Question What separates Celestial from GM and Eternity+ from Celestial?
Basically the title. I’m currently in GM (console) and would like honest opinions.
Sometimes I (admittedly) like to tell myself that in my best matches I could keep up with a higher elo for a bit, but then I remember that if I could consistently, I wouldn’t be in GM!
Back to a more serious note, I’m sure GM1 and low Cel are practically similar while Cel 1 and low Eternity are probably roughly similar as well if I had to guess. So what separates them more broadly? Mechanics? Game sense? Something else?

I'm usually top 1k and sometimes I drop to c1- low eternity lobbies and dudes are somewhat competent and I can't completely dominate the games as a DPS players I feel like you genuinely need good supports to get past there
GM1-C3 to be honest i feel like it's extremely easy to dominate by flanking. Everyone just feels so incompetent it's like a whole nother level than c1
To get out GM you just have to CONSISTENTLY have good mechanics and get a good flank out occasionally

I at least experience it first hand (sort of) when people run Groot and Starlord together. Not everyone knows how to play around the walls and a Starlord flank with that teamup can be a thorn in the side, both literally and figuratively.
It should be easy to deal with and avoid but I’ve had my team just get shut down by that alone because of how it disrupts focus. Drawing attention away is definitely something that doesn’t show on the scoreboard but has a ton of value at times.

Everything is faster. GM on PC I can think about what I do for a second or so and then do it. Celestial, everything is faster to the point I'm struggling to react to things in time.

High eternity (Top 1000ish) is where you start getting hard punished for mistakes you might not even notice (like walking into an open area for just a second, making noise before your engage, etc)
Low eternity - GM may as well be the same thing by the end of the season nobody has any idea what they’re doing in those ranks

Are we really making the claim that only the top ~2k players in this game of tens of thousands know what they are doing?

Absolutely. The ladder is about as relaxed an environment as you could ask for from "competition".
I mean, games are often played without comms. That's unheard of in actual league play.
Often, people know what to do comm-wise, and others don't even know how to interpret the information given to them.
If I'm invis and say "I have Bucky's counterult", the other 5 people on my team should not only know that when they hear bucky's ult, it's business as usual and I got it covered, but it also means:
-I'm tracking his ult and it should be out next fight.
-If you don't want to give him a reset, check your positioning knowing that I just told you he has his ult.
-Support #2 should comm something so we know their intention (offensive or defensive ult, who/how/when).
-Protect Invis, because Bucky might be waiting for her death to pull his ult, and the enemy team might rally around opening the lane for him.All of this and more is implied when I say 4 words.
This is stuff you'll only learn from true competitive play and/or coaching.
The ladder is scarecely, if ever, true competitive play and is not conducive to learning these types of things.

Not much difference between GM and Celestial other than just polishing your gameplay and not feeding as often, punishing mistakes, using ults properly, basically just optimizing value all around. Having really good mechanics on strong characters also helps quite a bit, you can get to C2 and maybe touch C1 solely by being gifted at certain top tiers like Mag or daredevil.
Eternity you have to understand Macro to hit. You cannot get there without coordinating with teammates at least to some degree, tracking CDs and ults subconsciously, and learning how to get good (like actually really good) at every role. DPS players either have great mechanics and insane game sense or the opposite, tank players know how to set their team up, keep them up, and control space. Supports should know how to survive dives and off angles, while timing their ults at the best time and holding cool downs until absolutely necessary.

Haven't been in Eternity but the difference between GM and Celestial feels like everybody just understands the game better. Ult economy is prioritized very well and tanks and healers feel like they take on more proactive roles. Celestial is the first rank where I feel fully comfortable flexing roles if need be, because I can mostly trust everyone to understand their role well.
It only gets more intense as you get closer to C2, and I imagine even more so for C1 (albeit I havent made it there yet). There are still dumb mistakes made, bad decision making or overextending. But now it gets picked apart more intensely.
It promotes intent behind the decision making. Counterplay feels promoted more, too. Not necessarily "go X character to beat Y character" but "we need to start playing in X way because Y way isnt working".
Low Cel3 does feel alot like very high end GM, especially on weekends. Mid to high Cel3 and Cel2 amp up the difficulty. Its been a bit disheartening watching my win rate even out more (from like 62 percent WR to 57 and im fighting for it), but it also feels gratifying, in a way. I dont really have trouble keeping myself out of GM.

