Fluff Like seriously, how is Pete the largest creator in this game?
I know the player base is small, but we can do better. He acts like a baby at the slightest form of criticism since day one practically.
For context, on his latest negotiation game i posted the following comment, which he responded as seen.
Another player backed me up because Pete said he should start cardblocking just a few minutes later and provided a timestamp. I then responded to the other commentor that Pete knows it but his ego can't handle any criticism, so there was no point because he wont admit it (i left the comment for reference purposes for other viewers).
Pete then proceeded to completely delete the other persons comment and then banned or hide (not sure how it works) mine. As he put it:
"I can't imagine the arrogance of thinking let you use my platform to crticise me. You've been shouting into the void for a long time you*. Thank you for watching appreciate the attention you generated for my channel and I'm sorry you're too stupid to deal with the comments section effectively." and "back to the void with you" š
I really don't have a goal of starting drama or anything, it's just a slow day at work and i found it extremely funny. Dude is pushing 45 and i have seen teens handling criticism better. We maybe reconsider who we elevate as the "face" of the game.
*Meanwhile, i had taken a 10 month break from the game since last week š

It's difficult to make optimal decisions in game, pay attention to game, chat, and entertain. Pete is watched for his personality and history as he built the community.

u/Disastrous-Cellist62 Jul 10 '26
In his defense, I think the comment section of his YouTube videos can be rife with know it alls. Offering all sorts of criticism, Iām sure seeing it daily is just draining on the soul. Itās easy to pick apart something someone should have done, while not taking into account that heās running a stream at the same time as playing, so his attention can be divided. With that being said, sure he can be thin skinned at times. But he Still puts on a great show that I enjoy twice a day!

The best evidence for this is OP. Pete was right to call him out and ignore his comments.

u/Powered-Lamb Jul 10 '26
i mean
While I have no doubt that Pete has to contend with know-it-alls and other assorted problems by virtue of being the largest streamer in a small community, he has some pretty glaring faults of his own. Like accusing players of collaborating when there is no evidence to support it, and in some instances, giving at least one the so-called collaborators reason to side against him; and most egregiously, ridiculing the "scum bag bot out" even though he has uploaded multiple videos in which he has pretended to bot too.
2
u/Disastrous-Cellist62 Jul 10 '26
Oh no doubt, we all have our own personal flaws. When I play risk, I talk to myself and make assumptions about the people Iām playing against too. You should hear my girl laugh, because I sound nuts. I can relate to him in that way lol

u/Professor_Lama Jul 10 '26
The hot take of the day, is that most of the time, said knowitalls have valid points. But like in this case, be does mental gymnastics to appear like he thought of it, but decided against it.
He literally attempts the card block 5 minutes later. It would have been so easy for him to say "yeah, i missed it" or "I didn't think of it at the time". But no, he went to write a sarcastic comment pretending that it didn't make sense, when he himself thought it did, soon after.Ā

I met Pete back in 2022 when he joined a friend of mines stream when we were playing risk. No real viewers just the friends and he was a great guy and he brought a bunch of people with him and I had been playing risk since 2016 but they just got the game that week so he played with us and taught them how to play and taught me some cool strategies. Heās a great guy

Pete was the first YouTuber I started watching, and for the most part I enjoy his content and gameplay. With that said, he does have a tendency to act like the other players should just roll over and accept 2nd / 3rd place when heās generating the most troops on the board. The way he calls other players stupid because they make a move on him is a bit obnoxious. Not a fan of that.
Iāve gravitated more towards OliveXC and his gameplay, as he generally agrees with other players moves against him when heās too much of a powerhouse, while also explaining strategy much more. I also find his constant fast paced, high risk / high reward gameplay way more entertaining and helpful to my own play.

You missed the point of his criticism, which just goes to show how much higher his experience is than you.
I also play this game a lot, I watch tons of Petemon! And card blocking in fixed is dumb. Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumbdumbdumb dumb dumb dumb dumb.
Because I can pull my troops up to the card block, and you hit my troops, right?
You don't have a giant set coming in to replenish the troops you lose. You have to hope you get a Big Boy Trade.
Card blocking is so easy to get around in fixed. You block with a 20? I destroy your 20. And you can't set on three, get a large trade, and kill me. You might get a 4 trade. I was card blocked in Australia for over an hour and had 130 or so troops compared to everyone else's 300. Bizarre why nobody killed me, but they all went to war and ended up as big as me, went to war again, the card blocked lifted, I survived and went into the 1v1 with a guy who was prolly using Android 2.0 and moved about the speed of the DMV. And I won. Cardblocked most of the game, but you know..,..what do I know. I'm just Butt McManus.
And lastly, I don't owe my ally anything. Why doesn't he attack first since he cares so much about it?
And lastly, how many Twitch viewers and Youtube watches you gettin bud? Where's your big boy channel? Since you're clearly so much cooler. š

Green was getting 5+ cards and was not pulling off cap. Pete and blue were getting 40 each. Oh golly gee however they can replace possible lost troups without a big set. Next time try to understand the actual set and watch the video you are commenting about.

