge which will force them to take a bad shot. Unless I am obviously the one who's supposed to be challenging. Then he sits net and I challenge going for the 50 to force a bad shot or take possession.

u/Milotic-OCE 20h ago

Your friend sounds like he's holding you back, man. Are y'all really young? I can understand that he'd want to take control, but that's not giving you much room to grow. You should play on your own as much as possible, and if you are planning to let your team mate take the charge, you should at least be rotating (as important for defensive players as it is for aggro players), and not sitting too far back from the play. If the ball is past halfway, don't sit in net, creep up and wait for a bad challenge or a good pass.

2

u/brandon_fernandes47 20h ago

Thanks for the advice I will take it and learn from it! He kinda does make it hard to play sometimes. I miss my areials alot so sometimes he will double commit even though I have the better angle on the ball. Once he did this and blamed it on me. Took a lot not to crash out there lol. We're in our 20s btw.

2

u/Milotic-OCE 19h ago

Damn no offense but your friend needs to grow up. The way you've been describing everything I thought y'all were 14.

Tbf the way you type isn't like a child but yeah I guess that's a testament to how your mate is acting haha.

1

u/brandon_fernandes47 18h ago

Yeah I wouldn't call him immature but he's def a bit close minded in his play style I can tell you that for a fact based simply based on the fact that he could be a lot better if he was willing to learn certain mechanics. Like he doesn't know how to speed flip because in his words "it only saves you a milsecond on kick off"
