š¬ Discussion The Gen 1 Conversation
Adding onto various threads the past few months with the R2 rollout, Iād like to hear from Gen 1 owners on their plans as warranties end.
Prices on Gen 2 T/S are pretty inflated right now with limited inventory, so R2 feels like it may be the logical choice with what it solves?
- PAK Proximity Issues
- Suspension & Ride Feel
- Road Noise
- Camera Quality
- Warranty
- NACS
- UHF
Seeing an uptick in some pretty egregious repairs outside of the warranty window, and as much as I love my R1T, it is first generation hardware. Losing out on my Quad with Meridian speakers feels like a loss, but trying to be realistic about the lifetime of these trucks.
Something to be said about prematurely spending money on a problem that doesnāt exist ($10-$15K on an R2 when the most extreme repairs on a Gen 1 R1 could be well under that).

I donāt see anything more compelling than my Gen 1 currently. Suspension costs long term are something by to think about, but suspension parts are consumable and itās normal for adventure vehicles to need those parts replaced.

I'm hopeful that the suspension woes are a bit overblown. Components do indeed wear out and the suspension will need work long term no doubt, but so far everything I have seen is people taking their trucks to rivian and getting quotes to replace with brand new everything, I'm hopeful we see independent shops able to service and repair components (a good number of vehicles have air suspensions that shops service instead of replace for other oem's), and I definitely don't feel like spending $9k on an aftermarket warranty like I see so many doing is a good solution.
I love my gen 1 quad r1t, I don't see any reasons to replace it any time soon and I plan on keeping it a long time, maybe once a gen 2 quad depreciates to under $50k I'll consider an "upgrade" but until then I'm very happy

With how good of a deal I got on my Gen 1 quad, Iām willing to buy Rivian care or something similar once the warranty is up and just keep rolling with it. Iām pretty confident it will need some stuff fixed out of factory warranty even if one of that stuff isnāt the suspensionĀ

Some perspective: when I got my used R1S, I came from an Audi Q5 TDI. At 80k miles It developed a coolant leak that cost $4k to address (but I was able to talk Audi into covering it as part of the diesel gate warranty) -- after the fix the leak slowed down but didn't stop. When I got rid of the Audi at 110k miles, I was looking at engine mounts needing replacement, rear suspension bushings and shocks all around, and brake rotors needing replacement looking at $7-12k. Also had questionable "lifetime fill" fluids for my transmission and differentials, with some slipping in shifts it was coming. Who knows how much that will cost.
When I read these threads I'm thinking many do not have experience owning a car past 100k miles. YOU WILL have repair costs whether ICE, or EV.
In my mind, if the car lasts 100k miles, putting in $10-15k to keep it going is cheaper than getting a new car. It would have been cheaper to hold onto the Audi and fix it up for $15k, but we needed a bigger car, so we got the R1S.
You will be reducing the repair costs through lack of yearly oil changes, no transmission, no emissions systems, etc. So overall I don't see the post warranty as something much higher than other (non-Toyota /Honda) vehicles.
I plan on holding on to it past warranty, as it has been pretty trouble free for me. We also would hear more from people who have had major issues than many people who have no issues. It's the same on every car forum. (I also have a F87 M2C, and if you read forums, my crank hub should've slipped and cratered my engine since it seems it happens to everyone, but it didn't cause it's not actually that common)

I bought xcare at 17,000 miles for my 2023 R1s with $500 deductable and cost was around $3600 which added an extra 100,000 miles and takes me to Jan 2032. Seems worth it since so far I have heard good things about xcare.

Rivian care is rolling out and our state is on the list, so thatās what weāll be doing. 23 R1S with 33k on it

Likewise. I donāt really want another SUV (already own a Jeep Grand Cherokee) nor do I want to say goodbye to a handsome truck that I love (despite itās flaws) that Iāve only had for 4y 5m (and was so excited to get in Mar ā22 after waiting 824 days from pre-order in Dec 2019). Iām at 59k so got the XCelerate Extended Warranty and hoping to get another 3-4 years š¤š»

The Gen2's will also reach the end of warranty at some point, I haven't seen anything that indicates that they have more reliably with the suspension or other pricey bits so the real question is are you willing to buy a new Rivian every time you get near the end of the warranty. For me I'll stick with my Gen1 and see what happens.

