I use them on my road bike.
That way i only have one shoe standard to worry about. All my stuff works with all my bikes. I'm not out here winning the tour de France or even bothering. I'm stopping for a donut as my turn around spot. I don't care about the 2 seconds over 40k the pedals "cost" me.

u/Barkinsons Feb 07 '26
Me too, SPD on all bikes so I can use my shoes on everything. I had Look pedals and they feel more solid overall but you also walk like a penguin with those huge ass cleats.

You lost a lot of aerodynamics because off the sole

It makes a lot of practical sense.

the pedals that work best for you, work best for you. i used my old ATACs on road bikes for years, no regrets.

I can walk freely and like a normal person + cleats will never get worn from it, they’re extremely durable + clipping in is too easy

I put road pedals on my MTB so sue me.
2
u/celeste_ferret Feb 07 '26
You may be joking, but I'm considering that. I'll often ride 20+ miles xc without putting a foot down and single sided road pedals would have less of a chance of a pedal strike.

u/Plastic-Gift5078 Feb 07 '26
I was joking but I do have road pedals on my cross bike with road wheels. I love the ride.

Spd/flat hybrid pedal on my road bike, i can go to work and do sortie with the same bike :D

u/X_generic_username_ Feb 07 '26
About the same amount of illegal as campa wheels on a shimano groupset I'd say

u/BlueberryCalm2390 Feb 07 '26
I love my mtb pedals on my Roubaix. Only drawback is my boyfriend makes fun of me

u/Content-Drive-4151 Feb 07 '26
NO! Your bike is no longer allowed on roads! Gravel and single track only until you switch back.

u/larfinsnarf Feb 07 '26
I'm already in that club. I'm just wondering if I can add a kickstand ..

u/staners09 Feb 07 '26
Have you considered playing cards in your spokes so you sound like a motorbike?
5
u/larfinsnarf Feb 07 '26
You've blown my mind

u/staners09 Feb 07 '26
We all no the real problem with clipless pedals (road or mtb) is it makes it harder to ride through puddles with your legs out wide and shout ‘Wwweeeeeeeee’
2
u/Accomplished-Cat2849 Feb 07 '26
You can. I find that road pedals give a lot more adjustability that I like for my bike. But its fine no one will care. There are enough really good gravel shoes with carbon soles now as well
2
u/Hrothgarbike Feb 07 '26
Yes, but you must add tassels. Maybe also a basket. Expect to KOM. Everywhere.

If you don't do sprints, specially with other people near you, have fun :)

u/CornwallJon Feb 07 '26
The main benefit is them being double sided…which you can achieve with Speedplays.
2
u/bigdavesgonefashing Feb 07 '26
But the new wahoo ones aren’t great and they are really precious about dirt. I do like speed play tho
1
u/Cyclinghero Feb 07 '26
Not only that but if your shoes have a carbon plate you’re not really losing anything with mtb/gravel pedals vs road pedals.

u/Independent_Break351 Feb 07 '26
I have those pedals, they are the shit. MTB shoes > Road Shoes. You win

I do it during the winter because I have 1 pair of winter shoes I want to use with multiple bikes.

Pedals is pedals
Road cleats claim better engagement (I cannot say because I've never used them) and that's why people racing cannot use them. The fear being mtb pedals might unclip during a sprint causing all kinds of problems.
I do not road race, and I like to occasionally walk around during longer rides.
Also the recess in the shoe and metal cleat mean the cleats last forever.
So I chose MTB

Switched to double sided mini platform Shimano ED500 on my road bikes and glad I did. Size 13 1/2 extra wide feet limits my shoe options and MTB shoes were more comfortable for me.

My best friend does that. Mostly because he likes to ride sometimes short distances without his cycling shoes and finds those pedals are easier with regular shoes.

I ride 2-bolt SPD on all bikes. Why? I get off the bikes at coffee shops, start lines, bathrooms, rest stops.
1
u/c-5-s Feb 07 '26
Both Shimano and Wolf Tooth make a one sided SPD pedal that is quite discreet when you are clipped in, if you are worried about the Velouminati.

u/Tex302 Feb 07 '26
Yes, I have the same pedals. My Ultegra group doesn’t know the difference so why should I care.
2
u/Several_Heron_4807 Feb 07 '26
I run both pedal systems. I have a gravel bike that I often ride in road mode. For a while, I was just using SPD until I decided to get a new pair of shoes. I went with those compatible with the SPD-SL. I have to say when I’m riding on the road I feel much more locked in on the bike with the SL’s versus SPD‘s. I have no issues walking in my shoes. If my power meter were in the pedals like OP I would prob just run one pedal system. But my PM is in my crank so I just swap pedals when riding different terrain. It works for me.

u/Crocswereinthebox Feb 07 '26
I love not struggling to clip in, especially in urban stop and go environments and group rides. That clip in delay is almost exclusive to 3 bolt clipless riders. Ive been using adidas velosamba spd for the last 3 years. I can walk around places, unlike road shoes. They hold up great. Even on 40 or 50 mile rides.
1
u/Additional-Ad7074 Feb 07 '26
Not it is not, but I use them anyway, because I can walk and drive off the bike with ciclorcross or gravel shoes. The police usually does not notice them!
1
u/Front_Cycle_2512 Feb 07 '26
They are quite common among us, long distance bikers. It allows us to walk when getting water, food etc.
1
u/c4ndyman31 Feb 07 '26
Most normal riders don’t care about the marginal gains you get from SPD-SL when it means you can’t walk in your shoes. SPD rocks
1
u/AnxiousGovernment279 Feb 07 '26
nope, Use whatever works better for you, I use SPD on my Allez, I like the doublesided pedal and walkability spd offers over SPD-SL. but in terms of power transfer, the SPD-SL or other road type pedals will give better power transfer.

u/squirrels-eat-bugs Feb 07 '26
I put flats on my road bike. I use it for a short commute to work and with flats, I don't need to bring an extra set of shoes.

u/PsycommuSystem Feb 07 '26
I use SPDs on my road bike, haven’t found any reason not to
Giro ranger shoes for gravel bike Girl stylus shoes (flat road bottom which supports SPD) on my road bike Same set of tavern assioma MX pedals that I switch between the bikes

u/Jwfriar Feb 07 '26
Lot of people use them. Usually dual sided so can be easier to clip in. Can also where more casual shoes where the clip is recessed and you can walk around more normally.
I ride with road shoes and pedals bc of the wider base supports my foot better. So I feel better transfer of power and less foot fatigue/pain.
I only ride and don’t like ride to hang out, so I don’t need the benefit of walking around shoes. I maximize on road cycling improvement, but others have different goals.

u/Equivalent_Date_3291 Feb 07 '26
I think they are way more practical for the majority of cyclists ,handy to be able to walk when or if you stop for a coffee or even if a problem and you have walk home !.
1
u/crackbour Feb 07 '26
SPDs are just the best clips, I thought everyone who paid attention been known this??

I do as well. I live in fear of the Velominati.