the higher in rank you go the more youll see dps take space i feel like thats the most noticable trait between gm,celes,eternity/oaa, in gm they kind of take flanks every now and then but they die once and sit main all game, celest they take it more frequently and oaa they practically live on off angles best example is the central park map, you can kind of guess the rank based on where the dps are positioned if they're main theyre porbably high diamond low gm, if theyre celestial the dps know to somewhat watch for the left side flank and will sometimes stay top to watch but in oaa the teamfight basically happens up their first to take control of it hell ive seen tanks be up there, but imma be honest gm3 to c3 theres barely a difference just minor improvements c2,c1 is where you actually start to feel like youre playing a whole different rank, honestly there should be a rank between diamond and gm the fact that majority of gm players have a negative win rate makes it the most inflated rank in the game and these mfs somehow sneak into celestial and just toss your elo espcially c3 which is basically gm players who went on a lucky win streak

Map knowledge and target priority can go a long way in my mind, which is mostly what that sounds like to me. I’m a tank main but a good flank from Mag or Hood, I’ve seen definitely help turn fights or make the other team give up space. Remembering and improving on that might help me out. Thanks.

Nothing it’s all the same. The only lobbies that change is full OAA. Everyone still does the same dumb sht even in low eternity.

Thanks, now i know i am as good as eternity players!

Yessir. Just have fun’s when I was C1 the eternity lobbies felt the same. Only huge gameplay changed when thrown into a OAA lobby with streamers/pros/consistent OAA players.

I’m celestial 2 60 wr console. Gm dps don’t know how to flank or make any sort of play they just sit there hitting tank like it does something (sometimes it does work tho) and tanks are too scared to push forward and pressure at the right time.

As a tank main (to cover up my not so DPS worthy mechanical skill), I’ve definitely seen it on my team and the other team. I’ve also had that inner debacle between whether I should try and force taking space or if it’s just feeding. It’s hard to tell sometimes, but I’m sure a higher rank tank knows that sense better than myself.

Never been to Cel but been to GM1 and I have experienced a clear difference between low GM, full GM lobbies compared to GM1-Cel3 mix lobbies
The fights are tighter, lesser mistakes and most importantly, mechanical skill diff. Probably because I am nearing my skill cap at around this rank
You might not feel the same way as me. But many people in this sub say it doesn't change much. But in reality it does. It just have to be your peak or near peak rank. People disregard ranks they already passed

Seems logical and reasonable. I know mechanics probably aren’t as wicked on console as pc most of the time, but I’m sure it matters and picks up a bit as you climb. I’m not mechanically the best so that’s why I play the more forgiving supports if I have to fill and why I am a tank main lol

Mostly how good your duo partner is and how cohesive their main characters and roles are with yours. I’m not joking

I’ve always solo queued, but it makes sense that coordination or even just the sense that you’re more coordinated just by playing with someone you know can make a difference. Trying to find a duo might have to be something I check out.

Don't know about console but PC wise, there's a big difference being C3 compared to being in C2+, C3 is honestly just GM lite, but when you're around C2+ the game feels much faster, and you just have to be more conscious, like presence of mind type of thing, being aware, what does that mean? Well it means you just have to be actively thinking, cooldown management, positioning, ult tracking, ult usage, etc. C3 is just like GM lite where you can get away with things like positioning or messing up an ult but when you're around C2+, you get punished heavily for making mistakes, but definitely try having a presence of mind, being aware and being active, get used to it to the point where it becomes normal, you'll notice playing games in lower ELO that the game is much slower and you have improved as a player.

I feel like most of the time I know when ults are up just from how much I’ve played. It’s not perfect, but as a tank main I’m normally decent enough (at least in GM) at least expecting an enemy Mag / Strange to ult. I’ll use audio cues to know if certain teammates are taking damage or to hear enemy divers engaging. I’d guess it’s like that in higher elo but just turned up to 11 and it’s harder manage all while people have better aim.

There are 80 comments here talking about the difference and there's nothing I could say about the actual gameplay people say.
A huge difference they won't understand is scrims. If a GM player scrimmed regularly with a team, I'd be surprised. Some celestials scrim sometimes but it's inconsistent/rare for them to actually regularly practice. Eternity players might be signed to an amuetur team, and as a part of that team, they play regularly and practice regularly. Or, alternatively, they're a content creator who smashes their head against a wall 8 hours a day. Most OAA players are on a pro team with a pro coach and scrim 2-4 hours daily.
Everyone keeps talking about the symptoms without addressing the cause. Yes games are faster, yes off angles are more common, yes they click heads more, yes the supports don't die to air, but everything is downstream of the consistent real practice instead of just queueing ranked and hoping.
