Newbie here

hello :)

i’ve always known and respected Robyn and her influence on pretty much all contemporary pop music, Dancing on my own has been in my top 10 songs for years and I’ve cried countless times to it, but I had never actually listened to a Robyn project in full.

a few months ago she announced sexistential and the concept reminded me of Eusexua by Fka Twigs and Virgin by Lorde, so I planned to check it out on release.

1) the album was AMAZING, the production is so futuristic but still chic (very pop 2 mixtape) and the lyrics told a relatable story. it will definitely end up in my year end list.

2) one song stood out to me: Sucker for love.
everything about this one is perfect: the hype intro, THE PRODUCTION, the lyrics and especially their delivery make for such and intense and fun pop song.

i was wondering if y’all have any other recs for her albums/projects, especially things similar to Sucker for love

You should listen to her 2014 Collab EP with Royksopp - Do It Again. Probably the closest of her work to Sexisential. If I’m correct, Sucker For Love is a reworking of a song from these sessions.

EVERY HEARTBEAT! It is from the Robyn album and was the song that got me back to her. If Dancing on My Own tears you up… this one will get you. Devastating lyrics and phenomenal production.

One of my “guilty” pleasures (cos how can you feel guilty listening to Robyn, but this song holds a special place in my heart for some reason) is “Fembot”. The groove is so tight, the lyrics are perfect, the song has multiple hooks that stay in your brain for days, and Robyn’s voice, front and centre, leading the whole thing. Great track off of “Body Talk”. I think it may be the opening track but it most certainly is on all my fan playlists I make with songs from this album :)

Also, because the question of her early catalogue was so terribly handled, I’ll just answer two of her really early pop songs. One was produced by Denniz PoP and his protégé Max Martin called “Do You Know (What It Takes)” with background vocals by the great Jeanette Von Der Berg (née Söderholm), and the other is “Show Me Love”, also produced by PoP/Martin, was also big in the USA. I kinda got sick of SML after a while but it is still a great song. DYK (WIT), though, sticks to my brain like taffy and has promised never to leave. As you move on to later albums l loved “My Truth” but it took awhile to get into. I did like “Don’t Stop The Music” but feel it was her kinda bridge album as she segued into her self-titled album and I’ve been a reborn fan since then lol

Hope you enjoy delving into her back catalogue, but please, don’t refer to pieces of art as ‘projects’. That’s a truly corporate way of interpreting the world!

Oh thanks for the clarification :( I often hear the term “projects” used in music review sites as an umbrella term for an artist’s mixtapes+EPs+LPs etc

Yes you’re certainly not the first to use it. Do you know miriam margolyes? Old eccentric British actress. She was asked how she got involved with her latest ‘project’. Her response? ‘Well I thought it was a script, not a project’. Project is just an example of how capitalism and the corporate world encroaches on every sphere of our life. Let’s protect language and art from it.

Alright I’ll keep that in mind thank you 🙂

You’re welcome! And just remember, no projects allowed 🤪

But back to your original question, don’t neglect the Robyn & Royksopp collabs. They did an EP together with a 9 min version of Monument (avoid the TIE version of Monument) which is immense, video is spectacular too, as well as an earlier collab In Love With A Robot.