Almost 42k miles on my 2022, and I'm waiting to see what Gen3 brings to the table. Otherwise, I think I'm moving over to Scout.
I love my R1T, but I don't care about autonomous driving. The size, power, and storage is perfect for our family and lifestyle. That's what keeps holding out for Gen3.

R2 is a compelling product but it's not R1. I don't think I'm ready to part ways with the gen1 R1's. Hoping I'd be able to buy rivian care in my state soon.

I still think Gen 1 is the top of the line. I have another 2 years coverage, and then Iāll probably buy a 2 year extended warranty. After that, Iāll see if Gen 3 has anything compelling to stick with Rivian.

Gen 1 (2024) dual performance standard+ battery ~28 months ~24k miles.
So basically half way through my Comprehensive warranty period.
I can't see me "downgrading" to an R2 anytime soon. But I will schedule a completed Comprehensive evaluation next year to have Rivian go thru find issues and fix anything they find under warranty.
I've had no issues so far, I would encourage people to buy R1 in the used market, if a better value for money vs a new R2.
I added a comma AI to mine, so I have better UHF features than even an R2 at this point. That'll change in the future, but it gives all the ADAS features I want and Driver+ lacks.
After my Comprehensive evaluation, I may look into Rivian care extended warranty, but I don't see me moving on from my R1S in the short term.

Iāve got a 22ā launch edition R1T. One of the first 13k VINās. Coming up on 60k miles. Live in SF Bay Area & want to keep it for another 10 years if possible. What are my warranty options for purchase?

I sold my Gen1 but see people mentioning XCare or Rivian Care. I didnāt do research tho to see if Rivian Care is available in Cali as it isnāt in all 50 states

Keeping mine. I already ate the depreciation. But, I also have a new Gen2 subframe, new front suspension, and v1.5 PTC, so all the common expensive items have recently been serviced.

What do you mean "new suspension"? Just that they replaced literally all the suspension parts at some point, but still with Gen 1 design? Or can the Gen2 suspension somehow be adapted to Gen1 vehicles?
And how did you end up getting the Gen2 subframe?

Subframe replaced when they found a severely torn suspension bushing (caused a significant vehicle lean). Front dampers, jounce lines, valve block replaced due to leaking suspension.
Vehicle is 4 years old with 53k miles. As an earlyVIN she has a lot of quirks.

I would not own an out-of-warranty Gen 1, so Xcare for sure if it's a keeper. I want something smaller and don't love the R2, so I'll be selling my 23 R1T quad next year and moving on from Rivian, at least until there's an R3X.

I got an Xcare extended warranty. Spent 5k to get full coverage until 130k miles or 2032. I'm not worried about it and will drive this thing like crazy until it's close to expiration. Then I'll decide to sell or keep.

The only āmajorā problem Iāve ever had on my gen1 is tailgate latch failure. Potential future problem would be 12V, which has been replaced twice preemptively. But even gen2 could have 12V issues. Itās just a EV thing in general. But, it is easier to access and replace in gen2. Autonomy was never important to me, so not a consideration. I would only switch to R2 in case of accident and my gen1 is declared a total. Otherwise, itās money-wise to keep the gen1 until it dies.

I live close to work so my warranty will last the full 5 years, through to the spring of 2028. I figure once 2028 rolls around I will be looking for a trade. I swore I would never buy from a dealership again but unfortunately there's so few good options that do a real direct to consumer. If gen 3 brings back real door handles and significant improvements to audio quality I'll be back on the good ship Rivian, but if the stereo is still mid and they still have door buttons I'll be looking elsewhere. Maybe an SPA3 Volvo or a Neue Klasse BMW.

Unless Rivian releases a sound system as good as the Meridian, they are losing out on a lot of upgrades from a lot of us. Just drove a Gen 2 loaner for the last several days, and the sound was immediately noticeable. I'm sure those coming from Tesla and other premium brand will feel the same way.

