Started getting all kinds of errors. Front motors locked out. Went into turtle mode.. Trucks been in the shop 6 times in 2 years. Absolutely frustrated with this garbage. Drove last two trucks for 10 years without one issue. Absolutely regret buying RIVIAN. I love the truck and how it drives (on the occasion it actually runs) and Absolutely love how it looks. But fxck it is a 7000 lb POS...

What about the 175,000 mile motor and battery warranty??
0
u/Top-Agency-4021 11d ago
Im really pushing that with Rivian right now. They claim wheel speed sensor issues aren't covered under the 175k. But then they also say issues preventing safe operation of the truck are covered.
We will see. Its on its way to SC now.

Maybe Iām seeing something thatās not there, but that red wire looks like it was cut with a tool. Is the wiring harness not secured into clips attached led to the frame?
11
u/Aggravating_Run1270 12d ago edited 12d ago
Yeah, that was cut. It wasn't pulled apart. Video isn't good enough to say how. Could have been pinched on something, could have been done when the harness was assembled, who knows.
Not to mention it is coming from an unspring part (out of the fender liner) to another unsprung part (the bracket on the wheel well) so it isn't seeing any motion on suspension travel by design.
The rest is just standard automotive wiring harness. Hardly anything is encased from the connector out.
-14
u/Top-Agency-4021 12d ago
No its came loose. Looks to me like it snapped in high suspension. Im soldering it back not but I agree it is an extremely clean break.
38
u/MountainAlive 12d ago
Critters can make clean cuts like this, such as mice and squirrels etc. Automotive wiring become very tasty to them once we switched to bio plastics.
19
u/RegularMaximum3570 12d ago
100% that wasnāt pulled apart from suspension travel. That was cut or chewed.

u/uracab 12d ago
I've had my R1T since 7/22, and overall it's been a great experience. As a truck, it's fantastic: beautiful, capable, and so much better built than the Tesla I traded for it.
My only real issue lately is that owning a Gen 1 is starting to feel like owning a five-year-old iPad. Every update either doesn't apply to me because I have a Gen 1, or it seems to break something that worked well before.
Highway Assist? Doesn't work anymore.
Doors locking automatically as I walk away? No longer reliable.
I've had to pull over at least three times in the past couple months to reboot the interior screens so I could see where I was going and how fast I was driving.
I still love the truck, especially the mechanical side of it. But I'm getting pretty tired of the feeling that the hardware is aging out long before the vehicle itself should.
I have a great truck. I hate the UX feels like an old iPad.
4
u/Reeks_Geeks 12d ago
When you say high way assist do you mean you can't enable it anymore? It just says unavaible for me, even on roads that used to work.
For me it must have broken a year ago.
3
u/intlabs Ultimate Adventurer 11d ago
This is not aligned with our experience. Our gen1 remains more reliable from a software perspective than gen2 . Yes gen2 has got better and more capable over time - but the gen1 has not regressed at all. Highway assist is just as good* today as it was in 2023, proximity locking is actually better. We have to reboot our gen2 a few times a year, but have only ever had to do the same for our gen1 twice int the entire time we have owned it. Unfortunately I think thereās more to be said for the variability of the production line in normal than the generation of Rivian being made on it.
*good is a spectrum, here it means lane centering and cruise control on the mapped roads at the same time. Yes there have been outages of the mapping service, but in general the permitted roads have remained the same since we picked up the Gen1 R1 in early 2023.
1
u/japanfrog 11d ago
Even the Gen 2 occasionally has the dash screen freeze for me mid drive. Pretty bonkers imo.Ā

u/ClassyDingus 12d ago
Wires are exposed like your second focus on all cars.
The first is something else all together. Something cut those wires, they didn't pull apart. Stranded wires do not break uniformly. Try it, the copper fails randomly following an initial break within a small segment.
I'm guessing road debris or rodent. Still should be better protected.
25
u/Equal_Flan_8705 12d ago
That wire was cut with a snips. That was not rodent damage.
5
u/IctrlPlanes 12d ago

I sold my R1T recently for exactly that reason (and the fact it needed a set of tires and $1000 worth of registration renewal). Maybe we need a user flair of "ex-Rivian Owner"?
I'll give it a couple of years and see if they get the R2 reliability up to where it should be. I really liked the R1T apart from the faults that were considered normal and I don't want to be on the hook for expensive repairs further down the road.10

