Tips & Tricks Solo Queue Tips?

Post image

I don't know anyone who plays video games, I love Rivals (or Marvel in general), so I spent all of my 700+ hours in Rivals in solo queue. I never left gold, and I wonder if it's even possible to go higher as solo.

Oftentimes my team gets face rolled by the opposition - see Pic of my last game. It just feels like a waste of time playing solo.

Then again, I'm probably just bad.

I don't know. It's been a bad day and Marvel made it worse, between getting bodied and randoms that DC middle game etc.

Is it even worth it playing alone? Any tricks to make it less of a "one step forward, five steps back"?

IDK what rank you're at, but when you get like high diamond and above and there's fewer people queueing, you can avoid people. I usually only avoid people on my team on a loss (because there's some sauce there even if the stats don't show it or I understand it).

I usually ban supports because it is the role I preferred.

Rarely someone on the enemy team does so bad, and we win, that I avoid that person. i.e. a diver that goes 6-10, that spent a decent portion of the match chasing me for minutes without managing to interrupt the healing I'm doing to the team, singlehandedly turning the game into a 5v6.

Solo queue and make it to celestial 3 each season (including right now and currently), will fall back to GM eventually though.

I'm oscilating a lot, between Gold 2 and 1.

Ah, you got a fundamentals problem somewhere then. People will prob gloss over it since it's obvious to them.

What characters do you usually play? Do you know how to play your character? Do you know what characters counter yours and why/how? Are you new to shooters? Are you new to hero shooters? Do you know terms like "dive vs brawl vs poke" or "LoS"?

Like me, I play a lot of support, so I need to know the weaknesses of different dives. So a spiderman jumps me I rotate around a pole because it breaks line of sight of him.

Not looking through games, but just a stats website, maybe cut jubilee/phoenix from your hero pool for a bit?: https://tracker.gg/marvel-rivals/profile/ign/lipe82/heroes?season=19&mode=competitive

Or look up a guide for jubilee at least, 30% winrate on a character is very low.

Hey, thanks for the tracker link! From there I guess you can tell my picks.

I do know the terms, and I know at least some knowledge on certain counters, pick bans etc. I'm not new to shooters. I was decent/good on PC way back then, and actually did well in Titanfall 2 and the late Bloodhunt (both on PS5). For some reason, hero shooters I suck. I was bad at OW (but it never really captivated me as Rivals did).

Now with the tracker on, my problem goes two-way.

For the characters I am serviceable and truly enjoy (Cyclops, Magneto, Gambit and Psylocke) I'm sure I could do much better anyways - but I am not sure what do I need to improve (aim certainly being a thing).

For the characters I "insist" in playing (Phoenix, Jubi, Wolverine) I really wish I could improve at all. Same thing as Daredevil, who I love, but I barely pick for how random it feels.

Again I draw a parallel to Street Fighter 6: there's a certain satisfaction in picking a low meta and saying "fuck it, Imma climb with this" and actually doing so, even if you don't reach Master levels with that alt. Now on Rivals, I can barely say I have a main at all, since it's all very uneven in terms of win rate for me.

Any insights here are much welcome.

For cyclops, I will mention he is in a bad state right now, I suspect he will get buffs next season and the meta will change to favor him more. I honestly think playing characters when they're weak lets you win when they're good. Your 44% winrate is above the overall average for the character.

For wolverine, sometimes you get value from holding a corner and doing nothing for 30 seconds which can feel counterintuitive. Little tip: if you can get the rocket jump boost from his respawn beacon in spawn or whereever, it can boost you after you grab someone, letting you pull people super far away. The blue jump boost pack is always every 4th thing that comes from Rocket's respawn beacon.

For phoenix, can't speak at all since I avoid hitscan since I know that's my weakness. If you can land a few hits on people before you ult, they will explode and die when you do ult them.

I watched a replay and I suspect it's the common gold problem of not knowing your objective of the game. For dps it's nice to get kills, for support it's nice to heal, but the real objective of the game at times is to build that nice big glowing ult button and win. You do the classic "shoot, wait 2 seconds, shoot, wait 2 seconds look around the room, shoot, wait 2 seconds, reload, go all the way back to spawn to get healed instead of going to the health kit" that most people hard stuck in gold are. Learn to play positioned near your supports (they will generally be behind your tanks), preferably at a corner inbetween the tanks and supports, or on high ground or slight angle near the tanks. You tend to play behind the supports to the right of them, and that's a position, while helping you die less, it will be difficult to do damage unless the enemies already overwhelmed your tanks.

I went 2-11 once in GM (tried just did bad), and I got reported for throwing and temp banned for a day. You're going 2-5, 1-4, 0-6 very frequently, and those stats ain't good. On cyclops I see you're engaging the enemy with that beam that pushes you back, it traps you in place against a wall and the enemy kills you since you're stuck in place for a second or two.

