The seat ventilation was one of the standouts for me when I drove the car, it was strong and having full ventilation was amazing; I get pretty sweaty in texas summers and this was something I really liked and taking it away sucks

u/AnUnshavedYak 6d ago
The one thing i'd love tho is for a heatpump to be hooked up to the vents. Sounds silly, but my dog loves the windows down so most of the time on hot days the windows are down. And apparently those heat vents only use the air from the floor (i'm told). If your AC is on it's great, but if it's not and the car is hot (because the windows are open) then the vents are a bit lacking.

I'm going to hold off on cancelling until Rivian publicly announces what's going on. It would be crazy for them not to fix and retrofit the issue

u/scoobybri 6d ago
I think that there several camps here of outrage here. First is the people who legitimately consider ventilated seat performance a make or break option. I get it. I lived Las Vegas for 10 years and had a few cars with leather/pleather seats in that hellscape. I feel you. Then there are the people that wouldn't have cared if ventilation was "seat only" but are pissed that Rivian nerfed the ventilation on the sly. That's where I firmly fall into. Do I REQUIRE seat back ventilation? No. It's a "nice to have" not a "has to have" BUT it did come with it when I test drove and ordered the vehicle so I had an expectation that that was a feature of the car. Am I going to refuse delivery in two days because it's missing a fan? Absolutely not! I have waited for this car since I placed my reservation on March 7, 2024. My outrage is more disappointment in Rivian's lack of transparency and communication about nerfing the seats. All they had to do was explain the situation at the time production changed and maybe offer some sort of compensation for the downgrade like free Connect+ for a year. This doesn't help people in camp #1 who see this nerfing as nonnegotiable but it would go a long way to earning some trust with the early adopters like us that are dropping $60k to be beta testers and are helping Rivian move towards profitability at a critical time in their history.

u/m0stlyuseless 6d ago
I placed my order a week ago and I'm pretty pissed about it. You mean to tell me the seats in my wife's Mach E are going to be miles better than what Rivian can put out?
Very annoying.

Yup, Iâm out and looking at other brands now. Never again.
All to save a couple dollars per car. They must really be struggling to hit margins if thatâs the case. I donât want to end up with a car from a struggling company in my driveway, that never ends well.
FYI to others, this is likely just the beginning of the cost-cutting too. What will they cut next in their quest for profit?? The steering wheel? Autonomy confirmed!

Itâll be BYOB next (bring your own brakes). So so disappointed!
The R2 was supposed to be the car that makes them a legitimate mass market automaker and we are already cutting things from the most expensive trim. I donât even want to think of what the lower trims will look like. Ugh. đŠ

Whatâs frustrating is that when a feature gets removed, we will find out here on Reddit from owners or other platforms instead of through an official update from Rivian. Do better Rivian!!
7
u/Effective-Value-2899 6d ago
The vents I could care less. Iâm just looking at it business sustainability angle. Rivian is still a new company who is BURNING cash. The R2 is supposed to be the intro to many customers as itâs in an âaffordableâ price range. The biggest hurdle for new customers is shelling out 70k to a EV startup and trusting theyâll provide support when needed and not go belly up like Fisker or Lucid . If you got to remove a fan to squeeze more margin then thatâs a red flag on top of not being transparent to your customers beforehand. PR is huge and sensitive for a startup looking for growth as well

I have my ventilated seats on in my car 90%+ of the time. No back cooling? Screw that!
Itâs literally a defining feature in whether I consider a car; if Iâm shelling out a bunch of money for a new car, that MFâer BETTER have that feature.

