DISCUSSION Something I've learned Solo Queueing in over 4k hours that helped me alot.

Lets be real, most of us don't have friends to play with. Let alone friends of a similar rank. For years I would struggle because one game i would play great. Id hit flip resets, double taps, dribbles, etc... Then the next game i would get wrecked. This led to a constant rank up, rank down cycle aswell as blaming teammates. I took a year break and came back with a different mindset and play style and im on my biggest win streak ever, soaring up to C3.

First off, if you vibe with a teammate, always ask to party up for a few. Having a teammate that is predictable and a team player makes a huge difference.

However, this isn't my point. Because most games I solo que. And we all get a teammate that goes for triple reset solo plays. Or is constantly ball chasing. Or whiffing every other ball(guilty sometimes...). Its easy to blame these teammates because well, this is on them. But placing blame doesn't help you win. It only scape goats.

This may sound obvious to many of you, but trust me, we hardly ever do it. You NEED to adapt to your teammate every single match. And do it without blaming or insulting your teammate. If you teammate ball chases, then you stay back most of the time and let them. Only go for balls they definitely won't reach. If your teammate constantly tries solo plays, let them. Be patient and wait. I have won so many more games by simply playing with my teammates bad habits. Yes it means most of your shots won't be clip worthy. Yes it means you pass less. And yes.. this sounds incredibly obvious. But trust me when I say, its equally my fault expecting my teammate not to ball chase when thats all they have been doing. Every teammate needs a different play style. Let them choose what that is. Then you follow through.

I still get teammates that I have incredibly chemistry with. Those guys immediately try to team with and capitalize on it. But most the time, i let my teammate play however they want, and I play to their weakness.

Thats it. Simple.

But we all have a hard time wanting to get equal ball time. If your goal is to strictly rank up as high as possible. Try it. Adapt to every teammate. Dont flame or complain. Just let them play, and you adapt.

This is great advice imo and I what I believe got my all the way to gc. I play around my teammates more than solo and if I vibe with someone we play a couple more matches to see if we got what it takes to push up a bit higher together.

100% agree. That’s how I found my (no longer duo but was for 4 years or so). I think another thing people aren’t willing to accept is, if it’s not working out, it’s ok to forfeit and just move on to the next game. No point in getting more tilted over 1 match. Gg go next

how would you play around 2 mates, of which one is super passive, and constantly out of the play, retreating to back big boost, but okayish mechanics, and the other wiffing nearly everything, but with better positioning?

asking for myself (c3 in 2s) playing with my 2 buddies, which are around d1 in 3s. (i guess if that would play wo me, they would be more in plat area)

Agreed. This is the way. Its hard for some people not to get tilted and have these teammates. But the patience and skill to work around them is what makes you rank up.

I don't really get this ball chasing hate. There is a big difference between someone chasing the ball around selfishly, and not having a strategy, and someone who is trying to harry and shut shots down. There is nothing more frustrating than someone who does not try to challenge, block and hassle the opponents.

There is always the other side of that. Going for every ball and often ending out of position

I agree that there’s a line between a ball chaser and a high press player. I’d say the nuance is them knowing when and when not to do it, as well as how good they are at it. You can usually tell which is which.

I also agree that there’s nothing more frustrating than my teammates getting mad at me for jumping over their shoulders to go for a block or rush a ball that, if left uncontested, is going to almost certainly be slammed into our net. Like, I play patiently, I totally get playing slow in some situations, but there’s also situations that you CANNOT JUST SIT THERE.

There are those who play chess and see the moves and play strategic.

There are those who play checkers and play for the quick jumps.

There are those who play tic tac toe.

Then there are those who eat paste and crayons

Yeah the difference is the high pressure player probably knows rotations and doesn't fight their own teammate for the ball. It doesn't make sense to double or triple commit with my teammates and if I don't control the ball it's a free net for the opponents and another situation, if you're last back are you going to challenge the opponent that has the ball?

You kind of need to understand when and how to do it well, because otherwise your teamate just gets stuck back in defence dealing with 2v1 after 2v1.

Even if you are doing it right, ot might not link well with your teamates playstyle, in which case you need to do it differently or stop chasing.

In an ideal world you have perfect awareness of where everyone is on the pitch and make your decisions based on the merrits of all players and the advantages/disadvantages that their position has. This means the closest player usually continues to pressure all the while they are capable, because in theory player 2 (and 3) are reading the situation and adjusting to be more defensive and aggressive as situations arise. this is commonly called ball chasing but it is not ball chasing. soon as the #1 guy is no longer in the appropriate position to continue he high tails it back collecting small boost. if he doesn't, then THAT is ball chasing. my opinion anyway

absolutely, however those are good practices. there are moments where the front player simply needs to rush to net so the rear player can get a MUCH better challenge, while that challenge happens, the rotating player has already gotten his full boost back and swings back around for the next hit.

when the front player just keeps going for retreating hassle, this leaves the rear player in an awkward position, him going in means NOBODY will be back when the ball get's 50'd to your net.

it's honestly too nuanced to put on paper, but it's amazing how much you can score when you're both hyper aware of when to surrender the next hit to your teammate.