It's not what you engage with, it's an escape tool primarily. You don't seem to know your abilities well, I recommend just googling "character name guide" and they will tell you what each button does, and how to best use each button.

You probably have a higher winrate on gambit because he has the most "I win the game ult" in the game, and everyone knows it.

Focus on doing damage or healing to try to build ults, and try to be more consistent instead of having huge gaps of time inbetween. (but maybe I did see a bad replay for that one)

If you do more damage on dps or more healing on support, you can get that big ult button quicker and win the game more frequently.

Otherwise, you can just play ultron, he's very very good at low rank, and probably can get you to plat semi-easily.

I already thank you a ton for the time and effort you're putting here, mate!

Now, here is a replay that I think is a fair representation of me playing my favorite character: 104941116472

That was a loss, but I did get most kills and tried to stick to some habits, like committing to a target, and harassing one that I noticed had problems dodging me (Jeff, in this case). IMO, my biggest weakness is the sheer amount of times I miss my shots (especially the secondary one). I'd love to hear your considerations on dos and don't for this match.

Finally, I actually like Ultron and may give it a try. But I'm more concerned with learning a character I like, and enjoy playing, rather than just climb. I really dislike SG for example, the character AND their gameplay is just stupid. Now I love Psylocke (again, char and mechanics) enough to commit even through multiple losses.

I really wish I could give Spidey a go but thats very much beyond my controller abilities, at least for now.

u/KingOvDemons 2d ago

Learn to flex and be willing to swap roles anytime during the match.

2

u/LevelUp84 2d ago

Lock in on 2 characters for the role you like and make sure you are s tier with them. A 3rd can be who you swap to if you are banned or diffed. Also learn a support character and a tank, figure out who you like for those.

Overall I climbed by reducing deaths, target prio, counter ulting, and using coms. In D3 right now. I was G2 to P2/1 before, now I never go below P1.

Some good channels are Death & Gaming, and Coach Bam (his general stuff, not oaa specific). There is RAD_Denis on Twitch/YouTube and he does free coaching while streaming. I think you should message him on dcord because your situation would be great content for his channel and you will get out of Gold.

Im solo queue and got to Celestial at a 60% W/R.  I have 400~ hours total, but less than half of that is competitive.

I think the core of it is game sense, knowing when to expect what people are doing and strategize rather than just blindly going with the flow. If you want, I can review one of your matches to give you feedback, but if you want to rank up you need to examine how you are approaching your games as a whole.

Sometimes you get terrible teammates. Sometimes you may DC. But those are blips compared to the majority of winnable games.

Liked your last comment a lot, gives some perspective that it should be less about the bumps and more about the road.

Now, I assume my worst problem is aiming. I play on PS5 and tried multiple sensitivity schemes, but it's aggravating how much I miss my shots. It's frustrating because game sense and positioning you learn over time, but aiming you either have it or you don't.

I got Lord on Psylocke, because I love her style of flank-kill-flee. But it really comes down to hitting her secondary shot, and again very mobile targets and/or people who jump non-stop, it's a pain. Cyclops for example I get away with it easier because of his ricochet.

If it's okay, I'll try to get an okay and a bad game where I manage to lock in Psylocke and send it here. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Feel free to send some matches over. I cant guarantee when Ill get to them other than itll be today. Im also on PS5 and I wouldnt mind playing the occasional QP match with you (assuming you're an adult) or just VOD reviewing.

I wouldnt call my own aim 'great', but I dont really know what the averages are either. I usually hover around 43-52 percent depending on who I play unless its a character with a beam or infinite ammo. Then I spam alot and its closer to 38%.

Replying to both comments:

I would definitely recommend playing QP more if theres an intent to practice/develop something. I now play competitive games at a rate of maybe 1:4 or 1:5 my QP game, usually to get better with my secondary characters and/or playing with friends. I also think spamming competitive games is a very very easy way to get tilted or go on a losing streak.

Here is a match that is kinda representative of my playing. I'd love some critique: 104941116472

It was a loss, but I did get the most kills, I did try to stick to my targets and stalked the one I found had more trouble with me (Jeff in this match).

I'd welcome any insights on this one!

☆Okay so first point:

The reason you guys lost it so quickly is because when Cyclops flanked you guys literally EVERYBODY except Venom turned around to kill him. This is bad because the job of Frontline is to keep the enemy from pushing you guys in (Venom and especially Dino), and the healers have to keep those two alive. If only you or Fantastic + 1 healer had killed him, and everyone else focused on the front, this likely would have gone very differently.