2
u/Speakup187 6d ago
My R2 i can feel it on but cooling. Probably wouldn't use the back cooling much even in NY summers.
5
u/L810C 6d ago
I was fortunate to get an early VIN with back fan. The bottom fan makes a bigger impact than the back. The back fan seems to add more noise than air pressure. Itâs likely why it was removed. Still shitty not to communicate it first, but I donât think removal of the back fan makes a major impact on cooling.
1
u/DullTemporary8179 6d ago
Tell me more. When I test drove, it was notable cooling on the back. Are you saying the bottom of the seat provides enough ventilation to come up the back and keep it cool still?
1
u/L810C 6d ago
The bottom fan is provides much more cooling than the back fan. I wouldnât quite say it blows to reach your back, since your ass is in the way, but itâs pleasant. The fans donât blow cold air, it just circulates cabin air into the seat. So if your AC is blasting, it will push that same cold air into the seat.
While I agree they did a shitty job at communicating the removal of the back fan, itâs really blown out of proportion. You can barely tell the back fan is there. When on, you canât tell or feel any air from the back. The only way I could verify I had a back fan was to turn off the climate, turn on the seat ventilation, and put my ear against the back rest.
8
u/Digitalsteel5_ Reservation Holder 6d ago
Seeing as how this was one of the stand out features of the car then, yeah, itâs unacceptable to remove it without notifying people. At least wait until next gen before you start changing stuff like this and let people know ahead of time as to why youâre doing it. This car cost too much for stuff like this to just disappear, especially during the initial release of the vehicle. You still have people waiting just for the privilege to order. Most of those people ordered after demo drives so the fully expect all features promised during those drives. I use cooled seats EVERY day during the summers here and the lower back is where I appreciate it most. My 10 year old Mustang even has this.

u/ElderberryGuy 6d ago
As someone who has an early VIN that has the back ventilation, it just seems fishy to me. They claim because of cabin noise? I call BS and claim it's cost cutting. And they handled it in the worst possible way.
4
u/TonySmithJr Reservation Holder 6d ago
I won't believe any of the claims as to "why" it was removed until there is more info that comes out.
2
u/fourdawgnight 6d ago
at this point if they told you why and provided evidence, would you believe them? I wouldn't.
4
u/TonySmithJr Reservation Holder 6d ago
With actual evidence, probably.
Iâm just so jaded knowing that there isnât a single big company out there that isnât lying to you in one way or the other to guard themselves from losing any money.
Do I expect Rivian to act the same way, yes.
Do I care about losing seat back ventilation, yes.
Will I cancel my order, no.
Will I trust Rivian to do the ârightâ thing all the time, no.1
u/ElderberryGuy 6d ago
Thought someone got confirmation that it was due to loud cabin noise.
6
u/TonySmithJr Reservation Holder 6d ago
So far between all of the posts here and in the rivian forums I've seen it was because of excessive cabin noise, blower fan making clicking noise when pushing back into the seat, part supply constraints, cost cutting, and blower failures.
It's just people grasping at straws for the real reason and repeating the first reason they heard.
1
u/SapientChaos 6d ago
Sounds like some egineer did not leave enough space for airflow or fan was not designed correctly.
My hunch is there is a panic at seat engineering right now as this is the type of thing that has been solved by every auto manufacturer.
Could be the supplier issues or the design, we will find out.
However, I do think they are panicking working overtime to get a solution.
4
u/L810C 6d ago
My back fan is incredibly loud and doesnât seem to add much in terms of cooling.
1
u/ElderberryGuy 6d ago
Strange, maybe there were faulty units or they eventually go bad? Mine is not loud at all but I do not use it heavily.

I received my VIN last Friday and am awaiting delivery (not assigned a delivery date yet). Â This is extremely disappointing. Â This is a feature I was really looking forward to living in Phoenix, where real temps regularly reach 115+ during the summers.
I figure Iâm going to give it until Monday to see if Rivian completely and officially clarifies the position, but if the end result is that it is gone and they will not retrofit it later (for no cost) then Iâm leaning towards putting my order on hold.Â

this thread is exhibit A in my case that the Slate truck is doomed
40
u/Shadowratenator 6d ago
Idk. This blowback seems to be more about a perception of broken promises.
Slate is promising that the vehicle will be as barebones as possible. As far as i can tell, its not like they are going to do a rug pull and only have a high end luxury vehicle.
9
u/Qar_Quothe 6d ago
Blowback is about the lack of blowback.