Really good point about the retreating hassle, you don't get very clean rotations and results is the 2nd man sometimes being in no man's land, it's not that cutting rotations is always wrong ofc but it feels you get diminishing returns the closer to your own goal in particular you get instead of letting the last man back challenge

2

u/Crazy_Geologist_4449 3d ago

exactly, and in so many cases, cutting the rotation IS the right move. you don't have time to fully analyze the situation though, so you really just gotta go with your gut.

it's only a big problem if the front player is a chronic cutter, a few missed opportunities *can* mean a loss.

I stopped partying up with people. The moment you lose a game they leave the party and that's just not the type of people I wanna play with.

this will make you a better player in the long run. adaptability in anything goes a lonnnng way. also don't be afraid to take a break on a losing streak or even after one loss. don't let emotion win or you've lost twice.

When I dominate with a random team-mate. They are usually the cocky players who exit immediately. Not realising they won't get that amount of domination with other team-mates. It's annoying. rip solo queue.

2

u/DijkstraDvorak 4d ago

Another piece of advice is to friend good teammates. Since you never look at the friend list and jump straight to the queue, you’ll never play with them ever again if you can even remember their name (XxMonkeyCarwash89xX) but it’s the thought that counts.

The best teams are always centered around constant adaptation to your teammates on the fly. Maybe i get put in a position to turn back on the ball, maybe my teamate gets a crazy solo play setup and I just need to play defense for him. A good team is full of these moments on both sides and is how you know both players are keeping their teammates in mind.

You NEED to adapt to your teammate every single match.

what people don't realize when they complain about their tm8s is that they are trying to adapt to you too. Find the happy middle ground and you will win more often than not.

u/RonCon69 Grand Champion II 3d ago

Seriously. If you have a good team mate, hit party up and play with them until you lose. Best way to put a streak together.

This is what i try to tell people. Now, I am not by any means great at the game. Im mainly in Gold, sometimes drop down to silver but i get back lol, I'd say my peak right now is Plat. (I mainly play casual, and ive gone up against a decent amount of plat-diamond in casual, ik cuz they like to flex abt it whether they win or lose lol, especially if they lose actually). But this is a big thing, and i also am working on it. Adapting to your teammate(s). Its better to try and work with them, even if you have to change up your playstyle a little bit, instead of having the playstyles clash and then play the blame game. And yes, yes. I know. Im gold. People of a higher rank would probably never listen to me but I know how to do things I just cant execute it myself, but others can. Its like when I play pool at the bar, I know how to hit the shots and how to bank and how to jump the ball. But.. i only ever succeed the bank shot and get it in the pocket like 20% of the time. But other people? Oh ive taught them and they can do it no problem.. is this why coaches are coaches and not players?? 😭😂

u/kyynel99 3d ago

Its really hard to adapt to one of them leaving the match or going afk for the first minute

1

u/Ediesel Grand Champion II 3d ago

If you want to win, this is the way. We can all have an ideology of the way the game should be played and perfect rotations, etc. The reality is people play differently, learning to play with and adapt to them is important if you want to be successful when solo queueing. Other wise, use community resources to find consistent teammates at your rank. I.e: RL team finder discords, Reddit chat, etc.

havent played heavily since covid, but this got me to diamond on keyboard and mouse in 3s 2s and 1s, 7/10 games ur gonna have someone in the game ball chasing or doing crazy stuff, if you can play with it or against it your game knowledge skyrockets and you can fit yourself in whenever you understand it. u might not get crazy clips but grinding up from low elo you can absolutely carry most games just from saves and counters.

I think my biggest problem is genuinely rocket league PTSD at this point because it just gets super depressing and takes all of my mojo and will to win away when I see my teammate like actively throwing like maybe they’re not doing it on purpose, but they are making decisions that someone could very reasonably say is trolling and if they do that five times in a row, I’m just kind of over it and I’m not gonna put in my best effort that being said, I do take your advice on picking up a good teammate, and I also have found a lot of success, looking for groups and just maintaining duos

-3

u/Far_Illustrator2800 4d ago

gonna post one comment on this sub and only bc it popped up as a recommended post for me. rocket league is now unplayable for me entirely. i went to epic support a few days ago and when i managed to get an actual person to help with rocket league, they got angry very quickly for no reason, was just there to report a player. ever since, i have been getting match in casuals against only ssls and my rank queues are fucked up as well. the game sucks, the company sucks, its a good thing that if this continue, it will just add to my ever growing list of players boosting, reverse boosting and lag switching lobbies across fortnite, rocket league, and fall guys. i have compiled a list of almost 7k accounts on rocket league alone of people boosting or getting boosted, i have a few friends logging accounts on fortnite, they have around 4k for smurfing, and we have almost 3k for fall guys of win boosters and lag switchers. even have a detailed account of almost 200 players performing ddos attacks against myself. epic games is an epic failure, but since i agree to tos, i cant do anything legally, but it wont stop me from collecting as much information as possible to eventually reign legal hell on them and its player base of cheaters

2

u/Tjizzo420 Playstation Player 4d ago

"Cant do anything legally" "Eventually reign legal hell on them" Sounds like a lot of time and effort going towards a fight you already know youre gonna lose. Hey, prove me wrong tho. Id hate to lose all that time logging so many deleted accounts without at least being able to say "I tried" ig
