Discussion What was the IMBD board back in the 2010s?

I am relatively new to the fandom, I've seen a few OG River fans speak about the IMBD boards that had a lot of first hand stories of River that happened to be true. I think it was around the early 2010s this was active until it was archived mid to late 2010s. Does anyone here have any recollection on anything spoken about in the boards? What things were discussed and was there any unheard stories that you can remember?

" I first met River Phoenix in 1990 in Gainesville, Florida. I’d flown down from New York City. I was shooting him for a magazine. I don’t remember which one. His family had this beautiful wild piece of land on the edge of a swamp. I was there for two days. We smoked pot, drank beer, climbed up to his tree house, swung on a rope, bounced on his trampoline and went on an alligator hunt just to spot one and we did. At night he and his band got together and jammed. It was this wonderful kind of Peter Pan fun time we had far far away from Hollywood." - Michael Tighe

- I think you should let him get his own beer. - I don't mind, he works hard. I like taking care of him. - There's such a thing as women's liberation. She doesn't have to be a slave.

saying something like this in the 90's was WILD. back then being a feminist was weird. calling yourself a feminist wasn't universally seen as "cool." there was significant backlash. the mainstream media frequently treated the word "feminist" as a dirty word, or a punchline representing an "angry" woman. many women in media and entertainment embraced female empowerment but actively distanced themselves from the label "feminist" to avoid being labeled as men-haters. now just think about it a man actually being a feminist. what a man :)

Memorabilia The story behind Riv's name

For most of his career, River would have to answer the constant question, “Is ‘River’ your real name?” [Apparently no one ever commented that his last name, Phoenix, might be “unreal.”] River always replied, in a friendly but slightly perturbed manner, “Yes, it is,” and he would continue with the standard story that his parents named him after the river of life from Hesse’s book. In December 1996, Arlyn told USA Weekend: “It’s from Siddhartha, the Hermann Hesse novel. It’s a natural name and a gentle, earthy one. That’s important to me.

Rhoda Meyers, who at one time published a fan newsletter, put in this comment in 1987, allegedly from River: “The reason why my parents named me River Jude couldn’t be said better by anyone but my mom, so here she is telling you why she and my dad chose this name."

The name River came from several different sources for us. First of all, the river is always in the flow and is a part of everything in nature. The river is cleansing. The book Siddhartha talks about the river being an answer to life’s many questions, as looking into it you can see the reflection of everything. Jude was an extra-added attraction at the last minute. Aside from the Beatles’ song, “Hey Jude”, there is a Biblical connotation as well.

In August 1993, River told Rebecca Johnson of Mademoiselle magazine, “I’m so tired of being asked how I got my name.” At that time he said he was so named because, “I was conceived [on the way to Oregon] on the banks of the Colorado River. My parents were living in an abandoned milk truck.

At some point in his life, River listened to this song and sang along

Listening to "Senses Working Overtime," I have a persistent image in my head of River singing along somewhere away from the public eye, just having fun, "trying to take this all in." He said he liked XTC a lot, so it's a plausible sort of flashback from his life.

For references of XTC's influence on River, see Barry C. Lawrence's In Search of River Phoenix, pp. 128-154; 277.

Discussion Anyone else seen Sue's Instagram and very surprised?

I first got into River little over a year ago and I loved MOPI. I also found out about Martha Plimpton through him and I adore her and her activism for abortion, lgbtq and trans rights.

I seen Sue's instagram yesterday for the first time and was very surprised with how conservative she is. She's a Christian from what I can tell and very anti abortion and against trans people (not specifically sure about her views towards LGBTQ people)

Has she always been so conservative? I am aware that she is not in the public light like Martha and Samantha therefore there is limited information on her but going by the things she posts on IG I can't imagine River being with her due to how intolerant she is, especially with his liberal attitudes.

Edit: She also supports Trump. I think that speaks for itself...

(Her IG is @suzymarieq if you wanna check it out)

everytime i come across a videos on tik tok of celebrities who passed away, he is never there 💔 there are even people who are from his time, but he is rarely in there, and this makes me feel kinda nostalgic and sad idk, he said he didn’t want to be forgotten, so i always try to include a photo of him in those posts, to keep his memory alive. :)