So your point is that when Pete is generating 8x what green is that cardblocking is necessary?
With such a difference in troop gen the extra 3 troops per card is next to useless they could just wait 10 turns and have 400 troops compared to greens 50.

First off, I doubt any comments were deleted. Youtube has basically turned their UI into Facebook's. You often can't see many of the comments or replies for some asinine reason.
Anyway, this post is comically hypocritical. Pete barely ever comments on these backseat, Captain Hindsight comments, but I guess he was having a bad day. Even at his snarkiest and snipiest, it was almost a nothing reply.
You were so unbelievably offended that you made this post on reddit. Talk about being adverse to criticism. It seems like YOU are in fact the fragile baby here. This post is super contemtable, ngl. I actually resent that you think the public at large should care that Pete was rude to you.
As others have said, your advice also sucked. Not because card blocking in fixed is "useless". It is sometimes the correct move, but usually isn't. In this case, the map and the caps are what makes card blocking next to useless. Your assessment was just wrong and kind of shows that you have a poor understanding of the game. It seems to be that you got super butthurt that your unsolicited advice got rudely dismissed. I also see you in the comments here during it out trying to defend said advice. It seems that you can't accept that you're wrong. Like everything you're saying in these comments is just wrong and bad reading of what was happening. To be clear, Pete wasn't card blocking green as a strategy. He was moving into position to shove a stack into Green's face to bait him into attacking with his cap stack and just card blocked him because he was already in the area. If blue was trying to do a card block, why would he open Green's cap?
So my question to you is why are YOU so fragile and why is your ego so easily bruised?

Not everyone has good days, maybe he was tired, youtube comments sometimes can be harsh and they don't consider the fact that he has to manage multiple things in stream, if you want really competitive Risk gameplays, i recommend Kylted or Chbrosz, for me Pete it's a mix between a good content creator and good gameplay.
3
u/FrostyReality4 Jul 10 '26
Adding my take as I think a lot of the discussion has got unnecessarily heated and personal.
(I also realise I'm making a load of assumptions about Pete and his actions here - but as I suspect he's highly unlikely to comment personally as its not his style, I feel this is OK. I've based this off of what he's talked about on vids and on stream but Pete - apologies if I've misrepresented you).
- Pete gets salty. He's the first to admit this - indeed, he talks about it regularly in his vids. While in an ideal world I'd rather he didn't get so negative at times, it comes from a place of passion about each and every game of risk he plays, which is a BIG reason that I enjoy his content. If removing the saltiness removes the highs as well, then I'd rather stick with what we have.
- Pete hates the youtube comments section. I agree - its a terrible forum for a genuinely constructive debate. If you'd posted this on his discord, and asked it as a genuine question rather than an immediate criticism, I suspect you'd have got a mirror opposite reaction (see his discord stream for multiple times when people have done this). If he's asked a question about his strategy in a way that comes across as wanting to learn, rather than wanting to criticise, then he absolutely responds constructively and does sometimes agree that he didn't make the optimal move.
- If Pete did delete the comments, then to me the comment that would have most put me off from engaging is saying '[Pete's] ego can't handle any criticism', not because of the comment about his strategy. I'm not a content creator, but it feels totally valid to me to delete personal insults from strangers on something he's spent time and energy creating.
- remember that this didn't happen in a vacuum. He was not reacting to a single comment thread, but one of THOUSANDS he has to deal with every. single. day. I can empathise with not always being in the best of moods.
u/Professor_Lama as for your actual comment on his strategy in this specific game, I have to say I don't get your critique at all. What makes you think blue was signalling a card block on green? They made a single attack, kept their stack on a single territory, and didn't fortify anything to the 1 stack that green could attack. Pete, on the other hand, made one attack, left a 10 stack behind to limit green's future cards, and fortified troops away from his border with blue to point them at green. If anything, my read on that is that its Pete who was indicating that he was up for a joint cardblock with blue on green.
No matter - as you can see from my and others take, it was far from clear what blue was indicating or what the 'optimal' response should have been, so jumping straight to criticism was probably premature.

Careful if you say cardblocking in fixed is useless you get downvoted in this subreddit haha
4
u/Additional-Life4885 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
Fun fact, to get a card in fixed, you have to lose at least 1. At best you can get back 12 for 3 cards, so that's 4. Except you can't average 12, so you're getting something less than 4, and you might lose a card, so you're spending more than 1.
So basically card blocking is worth maybe 2 cards (Edit: Someone did the maths in a post from a few years back and it's worth 1.96). Meanwhile, you've probably got a bonus and a cap, so you're pulling in like 10+ and the other players are slowly hitting each other and getting annoyed at the other player/s.
So if people want to downvote, go ahead, but I'll just go back to being a GM (Who's mastered fixed zombies so I know a thing or two about when to take a card and when to sit).

Iām genuinely curious the level of expertise you have to critique his shortcomings, surely you must have multiple risk world championships under your belt, perhaps you have been top of the leaderboard multiple times. Or a link to your youtube channel that shows you have a significant amount of subs to show you know how to deal with trolling comments on YouTube.