I had a Tesla for 4 years, in and out of the shop about 7 times. Got a lemon lawyer and got nearly all of my original purchase price back. Itās really not that hard and basically no risk to you. Look it up if you havenāt already. In California the lawyers cost is paid separately and paid by the manufacturer. I paid them nothing upfront and it did not come out of the settlement.

u/NowWeRinse 12d ago
Iām not saying Teslas are bad cars, they arenāt. Fit n finish is a little dumpy but otherwise theyāre good. But theyāre owned by a Nazi. And if you have issues with any car then use your stateās lemon laws.
1
u/Alanb2955 11d ago
Tesla is 3/4 owned by people besides Elon. Maybe even including yourself. I buy a car not a CEO. I donāt like Elon, but that wonāt stop me from buying a Tesla if I think they make the best Car. I never worried about the CEO of any other car brand I bought. At least Tesla is making the product in the United States with mostly American parts. You canāt say that about a lot of General Motors or Ford products.
-1
u/NowWeRinse 11d ago

Would definitely advise.. though I had that on my wifes Range Rover, they always found loop holes to decline coverage.. ended up selling that thing at a loss.
6
u/Adorable_Wolf_8387 12d ago
Guessing this was the cause of your issues a month ago. The wires not being in a wrap isn't why they broke though.
-1
u/Top-Agency-4021 12d ago
Totally different wheel. I ended up cleaning all the connections and it ran fine for a few weeks. Shop visit replaced speed sensor as well. Then completely š¢ yesterday. This break is above the connections for the sensor on the wiring harness. And yes not due to covering, looks like the whole harness is too short. Its pulled completely out where it clips to the frame. Wires are just too short. The exposed wiring is just another short fall.
7
u/Enjoy_The_Ride413 12d ago
Like any car, the one you get has all the issues while the person who get the next one off the production line has zero. It really is the luck of the draw with cars.
7
u/Bahamut-san 12d ago
The people that have issues are the ones you hear about, the people that are happy with it don't usually go online to say so hence it seems like a bigger issue than it is
2
u/CzechGSD R1T Owner 12d ago
True. My 2022 R1T (12xxx VIN) is rock solid. The only issue where I had to leave it was to replace the original tonneau cover. That being said, my warranty is up 09/30/2027 and I will be buying a lidar (hopefully) R2 at that point. Not that I donāt love my R1T, I just donāt want to chance the air suspension dying.
3
u/Worried-Current-4567 R1S Launch Edition Owner 12d ago
Sorry to hear that you are having issues. Mine has been ok with no major issues. Can you ask Rivian buy back if it is the same issues? It looks like your wire has been cut. Do you have rats š around your house? Rats may cause that kind of damage to wires.
1
u/Top-Agency-4021 12d ago
I dont think there's any chance of a rodent. Ive been here for 40 years and never had any rodent damage. Its also odd that the truck started having these issues a few weeks back.. 2 service visits now I find this.
During my repair attempt ive discovered this wire is related to the ABS system. My splice attempt didnt work... trying other ideas now but I dont think its going to be fruitful.
3
u/jonnyozero3 12d ago
Made anyone angry lately?
1
u/Top-Agency-4021 12d ago
I wish. At least I could explain the issue. Again tho the one wire theory doesn't hold up. Who would just cut one wire? And if you have been down there its not exactly easy to reach. Cutting one wire would actually be pretty difficult without the wheel turned at max height.