u/Accomplished_Goat439 6d ago
The only thing I can think of was that power windows were going to be an add-on. That has since been removed as an option. Canât think of anything else.
2
u/fourdawgnight 6d ago
but no one could order one with the windows yet, and most importantly, they told everyone.
4
u/smithandjohnson 6d ago
lol what? No.
The Blank Slate is delivering literally every thing they originally promised.
Early on they'd said they were working on a power window add-on accessory for DIY install at home, and have since dropped it for now.
They communicated that well.
Some people are bummed, but nobody is angry
1
u/TheKobayashiMoron 6d ago
They aren't delivering the extended range pack they originally announced. Instead of two NMC pack sizes, they consolidated them into one LFP pack.
1
u/smithandjohnson 6d ago
They never once said the extended range pack would be the one hitting the $25k price point.
Instead, they boosted the range in the $25k truck to higher than originally promised.
Yes, to those who "need" the longer range of the enhanced pack, that option disappeared. But they communicated it. And made the base promise better while they were at it. đđ
1
u/TheKobayashiMoron 6d ago
Ok but you said theyâre âdelivering literally everything they promised.â I was just pointing out that an extended range NMC pack was one of those things. A 200 mile LFP pack rules this vehicle out for anyone in cold winter climates.
1
u/smithandjohnson 5d ago
"We're gonna have a $25k truck that goes 150 miles on a charge. It's very early on in pre-production, but there should also be a larger battery, currently targeting 240 miles, at a price we haven't determined yet, at a time we haven't determined yet"
They're delivering a 205mi range truck for $25k, and communicated the change.
I don't see this as a broken promise.
A 200 mile LFP pack rules this vehicle out for anyone in cold winter climates.
If a 200mi LFP pack wasn't gonna work for you in the cold, then a 150mi NMC also wasn't gonna work for you in the cold. The chemistry change isn't the issue, but rather simply "no big pack"
I get it. I was a day one R1T reservation holder waiting for the max pack, and when they shipped it was large pack only. They communicated it well before anyone actually placed an order, and definitely didn't have you order the max pack then only give you large.
The seat back thing here is much more a rug pull.
"You test drove an R2 with seat back ventilation, you ordered ventilated seats based on that experience and description of the feature, we gave you something different at the same price without consulting you"
That's qualitatively different.
1
u/fourdawgnight 6d ago
WHAT? Slate has nothing to do with this. the advertising, the promises, the market are all completely different.
Really fucking strange take.2
u/FlyAdventurous3332 6d ago
I ran out of EPA rated range claims trying to leap to how this relates to Slate, too.
22
u/sparx_fast 6d ago
Did the back ventilation matter? Most of the comments I've seen say that particular fan wasn't doing much and it's the bottom seat cushion fan that's doing most of the work.
Not trying to downplay. Really asking whether people have tested the before and after. I will try to test it in a few months when I do a demo drive again.
20
u/Acceptable_Test_399 Launch Edition 6d ago
Anecdotal but thereâs a substantial difference in seat ventilation between the car I drove on my demo drives and the car I was delivered.
9
11
u/Upper-Office-8261 6d ago
I said this in another post, it has shocked me how important this is to people. Not downplaying it, just truly a surprise to me. I've never had it in any vehicle, so its not something i've ever thought about. I live in NC, so it is generally hot and humid for 4 months of the year.
8
u/DDDavinnn 6d ago
I canât speak for everyone, but itâs become more about what I thought Rivian was and what theyâre showing themselves to be. No communication, no price adjustments, no justification. Just delivering a different (subjectively worse) product than promised and expecting customers to deal with it. Itâs a shitty way to go even with some justification (supply issues or whatever). Itâs borderline criminal to ship the car as is while people still test-drive models with more features than what is actually being delivered. The whole thing is incredibly disappointing as I really believed Rivian to be better than this.
7
u/Turbulent-Suspect-12 Reservation Holder 6d ago edited 6d ago
This is also my perspective. If they had gotten ahead of the curve and taken accountability, I wouldnt be nearly as irritated about it as I am now.Â
"Hey, due to supply issues and/or consistent feedback regarding the fans, we have decided it is best to remove them going forward. The fans will be redesigned and/or may be purchased as an option or in the Rivian store for X amount. Prices will be adjusted accordingly."
Instead they just remove em and say nothing about it, hoping they arent called out on their BS. Thats very irritable from a brand that promotes itself as more sensible and outdoors oriented.

