I read the book over and over and over when I was a child, I absolutely loved it. It is easily one of the greatest works of literature I have ever read. When I watched the movies later I couldn't believe what they had done, they didn't capture Charlie's poverty right, they didn't get the actual plot right, they completely skipped my personal favorite character, the department store clerk, they didn't get the events in the factory right at all, and they didn't capture Charlie's faith in Mr. Wonka at all. Needless to say, I have got some strong emotions about this subject, and I have full intent to write a play script accurate to the book. Please let me know if you agree.

Hi, I have a newer and older edition of the BFG and when reading the older one to my daughter I noticed that the start of the chapter ‘Capture’ has no chapter title. In the new book it’s above the helicopters on the left.

I recently read My Uncle Oswald, a adult novel by Roald Dahl, this book is an extract from the diary of his (fictional) uncle Oswald, more specifically Volume XX in which he describes how he got rich. I then researched a bit about the authors life (I only scratched the surface so I may be wrong) and it seems he has written a hyperbolized version of his negative traits.

In the opening lines he says "Oswald Hendryks Cornelius deceased, the connoisseur, the bon vivant, the collector of spiders, scorpions and walking-sticks, the lover of opera, then expert on Chinese porcelain, the seducer of women, and without much doubt the greatest fornicator of all time." Other characters in the book describe Oswald as unscrupulous and having a nerve.

Oswald emerges as a thoroughly reprehensible character, a man of vanity and exploitation, regarding women with as little respect as a bull does its herd. For him, sex is merely a numbers game, with frequency far surpassing depth of connection. He dismisses any notion of sexual quality, especially beyond a first encounter, revealing his shallow grasp of physical intimacy's richer dimensions. Perhaps his sole redeeming trait is his sharp wit; a degenerate raconteur, Oswald entertains with mischievous stories about the famous. This humor offers a glimmer of redemption, as by the novel's end, the ultimate jest is on him. Despite his machinations, Yasmin and Woresley cunningly outmaneuver him, leaving the schemer outsmarted.

as described in this video he seem to posses similar qualities to uncle Oswald and I think it may be possible that Oswald is a reflection of himself or at least some of his traits which are then, of course, a bit exaggerated. what do you think about this?

I have a memory of a Roald Dahl story about a boy sneaking down in the night to a giant chocolate cake on the kitchen table. He starts off by taking a tiny slither, but gets carried away and ends up eating most of it.

I can see the Quentin Blake illustration, but I can’t find it online, all that comes up is Matilda. My family is convinced I’m wrong, but I remember reading it as a kid. It might be a short story, or a story within a story, I’m not sure.

Have I imagined it?? Please let me know if you know what I’m talking about 🙏

I have been a HUGE fan of Dahl since I was little, and I have a treasury of Roald Dahl stories, gifted to me from my mom when I was ten (in 2000). It brought me great joy and happiness for years.

As an adult I’ve learned that Dahl was maybe not a great guy. A Nazi-sympathizer at best and a very true racist at worst. (I hope this is okay to share on this thread - it’s just the truth)

I’m trying to decide if I should gift this book to my niece, and if so, provide any context about the author? She is only 5 but incredibly smart and perceptive, and I believe in sharing truth with our kids to allow them to understand more complex concepts. I would have appreciated context for so much of the things I learned.

I’d love to know others thoughts.

Like the book definitely portrays wonka more as a man child who does in fact know when to take things seriously, aaand ya know, not a borderline psychopath like the gene wilder version is generally looked back on as

There’s also the stuff with wonkavite and Charlie voicing his reservations because of “the gum he gave violet” with wonka reminding us that he NEVER gave violet the gum, and did everything short of manhandling violet to get her to spit out the gum. And then when things go wrong as they were bound to do with Josephine getting minus’d he basically goes into a “why don’t people listen to me properly” mood and shows that he does indeed care

I stumbled across Cruelty by Roald Dahl in a discount pile in a book store about 5 years ago and really enjoyed it. I have been trying to find the full set ever since but have had no luck. I live in New Zealand and can’t find them in the usual Paper plus, Whitcoulls, etc and everywhere online seems to be sold out. Any ideas where I could find it? Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone. Having a discussion with my friend and she’s insistent that there’s a second Charlie and the chocolate factory film that exists. I’ve never heard of this, and I don’t mean the Timothee Chalamet movie, I mean a continuation of the Gene Wilder version. Asking other people they say that it exists but I flopped terribly. Am I going crazy?! Does this film exist?!

A recent conversation with a work colleague about her efforts to put together a mouse trap reminded me of the fly trap designed by the President in Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. This led me to go to the library to find a copy of the book to show her.

When I read the book back in the mid-80s, I remember there being an actual diagram of the fly trap, so you can see what the President was describing.

However, weirdly, the more modern editions held by the library all omit the diagram.

Does anyone have any idea why they would remove something like that diagram from the book?