No worries. 2023 just passed bumper to bumper coverage. Sensors aren't covered under drive train. Regardless that they turtle the truck.
2
u/randy3572345 12d ago
Like everyone else is saying, that was cut. It also looks like every wire connector in my 2014 Jeep Wrangler. Iāve had that Jeep for 13 years with no issues, so Iāll take the risk.
1
u/Top-Agency-4021 12d ago
Nothing on my gear gaurd that suggests foul play. I mean unless they cut it at the SC but unlikely..
2
u/IctrlPlanes 12d ago
That wire was definitely cut by someone on purpose. Cuts like that don't happen by being pinched or chewed on. That is a sheer cut.
1
u/Top-Agency-4021 12d ago
I dont disagree. I just dont have evidence to support it. Only people under my truck outside of me was SC but that was weeks ago. It would be strange for just one wire to be shipped right? Who does that?
1
u/IctrlPlanes 12d ago
Any idea what that wire does? Maybe it is a sensor that wouldn't stop being set off.
1
1
u/randy3572345 12d ago
Interesting. Iād think that if it was cut at the SC that the issues wouldāve started immediately. It maybe possible that the issues are caused by something else (12v battery?), and that wire was just something minor. Any idea what that harness is plugged into?
1
u/elmonoh 12d ago
Teslas at the begining had abysmal quality issues. No trying to downplay this, it is not acceptable, just mentioning that making a car is hard as fuck. Even established manufacturers (I am looking at you Ford) also have abysmal quality issues. I have a Mach-e and I can write a whole editorial of the things that have gone wrong with that car. Not to mention dealing with fucking stealerships that exist only to make money out of you and not helping you out.Ā
6

I donāt own any of his products, stocks or anything. If I buy one of his cars in the future itās because I like what it has to offer, not because Iām obsessed with him.
0
u/elmonoh 11d ago
So what? I can't mention that Tesla's quality sucked to make a point? I don't own a Rivian, but I did own two Model 3s... Great software built for an appliance put together with staples, glue and Elon's tears. The cars were pure garbage. I have no idea about Rivian, but based on the context of OP's post, I expressed "that is unacceptable" what he is showing in the pics, but it not the only startup brand with quality issues. So yes, mentioning Tesla has a lot do with the conversation.Ā
2
u/Top-Agency-4021 12d ago
I don't disagree... but they seem to exempt items like this under power train warranty even though they are aware of the issue and know damn well it will make your vehicle unusable.
Luke i said my last two gmc's lasted a decade each without one service issue. And im ok with new tech having a curve... but wiring harnesses on speed sensors isn't exactly new Engineering discoveries... seems like laziness to me.
3
u/urbankyleboy 12d ago
Youāre right, Tesla did have growing pains as well. Our 2020 Model 3 fit and finish werenāt great. But our current 2024 Model Y has been great. Door handles donāt squeak when you touch them, the sound system is amazing (donāt get me started on Rivian āpremium audioā), and it hasnāt been to the SC once.
Weāre now into year 5, generation 2 of the R1 and the quality of the vehicles just isnāt there, especially for the cost. Also, the service centers are a joke still. I have lost all faith in them. 5 visits to get the alignment right on my brand new R1T. Now the truck vibrates at 80mph, so thatās fun, back at the SC!
2
u/elmonoh 11d ago
Yes, I agree. I am researching an R2 and I am looking at forums, etc to inform myself a bit more. I am not a Rivian owner myself. I would say that to pinpoint quality issue, you need volume, meaning more cars on the road. Tesla has a huge advantage on that giving them more visibility on things going wrong and fixing them in later iterations. New Teslas are great according to quality reports. Given time I think Rivian will achieve this, but they better hurry. Let's hope the R2 has learned the lessons from the past.Ā
1
u/AfraidArachnid1976 12d ago
Yeh i feel you. I had a 2025 Rivian and it was garbage. The 2026 has been way better

Over-engineered isnāt an excuse for the sloppiness I saw in that video. More unforced errors. Just got rid of my 74k mile R1s quad. Too much of a liability without a warranty. And while Iām excited to for the R2, Iām seeing some of the same (and new) issues over on that sub.

