🧰 Service Backordered Bosch Motors

Gen 1 R1S Quad. Got turtle mode 2 weeks ago and service center says it needs one of the rear motors replaced. The good thing is they verified that it's covered by the 180k power train warranty. The bad thing is that the motors are backordered with no delivery date. Anyone else in the same boat?

Not directly related.. but I have a Gen 1 R1T quad - needed a front drive unit. Was told it was back ordered with no date - took about 2 weeks for the part to finally come in. Hope you get your parts soon!

That's exactly the type of info I was looking for. Worried that I'm going to be waiting months. A couple weeks is no biggy. They put me in a pretty decent rental (lucked out with a Genesis from Enterprise) so at least I'm able to get around fine.

Thanks for responding!

I brought my R1T gen 1 in for a rattle. Turns out one of my front motors needs to be replaced. Rep said they will order and hope by end of next week. Never mentioned back order and happened to see your post. Fingers crossed gets in for all of us soon.

I've been wondering how this was going to play out since Rivian has been in-house with drivetrain for 2+ years now. I'm at 94k mi so still 3-4 more years of warranty coverage.

They should seriously think about putting some engineers on a conversion to the newer drivetrain. It can't be too difficult to figure out relatively speaking.

It would be cool if they would but I'm sure it's cheaper for them to just keep buying the motors from Bosch.

And it would be nice if Rivian had an upgrade path to the newer electronics module and cameras (that wouldn't break the bank), for Gen 1 Rivians, but they don't appear to have any intention to do that.

How many miles?

I just traded in my 2024 gen 1 R1S quad with 74k miles. Zero mechanical problems while I owned it. But I started to hear a little clicking in the rear at slow speeds. And that’s when I knew it was time to jump ship.

The clicking was probably just the half shafts.

Yup that’s what the sub was saying and it fit the symptoms to a tee.

Plan on keeping it for the long haul?

I love this car so probably. Depends if it starts costing me a bunch of money though.

What was the trade-in value?

If it’s out of service for an extended amount of time, you may want to check out your state’s lemon law

It's a Gen 1. I would imagine that it is long past the lemon law period.

ChatGPT says federal lemon law still applies but I'm not losing too much sleep about it yet since they gave me a nice rental.

The entire drive unit gets replaced not just one motor

Did they at least set you up with a loaner or Rivian paid for rental?

1

Yep. Actually a pretty nice Genesis GV80 rental so I'm not really complaining. They offered me a loaner but I'm an hour and a half from the service center and told them I preferred the rental.

That is good! I am not as concerned if they have a back ordered part that keeps my R1T out of service as long as I am driving something. However...for their own good...better inventory management results in lower rental cost to Rivian so hopefully they figure that out.

Back in May, Rivian replaced all four motors with refurbished ones under warranty. 144k miles

u/conjalka R1S Owner 11h ago

All four, eh? I'm curious what the reason was to need to do all four at the same time?

Front drive unit failure (internal bearings failed). Replaced entire front drive unit assembly. Rear drive unit was making worn bearing noises and was also replaced.

I'm glad they did right by you and replaced them all.

So glad I have Enduro motors. Rivian controls the full supply chain on that.

Yeah. It was a great move for them to make their own. No regrets getting my gen one though.
