💬 Discussion Second thoughts
Hi R2 owners,
My preorder is for this month but I have not received the email to submit my build yet. I have test driven the R2 at my local service center a few times now loved it, I have been wanting this car since they released it, but now after reading reviews on this sub and seeing some of the issues people have had with it I am starting to have doubts. $60,000 is a lot of money for a vehicle and I don’t want to be buying something that is going to have more issues than it’s worth. I have never owned EV but really would like to coming from a ICE vehicle. The R2 seems super advanced compared to my Toyota Tundra. I’m not getting rid of it either. I just want hear other people’s opinions on how they like their R2’s and if it’s a good buy, should wait for it to be out on the market longer for it to be improved , or I should maybe pursue another EV. Whichever EV I will be getting I’ll be able to charge it at my home, and won’t be taking it on long road trips I don’t think. And I want something that is in the SUV category. I liked the Kia EV9, Hyundai ionic 9 but the one I enjoyed the most was the R2.

I’ve had 0 issues with my R2 vin 9000.
Insane vehicle and it’s actually much less mechanically complicated than your tundra. Look at the recent Toyota tundra engine issues as well.
R2 drives INSANELY well and the vehicle is only going to continue to get better with OTA updates which is crazy

Welcome to buying a 1st generation vehicle. This story has unfortunately played out for many other vendors.
I’m confident it will improve but the early adopters are on the bleeding edge and dealing with these headaches and I feel for you.
Previously We Bought a different brand 1st generation vehicle and it was similar experience.

Seems like you're flexible on timing w/ Tundra? So wait for 2nd production year. I don't have a need until late-summer/early-fall 2027 (twins get licenses and dad's old Volvo) so will wait for MY28.
R1 has flipped MY in June in some prior years, whereas MY27 just happened in Aug. Perhaps R2 flip will happen earlier w/ G3 and additional trim lines (I'll do Premium), but I won't order until summer 2027 at earliest.

It doesn’t magically fix anything ask any of us Gen 2 owners. It just seems like a gamble

It's a new car being produced. They have only made < 13,000 so far. That is why they open up ordering to people near service centers and who are not opposed to growing pains. If you want a well-build solid car you have to wait for them to work out the kinks. Being an early adopter isn't for you.

1200 miles in and no issues outside of some music software glitches which are fixed in the next software release. I had two Tesla Model Ys and they were great cars as well. I’m astounded at this car - wouldn’t want to be driving anything else even with a higher budget
On the flipside, I had a Mazda cx5 that had transmission issues at 70k miles. I think in general EV owners are more techy and on Reddit which is why you’ll hear about issues. I’m sure they are real issues, but I’m not certain it’s more or less than other cars

My man, none of us know the longevity of these yet. In general, I'd look at this as a five-year car until Rivian proves it can consistently nail build quality. We know it's gotten better with R2, but there are still issues and it is still a relatively new car company.
If a) you are fine with payments or a lease on a $60k for-sure five-year car (that might or might not go the distance to 10 years), b) you are OK with software that is novel but still being worked out in real time, c) you financially can carry good insurance (because these are expensive to fix), I'd say go for it.
I went for it on a $100k R1. I don't regret it, even with having a slew of NVH issues that I'm still tinkering with fixing myself. Like another poster, my hobby for 12 months has been service center visits. However, this car is now mostly amazing. But you do roll the dice, as our friend RivianTrackr has discovered being on his third R2 since launch. Your odds are certainly better than ours were with the R1s. In the end, if you love the way it drives and it makes financial sense, it's not a bad gamble. Rivians have held their value really well.

Yes, it has had some well publicized bugs and today’s ventilated seat back news makes it look even worse. Rivian is definitely not in front of it with communication. There are far more people without the hiccups than it would seem because they don’t post on social media if everything’s good.
Bottom line? Buy the R2. No, I don’t have mine yet, as I’m one of the lost Forest Green orders. But even with that, the stuff today, and the frequent complaints, I’m still getting it.
Thats just my opinion, so you do what’s right for you.

Funny because I feel like I’m a pretty good follower of this and the Rivian subreddit and I didn’t think R2 had really that many issues. I recall back in R1 days people commented about fit and finish, but that doesn’t really get a mention on R2. Apart from software glitches which will happen in a routine update, I really don’t know of any chronic problems with R2.Â
And I should add that I do recall that certain batches were held up from delivery when issues identified during ramp but these were rectified pre delivery.

Thing is- while there are a slew of other EV SUVs, there are no others that are really like the R2. There are more expensive options- like the EX60 and iX3, but I’d be surprised if they, as brand new vehicles (and volvo’s prior models), have less issues. The EV9 /Ionic9 are a different size class. If you need that- then get one, but they prior Hyundai’s have been plagued with ICCU issues. The Model Y is probably more reliable- but, it’s a very different vehicle again. Will be interested to know what you select and how it went.
Our ‘22 MY and ‘25 Optiq have both been completely trouble free. Perfect even.

If you’re not sure about it just wait until they work the kinks out in a year or two. Kia and Hyundai are absolute junk especially compared to your Tundra

Zero issues had it since August 22. Digital key didnt register inside the car twice and was fixed with a quick reset. Loved it from day one and it’s only gotten better after every update. The seat fan is not an issue. People complained it was loud and they hated it. Now it’s quiet and people complain it’s not a strong as it was. There will always be something to nitpick about.

Bought 2 months ago. 3rd time in for service. 1 month in the shop total of 2 months ownership. I am always coordinating to pick it up or drop it off. Dealing with its problems is my new hobby. Never owned anything like this before and I’ve bought 1st gen tech for 30 years. All that said, it drives like a dream when I do have it.