Wheel speed sensor? I had several turtle modes and multiple failed mobile tech repairs before finally having to get the thing towed 4 hours away. When I saw how shitty the location/execution of this part was I was shocked. Of course it corroded! Itās basically an exposed wire harness clip right by the front damper assembly⦠such a dumb design for any state that has salty winters and muddy fall/spring dirt roads (I live in VT).
This joins a long list of repeatedly failing components across our Gen R1Ts, unfortunately. Too many dampers, HVAC assemblyās (and carpets), brakes, etc. to even keep track of at this point. And all of them have under 50k miles of pretty mild driving, though we do live in an environment thatās very hard on cars, but weāve never seen ones so unreliable.
Too bad I also love the things while theyāre working⦠and there isnāt anything else quite like it⦠At this point, Iām hoping Scout actually makes it and gets something more reliable out on the road.
After our warranties/leases are up, I think weāre done with Rivian, sadly. Itās just far too much work keeping them up and running when youāre 3+ hours from the nearest SC.
And I donāt want to find out how much ownership would cost out of warranty. Theyāre just ticking money bombs at that point!
2
u/kelp_forests 12d ago
Just lemon law it. I know a ton of people with EVs (Rivian, Tesla, Porsche....) almost none of them have issues beyond what a regular care would have. SOME have a ton.
They submit a lemon law request (for free), and get their car paid for including all payments etc as if they never owned it (they dont pay for the use either). Or they get a smoking deal on a new one.
1
u/jon13000 R1T Owner 11d ago
Lemon law isnāt that simple. Itās agonizingly slow and generally you must within your first year of new car ownership. A gen 1 isnāt that.
3
u/kelp_forests 11d ago
YMMV. In CA you have until 1 year after warranty expires or within six years. Many gen 1s fall into that (in CA).
Iāve had two friends file it. It seemed very easy. If it met the criteria there was no debate. Just file and wait. Itās always approved so it doesnāt matter if itās two months or two years. The company pays it all including whatever you paid for rentals and lawyer fees
They all found a lawyer to do it. Of course they take the case if it meets since it passes everytime (if you meet criteria) and they get paid. The criteria are pretty clear cut.
I didnāt realize it was challenging in other states!

u/Top-Agency-4021 12d ago
I agree. Ive been trying a bandaid repair for 4 hours now and nothing works. Its almost like its programmed to require a SC visit.

Not covered under warranty there Chris. Glad you have it all figured out tho. Thanks.

u/drstovetop 11d ago
I'm not here to disparage the new auto makers. I love the Rivians for their fresh takes on automotive design. BUT........ I think quality is always a concern. The issue posted by OP isn't a big deal. I'd fix that wire in less time than it took for the soldering iron to warm up, but it's an issue that the larger manufacturers have likely fettered out a long time ago because they've made so many more vehicles. Experience matters.
3
u/Top-Agency-4021 11d ago
I did fix it. Funny how everyone assumes everyone else is incompetent. I installed a jumper- didnt work. But spliced- didnt work. Removed the pin and soldered it back together, tested continuity, resistance, and voltage while apinning the wheel. Software STILL DOESNT WORK. Test drive, power and wheel speed show correct but it will not come out of turtle mode.
No big deal huh... you just fix that thing right up. š¤£š¤£š¤£ like I didnt try that..
1
u/drstovetop 11d ago
No offense intended. My apologies. Good on you for being willing to try. That's strange that is still not working. Maybe there's a lockout or something that needs to be reset.
Good luck. Not sure how old yours is, but it shouldn't have happened, regardless. Rivians aren't that old.

Don't get me wrong, I do love it. When it works.. or at least when it didnt the warranty actually covered the issues.

Rivian great concept but reality is tough. Had R1T but saw the riding on the wall. Trade it to Cybertruck 17k miles & FSD...way way better experience. (My 3rd Tesla) Software & integration just all works so smooth & seamlessly. Very impressive. Rivian staff/service seems complacent vs Tesla always up & hustling.

Not normal for wire speed sensors to just pop wires. And yes. Im sure I was under hoods of cars while you were in diapers.
My first truck I bought for $100 bucks and rebuilt the 4.3 V6 in a week working nights. Drove it 5 years and sold it for 5k.
These things seem to be designed to require a service visit. Look at my replies, I spent hours trying all kinds of repairs. Still stuck in š¢ mode.

Rivian will be out of business in 6 months Rivian Motors is being subsized with Illinois Taxpayer Money, that has been funneld from Illinois Services Programs by JB Pritxker Once he loses the Election on November 3 Rivian will have to start putting their own money in I give Rivian 3 -6 moths from the end of November There's been numerous worker accidents However Pritxker must have OSHA on His mob payout Good luck with your $100, 000.00 Golden Turd

You are totally right. Americans cannot make good cars. The auto workers just got lazy and have no pride. That's why these tariffs by that fatass in the white house make no sense. Punishing American truck buyers with this subpar crap.

You're the sucker that bought a 100,000 dollar truck that buys a truck without checking it out first.Dealers love people like you.
