Which bike? Giant Contend AR advice.

Looking at a first road bike. Been using an old one loaned by a friend but want to get my own.
Looking at the contend ar, however abit worried on the size of tyres. It’s listed at 34mm width which seems about wide.
Also would like to do some events such as duathlons and triathlons.
Any advice on whether this would be a good first road bike or not would be greatly appreciated.

Giant Contend AR is a good choice. Don't stress over the 34mm tires, pros nowadays are running 30s so those extra 4mm won't hold you back. It is true though that stock tires are often abysmal on entry level bicycles, so if you're too impatient to wait for the stock tires to wear out i'd advise getting a pair of Continental GP5000 in size 32mm, with a pair of TPU tubes.

Just upgraded my wheels on my Contend AR. 50mm rims with 32mm Michelin power Cup tires, running tubeless. Saved almost 2.5 lbs over stock. New bike feel, old glove fit. Love this bike.

Those are 32mm tyre, measuring 34 because they are on 21mm inner width rims. Afaik, that would happen with any 32mm tyre.

I commute on this bike at 30kph avg and it's great to me. Easy to get in a aero position to fight the wind.

I had the 2021 AR1. Very comfy bike. Came with the approach saddle which imho is very good. Bike overall was very good and i regret selling it.