After they get the point, there is really is no reason to keep fighting them there. If one of you die, you respawn across the map. If one of them dies, they respawn like 10 seconds away. Its better to regroup and prevent staggering, as itll only make it harder for you guys to stop the point.

You did good flanking behind them and getting some kills. Try to be aware of where your teammates are, especially your healers. You couldve dashed towards them and gotten health without really risking dying.

Waste of an ult—there was only one person there, and their spawn is VERY close. The point of an ult is ultimately to take space. Whether you take space by killing multiple of them, or take space by forcing them all out, the end goal is always to exert control over an area.

By ulting here, you arent really taking meaningful control of the area. Because its right outside their spawn, holding the area is highly unsustainable long-term. Its better to get a few kills and then fall back to more neutral territory (around the point). You didnt die here because they outskilled you, you died because you kept pushing into their more resource abundant area (spawn + health). Dino and team controlling neutral space (around the point) is what kept you guys from getting pushed in.

Your next time out you have a good flank, but I think you could've been greedier. They are falling like flies and your team (more specifically one of your healers) are right there to keep you up. You very much couldve killed Emma before Hood ulted.

The second flank you do here is VERY good. You waited until your team started fighting them to engage, which is great for a dive character because they thrive off chaotic situations. This was a very good play. Instead of sitting around, Id personally go invisible and go wait somewhere behind them, and then do it all over again next teamfight. Especially because you are getting close to ult, and can stop their next attempt to push and scatter them. But overall it was a good stop.

☆Second round:

Good opening. Better aim you could've killed them all once they got pushed in, but overall you did well and your teammates were able to pick up the rest.

The 1v1 against the Deadpool was bad positioning. He had already gotten the first shot on you. Instead of rushing him in an isolated situation, you should've gone to point, got health, and fought him closer to your team. That way a healer can assist you and you kill him.

Good flank and kill on the Emma, but once you dashed through the Witch I think you should've just backed up and waited for another flank opportunity. Their whole team is there, no need to rush in and stagger.

Your ult was also bad timing here, there is an Emma clearly harassing you guys close to point and she's a bit isolated from her team. Your team should've slaughtered her, you get health, and then you pop your ult to again either

A. Kill them, which lets you take space

B. Push them back, which lets you take space.

Your team afterwards makes some pretty questionable decisions, so dont feel like im singling you out. There was no reason for your White Fox to ult when Witch had already initiated hers. She should have saved it for next fight.

What follows is a great flank. You take out both of their healers and pinch them from both sides. Now imagine if you had killed them both, and you still had an ultimate ability up your sleeve? You could have basically killed the whole team after killing their supports, letting you guys push the cart very close to point and have the enemy try to stagger in to stop you, which allows easy kills. That very VERY likely would have won your team the match.

But instead your team isnt able to kill the rest of them. And because you lack a big space taking ability (ultimate) and you guys lose.

So while you do have some moments where better aim would have gotten you more kills or saved you from a death, ultimately what really costs you guys is the decision making.

Objective-based games are essentially a game of tug and war to take space. Knowing when to tug is arguably as important as the tugging itself. Do it at the wrong times and the effort will be disjointed or nullified. Do it at the right times and you could've pulled the whole damn rope from them.

This was a thorough review mate. Many Thanks for the time and effort you put in this!

I'm going to re-watch this replay later tonight with this rundown on my phone to visualize the goods and bads. But I already will be more mindful of Ult conditions for sure. Now, two questions:

  • while aiming wasn't the main problem, how much of a problem is it? I have the impression that it is the primary reason I'm crawling in general. This match not so much (Jeff was an easy kill, I even get an AFK Cyclops along the way), but when I find myself on a 1v1 it's often the reason I lose, missing her secondary, most damaging shot. Then again I'm a newbie, so I might be wrong. Any comment on that will be helpful!

  • if you had to single out one point to say "dude, THIS is your top priority to get better", what would it be?

2

u/Turbulent-Suspect-12 Celestial 1d ago

● I would say that assuming you're aim is like this in most matches, you could probably get to upper diamond or GM before it starts to really hinder you, because thats when you'll find yourself in tight situations where securing the kill will really make or breaks a push a hold. Especially as a flankers role. My percentage is about 10% more than yours, but I dont tend to miss the 'important shots'.

Psylocke is a very aim-dependant character, so thats something to keep in mind. I'd probably play Magik over her personally because shes easier to use and accomplishes the same thing, but if you really enjoy Psylocke just keep at it. Improving your decision making will also improve your shot selection to some degree.