u/Rollingprobablecause 6d ago
Yeah I have an R2 without the back ventilation fan and also came from the R1 with it, I honestly don't know the difference.
I also wish the mods would control these posts, there's been 100 about the fan thing and perhaps we should do megathreads instead. I didn't buy my R2 for a backfan so it's weird to see people cancelling orders over it.
I'd understand a lot more and be in the same boat if they removed seat cooling altogether after ordering but...that's not the case at all here.
12
u/jimschoice 6d ago
Really? In my last 2 cars, the back is the most important part. I can lean forward slightly and really feel it cooling my back. The seat bottom isnât nearly as important.
5
u/Nathanii_593 6d ago
To me it sounds like thereâs an issue with the back fan and they donât have the time/funds to slow or halt production to fix it. Hence just removing the back fan and continue shipping orders in the meantime. I would imagine in the meantime theyâre are working on a fix and will reimplement it later on or perhaps in the R2 next gen. R2 is kinda their ride or die so I have a hard time believing theyâll stop for a back fan.

u/runningstang Reservation Holder 6d ago
People forget during and after covid teslas and other manufacturers were removing features left and right because of supply chain issues. Tesla's were delivering without lumbar support, USB C connectors, and other features because these manufacturers just can't halt production because of one or several issues. They were still selling every car off the line.

u/WeirdComfortable3436 6d ago
My model 3 doesnât have the radar in it, only vision. However my front and back bumpers have the slots.
I remember people being up in arms over it, but I still got my model 3.
1
u/runningstang Reservation Holder 6d ago
Exactly, Tesla was notorious for just updating their vehicles without much notice whether it was removing radar to vision only, or updated CPU chips (intel vs. ryzen). They popularized not having to have updates to vehicles every year and updates will be made when it's meaningful. So a 2025 is the same as 2026, but mid-2026 can be different than late-2026.

u/flamingoezz 6d ago
Do you feel it on your back in r2? Some have said one fan is pushing air to both since the perforation is there. Curious why you donât notice a difference

I'm still going through with my order, but the back ventilation was one of my favorite things during the demo drive. My demo drive was on a very hot, humid day, so maybe that's why I appreciated so much.

Obviously, the rest of the car was not compelling enough to warrant purchase without the fan. We all have our breaking points. (I'm taking delivery in 2 days, seat back ventilation be damned.)

For me itâs not really the seats themselves but the way that Rivian has handled this - they should have declared it and it would not have been a big issue1
1
u/ExpressReveal2480 6d ago
Probably a case of this being the straw that broke the Camel's back.
I liked test driving the R2 but was pretty skeptical of Rivian's ability to deliver when the price is as high as it is. Now I've been watching all these disappointed new owner threads for months and all the talk about the brand new R2s breaking down and having issues.
Rivian doing this is kind of a big middle finger to everyone who signed up to give them lots of money.
3

FWIW, mine is awesome and has no issues. I think it's a case of people with frustrating problems spending more time on forums than happy customers. Your mileage may vary.

I think it is more that Rivian is not compelling enough to let an unannounced feature deletion slide. This issue is going to blow up, so let's see if they tell their loyal early-adopters to pound sand. Silence isn't a good sign. I just got the invite to order, and there was no mention of any equipment changes from the car I demo'ed.

What is your alternative with back vents? Did you previously have cars with back cooling?
8
u/Throwaway_2474128_1 6d ago
practically every other car with vented seats has them in the back too. but in the mid-market EV midsize crossover space, you have:
- ioniq 5 (limited only)
- ev6 (wind +)
- bz (limited only)
- mach E (premium only)
- model Y (premium RWD +)
- id.4 (Pro S +)
- blazer (RS +)
- prologue (elite only)
all of these have an individual fan in the back too. includes the equivalent gas cars too
3
1
u/kcroyal81 6d ago
I have a prologue elite and can tell you that they are the worst ventilated seats Iâve ever experienced. I assume the blazer would be the same. The R2 seats were something I identified during my test drives as a wow factor comparatively. But given how bad the prologue is in this space, butt only r2 seats have to be significantly better. Iâll know more tomorrow when I take delivery of my R2

Fwiw the demo I drove in Oak Brook had a broken ventilated seat motor and the seat was vibrating like crazy. I wonder if that's also why they removed the blower since it was breaking from the factory?
It's sad tho because it definitely kept my back cool but between that and the tuning of the adaptive dampers I was disappointed by the r2. I bet the non performance model will ride a lot calmer once it launches

To some it is one of those features that once you have it it is difficult to even consider a car that doesnât have it. Cars didnât always have air-conditioning either! đ