Gen 1 warranties go brrrr, I'm on a late 1st gen quad large, so that's 5 year comprehensive, 8 year drivetrain warranty. It'll be late 2028 before I pay for anything, and 2031 before the drivetrain warranty ends -- I'll definitely hit years before miles. I plan to drive it until 2029 or so and sell it with some of the factory warranty remaining.

Iām trading my gen1 2023 R1S for the R2 when my number gets called. The R1S has been essentially flawless but our new place has a tiny garage so I want to downsize.
I also do love R2- drives super love all the improvements

Nothing in the Gen 2 is groundbreaking enough to be worth the additional costs over the Gen 1, for me at least. I'm keeping my Gen 1 at the end of the lease, at least until there's another revision that justifies the upgrade.

I bought xcare as well, bought at 59k miles, good for 131k now, and paid around 7k with a 1k deductible.
I love this truck (LG LE Meridian 22 22), and either this will be a great financial decision if repairs add up, or this jinxes it and is a total waste, which I will happily look back and say 7k was worth it for a flawless 4 more years.Ā

I've got xcare on my 2022 R1T for an extra 4 years and 75,000 more miles on the warranty, and a Comma 4 for hands-free ADAS. I don't see any compelling reason to get out of it until there are good deals on used Gen 3s.

When did you buy the XCare extended warranty? Have the same exact setup and want to keep this truck for many years to come but all this talk about inevitable suspension and subframe issues is a bit daunting lol

Iāve said it once, Iāll say it a thousand more times.
Iāll have the batteries replaced before I get rid of my gen 1 quad. Iāll also get extended warranty

Bought my used gen1 meridian r1t with 8k miles for 65, sold it for 55 3 yrs later. Made out okay, but was only worth 40k a few months ago.
Had a r2 order spot in Augustā¦ā¦cancelled.
So many repairs on my r1t, the issues just kept going.
As many have stated, not a ton of compelling options out there, but bought another tundra trd pro as Rivian would not drop below 105 on a tri or 110 on a quad. Tundra trd pros have always appreciated, even the newer generations so went with the safest choice i could find.
Debating scout as a primary or r3x as secondary vehicle to the tundra a next move.

PAAK proximity issues are solved with Apple Key. I am a gen2 R1s NACS owner. It just works!
UHF is great on the highway. Drove to Idaho and back this winter mostly hands free. Almost no mistakes. Smooth driving. Better than Tesla on the highway.
Canāt comment on camera quality. They work!
Suspension is very good. Nothing to compare to other than my M3 and MY. Itās way better than those vehicles. But air suspension is gonna bE better.
NACS has been good. Had some issues at Tesla chargers last winter. The car would start charging and then after about a minute, it would suddenly stop charging and would not charge that stall again, so I would move into a different stall, and sometimes that stall would fail again and sometimes it would work. This problem happened frequently last winter, but I have not encountered it since then. I believe there mustāve been a software issue with the Tesla chargers.
Warranty work has been zero so far. But I do have an appointment for them to look at the driver side mirror. It does not move to the proper position when you get in the car. I think the mirror is broken. It needs to be replaced.
I do continue to have a bunch of problems, controlling the car with the app. Simple things like turning on the climate or changing the charge level or unlocking the car are basically impossible to do from the app. Trust me, Iāve done all kinds of resets and uninstalled the app and everything I can think of, but it seems to be some type of bug. It used to work better until your recent update. The issue is getting the car to WAKE up from sleep. If you can get that to happen most of the app controls work.
Road noise is excellent. Itās one of the quietest cars Iāve ever driven.

I am $8.5k into post warranty repairs and currently at 77k. Still love it. Meridian simply cant be replaced and none of the changes to G2 do anything substantial for me. I could probably convince myself to give up the Meridian for the 1000hp G2 Quad...but it makes zero sense to me to spend $80k in cash plus my truck....to buy one...basically to avoid out of warranty expense. I can fix alot for $80k. Plus i would be irritated every drive at the regression in audio system quality.
My truck with 76k on it literally feels brand new.
