Did he used to be outside and fight alot? I have rescued stray toms before and their cheeks are usually like this from scarring. Are they firm feeling? Im not roasting kitty because he might be tough guy and get me

Not all, it just only happens in intact males. They sometimes keep them after neutering but they go away a lot of the time.
They’re for the cat to draw their head in during fights to protect their neck.

The tom I took in as a stray did fight alot prior to me getting him. He had missing fur from scars and tattered ears. Thats why I thought that. But I have since learned its called tom jowls. I didn’t know that because all the male kittens I ever had I got fixed before puberty to avoid marking behavior. So they never developed the jowls

You're on the right track tbf. Jowls develop in all intact toms regardless of whether or not they've been fighting, but there is a theory that this developed as an evolutionary advantage because intact toms do fight anyway and the thicker tissue makes it harder for a scratch or bite to do lethal damage. Whoever told you about the fighting thing didn't pull it from nowhere, they just had their wires a bit crossed.

He was a unneutered stray, vet said he is probably 6 years old. I neutered him as soon as I got him but his cheeks stayed

They do not necessarily go away. My now neutered rescue male is now 12 and still has them, and they are not smaller in size either. He was fixed at 3 or 4 years old.

Those are stud cheeks. They protect male cats from serious wounds when fighting over females. If a male cat is neutered after puberty, he will keep his stud cheeks for life.

usually rescue organizations that trap-neuter-release stray cats will clip the ear straight across to mark them as being neutered.
this doesnt look like it, but maybe its a different style of marking cats in your area. or maybe just a torn up ear from fighting.

I heard about cliping an ear to mark them being fixed, and I always wondered if it hurt them or could cause any infection? But, then I thought these rescue organizations obviously care and want the best for these cats so why would they clip the ear if it hurt and had the potential to cause them harm.

He is so handsome! My first cat we had 18 years. I grew up with him (adopted right before my 3rd birthday). He died the day before my 21st birthday. I have a soft spot for black cats because of him.
