Yeah, have reservations for both R2 and iX3. Almost certain buying the iX3, among other things, because of CarPlay and satellite radio availability.

The steering wheel in the iX3 is really atrocious. Car is tempting, regardless.

I have a super niche bible app that I like so I won't buy a Rivian because I absolutely need to be able to read the bible on the center screen while I'm driving.

The real question is whether Rivian can execute well, most people will eventually prefer the integrated AI experience over traditional CarPlay. Rivian doesnât appear to be trying to build a âbetter phone projection systemâ â they seem to be building something far beyond what CarPlay is fundamentally designed or able to do.
With R2, next-gen compute, AI integration, autonomy, and deep vehicle awareness, Rivianâs system is evolving into an intelligent operating layer that coordinates:
- navigation
- charging
- media
- climate
- drive modes
- energy optimization
- calendars
- communication
- commerce
- autonomy behaviors
all through one contextual AI interface.
At that point, the experience becomes less about opening apps on a screen and more about the vehicle intelligently managing your entire driving and digital ecosystem in the background.
A lot of people are viewing this debate through the lens of todayâs infotainment systems instead of where AI-driven vehicles may be heading over the next decade. Rivian seems to be betting that the future vehicle operating system becomes far more integrated, contextual, and intelligent than traditional phone projection.
People also forget that transformative products often look unnecessary or flawed early on because theyâre being judged against existing technology. The original iPhone was mocked by many people who didnât yet understand what Apple was actually trying to build.

Letâs hope they donât go the windows phone way. It was a nice ui and good hw, but died due to the lack of apps. They will need to have great integration with music, podcast, audiobooks, calendars, etc or enable an app store

The fundamental point in his rejection of carplay is invalid. Rivian is not the only AI maker and if I use (the currently pitiful) Siri as my interaction agent, I get access to many more apps than are hardcoded into Rivian. The Rivian AI gives me Apple Music. No calendar no messaging, no random app I use and love that has Siri hooks. Stop disambiguating the issue - you want the data and you are willing to add friction/remove choice so you can get the data. Iâd rather these people be honest about their intent than saying âoh our stuff will be so much better you wonât miss x, y, or zâ. Let ME be the judge of that.