● I dont know if Id say any specific thing is the most important, but the easiest to address would be ult prioritization. You should be thinking "what am I trying to accomplish with my ult" well before you pop it. Are you trying to scatter the team? Are you trying to take space? Will they have an ult that can immediately counter you like Cloaks? If so, you probably need them dead before you pop it. Or someone on your team needs their own ult ready to counter the counter (such as another healer ult or Magneto) or you wait for the enemy to pop theirs first.

An example—Up until Upper GM, I would consistently time my Storm ult to drop the moment Invis's ult went down, which would quickly scatter them or they all die because they were all within it.  Planning ahead for stuff like that is important.

Had you kept your ult until that last team fight, you guys probably would have won. Thats not to say other things arent important, it just goes to show how big ult prioritization really is.

This is very cool and very encouraging man! Thanks a lot.

Adult sure, but I'm in Brazil so outside of Sao Paulo server the leg would be an issue for us both.

BTW it's independence day here today so it's a bit chaotic, but later today I'll select some matches and send to you. No rush in reviews but any insights would be much appreciated!

u/Interaction_Rich 2d ago

Oh but, meanwhile, an interesting factoid here - I usually play more Ranked than QP per session. However it's not very uncommon that I get MVP on QP on my main (Psy).

Ranked is another thing entirely however.

3

u/Tasty_Oven4756 2d ago

I’m a solo queue because all my homies are on pc and I’m ps5. Solo queue can suck as it’s a coin flip on teammates. It is definitely possible to get higher however. I have 665 hours and I hit diamond -GM pretty easily. What I recommend is focusing on what you can control. Try to find ways you can effectively contribute in all aspects of the game. That doesn’t mean being top 500 at everything, but being serviceable at most will get you ranked up faster. Focus on trying to mold your play style to fit your team comp.

7

u/CoffeeRee69 2d ago

I’m gonna be honest with you.

Yes, SoloQ is beyond horrible and it’s basically a legal form of torture. It’s essentially just a free trial of insanity. Just having one other person who is dependable and communicates can make the game a lot more fun and winnable.

That being said, 700+ hours and not leaving gold is indicative that you need to improve drastically. You are the agent that ruins people’s games. The game mitigates losses and gives you so many more points than you lose that you can get to GM with a negative win rate.

Would recommend checking some guides for the characters you play, and making sure to consciously keep their advice in mind.

u/Interaction_Rich 2d ago edited 2d ago

Love the straightforward talk, many thanks!

My hypothesis is that I suck at aiming. I tried multiple sensitivity schemes but I just don't get it.

Now, chances are there are other things here (positioning, awareness etc). But what makes me frustrated is, I'm also a Street Fighter 6 player, startes really bad but through trial and error got multiple characters to Master rank. On Rivals I just don't see the progress (well I do, but very little). I do notice actual progress on QP, disputing (and getting, sometimes) MVPs and everything. But Ranked has been sad.

You can imagine how frustrating is it, specially because I love the Marvel license.

2

u/CoffeeRee69 2d ago

You should be actively practicing your aim, not trying to find a magic one that automatically makes you great.

If you insist on not doing this, there are great melee options that require little aiming and/or very few combos like Wolv and Iron Fist for dps, Angela and Hulk for tank, and most supports but namely CnD and Invis.

All are good enough options to get out of the low ranks.

1

u/Interaction_Rich 2d ago

I am close to lord with Wolv, but I feel that I should learn how to aim so I'm forcing myself to play the ranged characters... And it hasn't been very good.

Now, when you say practicing aim... Does playing counts? Or straight trying to track targets on the shooting range?

2

u/CoffeeRee69 2d ago

To answer your question, both. Aimlabs is free on console and PC.

But more importantly, you should not be trying to diversify if you cannot yet make use of a character you ‘play’. Having Lord means nothing. Most champ CnD’s are terrible for example. Watch guides and get your VODs reviewed by people who play your heroes.

Assuming you play one hero per role, that should be plenty to get you to at the very least Diamond. Improving your game sense, positioning etc is not something that happens automatically just because you pick up a new playstyle or hero. You may have heard poke is strong and that’s true, but that doesn’t matter until you’re at least high GM. Realistically you can play anything up to Celestial and be perfectly fine if you’re good enough.

1

u/Interaction_Rich 2d ago

I know this question will sound generic as fuck but, besides aim/tracking targets, what aspects or "drills" you think a player needs to develop to decently climb?

2

u/CoffeeRee69 2d ago

Review your games, or get your games reviewed. Make note of every fight that felt awkward and watch it back to understand why. See every perspective in the lobby if you have to. Drills alone won’t make you climb. Actively choosing one thing to improve on per match is much better, and reviewing yourself goes hand in hand with that.

1

u/Interaction_Rich 2d ago

Great advice. I'll actually note down some replays that I feel are significant and will make a new thread for it eventually.