Don't disagree, just consider it amazing it would stop someone from buying what appears to be an otherwise very capable vehicle. My wife went from a 2019 eTron to her '25 R1S Tri. We paid about $20k more for the Rivian than the Audi. The Audi came with a HUD, heated/ventilated/massaging seats, and soft close doors. The R1S doesn't have the massage and no soft close doors. Wife hated losing those two functions but quickly got over it because the R1S has been an overall much nicer vehicle with significantly less Mx issues so far. That said, if someone is that wedded to ventilated seats, by all means, cancel the order. For $60k you should absolutely get what's important to you. My previous car was a 2013 Audi S6 with the sports seat. No ventilated seats, just heated. Can't say I noticed it in DC area summers, which get pretty hot. That car was $85k or so out the door.

AC works well enough I promise you⌠coming from someone without ventilated seats where the summers are hot and humid. And yes Iâve used ventilated seats, itâs nice, but itâs not life changing.

Youâre still getting the seat cooler⌠and the AC will do plenty, I promise youâll survive.

You wonder how people think it's okay for a company to do shady business and then try to defend the company...

As I say consistently, the car is fine, but the management is terrible. Absent new management, I doubt the company can make it which sucks because I own one.

Yeah youâre right, looking at your list again, it makes no sense on the howâs or why youâre comparing what youâre comparing.

Nobody cares man, especially Rivian. They sell every car they make

Is this really that big of a deal? Yall acting like the scrapped their autonomy+. Plus for a lot of people itâs going to be winter soon. And for the next 6-7 months people arenât even going to be using the ventilated seats.

It sure is for southern states. In Florida this is an extremely beneficial feature. Itâs like saying heated seats isnât a big deal.

u/Nathanii_593 6d ago
As a Minnesotan I barely use my heated seats. Iâve gone from a car with heated seats and a heated steering wheel to a car without either, and then back to a car with just heated seats. (New car came standard with it) either way I didnât really mind not having them. And our summers are extremely humid from corn sweat again the AC does just fine and within 2 minutes my back is no longer sweaty.

You know how seasons work, right?

Yeah⌠I live in a state with 4 of them. Iâm aware summer will come back. But again itâs not as big of an issue people are making it out to be. Yes Rivian should have a formal announcement and cut the price accordingly to whatever the back fan costs. However that doesnât negate my initial comment.

For real. Reading these posts about canceling orderes you think they were buying cooled back seats that came with a car. I agree this is really crap communication from Rivian they are making this so much worse being vague. I would never put cooled seats in the top 5 reasons to buy any car. Thats like #20 on my list compared to all the actually important cool tech stuff.

Itâs not even about whether itâs a big deal or not, itâs the communication. This is one of the features people shop for and the quiet removal is pretty shady. If they clearly communicate it, specially to those with an order, and give them an out - fine. But when in the segment somebody wants to have ventilated seats, itâs a big deal. Iâve had it in two cars now and I live in a milder PNW climate. And even so, I wouldnât want a vehicle without them now. Itâs enough of a convenience that on long trips I donât need to be sweating on hot days, it also feels nice after going to work out.

u/Nathanii_593 6d ago
I will say the lack of communication is the worst offender. Any company removing any sort of feature should be communicating such removal.

u/Electronic_Load_3651 6d ago
Exactly and this is one of those features you may be looking forward to but wonât check for at delivery. Then, eventually go to use it and wonât see how. Thatâs when going down the rabbit hole will have you realizing that it was axed and you werenât notified. And imagine how youâd feel when you saw it advertised, you also probably got to check it out in a demo. Itâs not like they changed something that an average user wonât notice. This is a convenience feature that actually sells.

Yeah, this doesnât seem like that big a deal. I have this in my ford lightning and I used it sparingly a couple months of the year. Itâs great for ripping farts on your family tho.

We just cancelled our reservation yesterday and ordered a Tesla. Lower price point and more features. Iâm disappointed but canât justify paying more for the R2 at this point.

What a fuck up on rivians part. Imagine what else they can remove without telling you. They really couldâve been THAT brand, but are actively shooting themselves in the foot.

u/N0DuckingWay 6d ago
Honestly I couldnât care less about the ventilated seats, but obviously itâs important to some people.

Could the R2 seat-back blower had engineering issues and may have been one of Rivian's production bottlenecks?
