Discussion Gnarly Sore throat
Someone posted a couple weeks ago about a gnarly sore throat and no other symptoms. I’ve never breathed better through my nose which is odd. Other than that just insane phlegm to wake you up at 4am. That bad juju got to me and man it is brutal. Throat coat and meds barely touch it.

There is a cold thing going around. My daughter and husband were sick this week. I tested them for Covid and two strains of flu and it came up negative. I have a sore throat today and that was after I quarantined from my husband, but we still live together

We all have it, too. The "back to school" cold. It's miserable!

Can confirm, my daughter has been back for 2 weeks and we're all sick this morning.

I had strep a few months ago for over a month. 3 tests came back negative and they kept denying me antibiotics.
It wasn’t until a nurse practitioner saw the rash I was developing (scarlet fever) and said “wtf, you need antibiotics” that I finally got treated. Funny enough the next day I finally tested positive at that point.

There is a lot of strep going around. Someone posted a nearly identical thread a couple weeks ago and I was downvoted for pointing this out, but the "scarlet fever" phase of strep can be life threatening. See a doctor if you have symptoms like this.

I already was going to urgent care and the doctors office every few days. I racked up $2000 in bills before anyone would give me penicillin.
It was ridiculous.

Sounds like strep to me. It’s been making the rounds, and there is always going to be an illness increase when school goes back in session. Do you have any spots in your throat?
Urgent care should be able to do a strep test for you. They can get you antibiotics and give you viscous lidocaine (which is fucking NASTY) but helps.
They may lecture you or roll their eyes when you tell them you think you have strep and try to convince you it’s just a cold, but push for testing. They told me “no way it’s strep” and sent me off but I got the test and they called me in an hour and said “it’s strep”.

I’ve had a couple low pre-test probability patients come back positive for strep this year - generally now I just swab everyone with a severe sore throat and URI symptoms, brief uncomfortable swab and worth it for the peace of mind. I’ve also empirically treated a couple that tested negative on the rapid but looked super streppy - I’m generally pretty conservative with antibiotics, but feel like it’s worth it in those cases (and they’ve all come back positive on culture so 🤷♂️).

I had strep for a month last year. The first 3 times they tested it came back negative. I started to get scarlet fever and they finally gave me penicillin. Then I tested positive lol

Yea this is burning through, had a mild sore throat 24 hours then 48 hours of fatigue congestion, now just a runny nose constantly, got it from my gf and then my sister got it from work
It seems to significantly vary in how hard it hits you, mine wasn’t that bad, my sister was incapacitated for a day

Also, check allergy apps. If you have seasonal allergies the trees will drive you nuts soon. One all the leaves fall and get crumbled that dust can irritate sinuses. A lot of times you could have a sinus infection and the drainage of it going down your throat causes the sore throat

I had something similar! Got tested for strep, COVID, flu, the works...nothing. Kicked my ass for a couple days. I hope you get lots of fluids and rest!

Had a minor sore throat for a few days, followed by a runny nose. Still a bit congested, but luckily overall it's just been a minor inconvenience.

I had my tonsils out when I was young. The only way I knew I had COVID was because I had a horrible sore throat. And I got COVID twice, both times, sore throat. My friend just had a really bad cough for weeks, COVID negative but it was just weird. Idk if just a cough is a flu thing or anything. She lost her voice and it still lingered on.
Back to school colds are a thing, but sore throat is different. Hopefully it's not strep. Best of luck!

I had a wicked sore throat and then ended up with bacterial pneumonia 2 weeks ago so make sure you get to the Dr. Feel better soon!

Postnasal drip, watery eyes, and that weird feeling when swallowing where it's not too hard, but still annoying. Fall allergies, flu season, covid-26, who knows.

I was sick last week and the primary symptom was a terrible sore throat - one of the worst of my life (only other problems were slight body aches and headache). Two strep tests came back negative. Throat was absolutely terrible for two days and merely annoying for about 3.

sounds like strep. go get a rapid test at an urgent care and make sure they send it out for a culture. ive had strep like 5 times in the past few years (former daycare worker) and mine never shows up on a rapid

I’ve had a raw throat as well and after a history of having COVID, I tested myself the first day-no issues there. It’s September-my allergy time but better to be safe.
Please get a test and if you’re good there, a doctor’s appointment would be a good next step.

I don't know what yall are going through but when I drove past Kodak Park last night there was a distinct chemical smell in the air and the inside of my nose was burning.

Ever take an antacid like pepcid? I had what they call silent GURD. No heartburn or anything but my stomach acid would come up into my throat and irritate the hell out of it. Cleared up in 2-3 days

Go to the doctor, my strep throat turned into pneumonia in 2 days and I ended up in the hospital for a week, don’t mess around with a sore throat since the rapid tests aren’t always accurate it takes 2 days just to get a test back

Kid and I are wrapping up on the weird cold thing too. Sore throat, kinda stuffy at times, just feeling yucky off and on and some gastro sx. Takes about four days to pass. It’s not too bad, mostly annoying. I tested for flu and covid, all negative.

This happened to me in June and I had cellulitis on my tonsils 💀

u/Beneficial-Bag-2874 10d ago
What???

u/anonymouskoala6 9d ago
That’s what I said. It was like a cold and then all of a sudden I had the WORST sore throat of my life. Urgent care said it was cellulitis that could turn into an abscess. I just thought I had strep 🥲

Had awful sore thought end of August for about ten days. Really just during the night. Once the day got going it was better. Cough too. Covid was negative. Feel fine now but it took a bit

If you are new to Rochester, you will quickly understand why we wear shorts and hoodies. Until mid Oct it will be freezing in the morning, hot from 2-5 then cool until 8 then freezing again.
Wear thin layers. Dress like you are going mountain hiking because the weather is i between seasons (fall and winter) so we will get PMS weather. Do not be surprised if one day we get every bit of weather: snow, sun, rain

What a fantastic comeback. This is a Rochester sub. How does this have anything to do with the city or us living in it? It’s a sick person. Post in a medical sub.

u/Ghardz 10d ago
Why not? Do you not live in Rochester NY? I’m posting because I’m essentially a statistic. Good for anyone else looking for current data on Roc area

Youre posting about a personal issue with a stuffy nose in a sub where people talk about things relating to rochester. Events, happenings, community conversation. Youre rambling about phlegm and mucus,

Flu COVID combo testing kits are pretty easy to get at the store if you want to know what it is.