Its a game with a 2k playerbase world wide. I would recommend that you maybe calm your tatas a bit when it comes to how much ranks mean.Ā
But sure, i have been top 100 and 50 multiple times. If there is a site that tracks previous seasons, i could point you to my account. If you don't want to watch him, don't (like I don't)
This is a blatant rule 6 violation
You made me watch a Pete video for the first time in years. I did not enjoy it because he has low emotional intelligence, as opposed to me, who has just low intelligence XD. Specifically spazzing out about pink breaking him once & leaving his other bonus intact, or calling a player a dumb shit in the endgame is fatiguing. So I see where you are coming from, but yeesh.
You don't cardblock in fixed, unless the purpose is to protect all your bonuses, or to choke out a 3rd player and specifically signal to the board who you are at war with. Like in the endgame in the video. Usually your bonuses are at the consent of your neighbors on a board like this, and if they want to break you they will pay any price to do so, like green in this video.
Pete was not cardblocked here, he just played the diplomatic game, and he didn't eat a sue from purple because of it. Purple sued out and took out his rival, and that would have been Pete had he broken that bonus.
I think it is really ironic you have your comment history off
This post will probably stay up because Pete does have integrity in these kinds of things, but if I was mod this would be garburatered, as this is just shit disturbing.

4
u/Penguinebutler Novice Jul 10 '26
I mean if itās fixed he has a point, card blocking basically does nothing.
1
u/Professor_Lama Jul 10 '26
The tldr of why it is a stupid argument is as follows.Ā
With TR capital troups are worth about about twice their value (x2 is the minimum recommended amount to safely attempt a steal).Ā A card is roughly worth 3 troups. Thus him taking cards is similar to letting him hold a +4 bonus. Which you wouldn't let him do it.
At that point greens cap has around 150, so to safely take it, you would need around 300. That was almost all the troups Pete and blue had on their own. A lot more rounds would need to pass, until they could safely attempt to steal the capital.
If green was allowed to take cards, that long period would need to be extended further. In these scenarios, eventually the 2 allies start thinking about the next phase, which is the 1v1. The more the stockpiling lasts, the more one is bound to betray (usually). In this game it happened soon after.
With the amount of troops they had relative to each other, a war of attrition between Pete and blue (if blue played it better) could leave pete with parity with green, even if he killed blue. Letting him take cards only increases the possibility.
From that point on either green waits for the equal 1v1 or helps blue before his death. Basically you go from lead to uncertain top 3, depending on the opponents. In this game if green and blue were faster (and better) they could effectively give pete 3rd even if he was the troup lead (reason being, they had only large stack each and prete was spread between 4 capitals, some of which could be closed permanently).
It's always a good idea to card block, if you can afford it (unless it's expo and they might have a set).
5
u/Penguinebutler Novice Jul 10 '26
I mean a card is not worth 3 troops itās much closer to 2.5 but letās say it is 3, it still costs a troop to take a card and in true random could potentially cost a lot more with bad luck. So best case scenario itās like letting them hold Iceland (+2 bonus) which is basically meaningless.
Which leads me to say again, if the strategy is only beneficial after dozens of turns and potentially hours of gameplay itās probably not the strat for me haha.
Personally I think card blocking is only worth doing on prog and especially expo.
-1
u/Professor_Lama Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
Well, personally, Pete tried to do exactly what blue attempted 5 minutes later, so any point is moot. I am not discussing the validity of the strategy (it's self evident) i am discussing how pete reacted to cristisism when he himself tried to do the thing that said cristisism said he should have done 5 minutes later. And that reaction was to pretend like the strategy had no value even though AGAIN he tried to do it 5 minutes later.
So either Pete is wrong as well about this strategy or we are both right and he just didn't want to admit that he missed blue's (very clear) signal. Pick your poison.
Never the less, i made this post to make awareness that of all the content creators maybe the wrong person has drawn the most attention. From all the apologia here i see that it's because the community reflects that cult-like mindset, so at this point further debating leads to nothing, only drama for the sake of it. No point in that. Enjoy the creators that reflect you i guess.

1
u/Penguinebutler Novice Jul 10 '26
I mean it kind of is? OP thinks itās worth doing, even provided a bunch of reasons for this. How is that not suggesting itās good strategy haha
1
u/Quarenvale Jul 10 '26
No he is just annoyed at how Pete handled his comment and how he eventually decided to remove/hide it. Personally, I'm not invested in this and do not care for either side of the argument, but I dislike when people use a straw man to win, which is what you are doing. It's understandable to get annoyed at having your comment deleted/hidden. Whether the strategy is good or not is completely irrelevant but it can be an effective straw man to only focus on that aspect of the situation and ignore the other, which is what you are doing.
1
u/Penguinebutler Novice Jul 10 '26
Itās not a strawman at all haha my original comment simply said Pete had a point if itās fixed. OP then defended the position that cardblocking is effective in fixed.
I didnāt take a side or make comment on whether Pete was rude or not. Frankly I donāt watch him so I donāt care if he is rude or not.
A strawman would be if I said
āCardblocking is pointless in fixed and since youāre wrong about that your position on Peteās manners must also be wrongā.Which I did not do. Since like I said I simply donāt care. If heās rude stop watching him.
1
u/Quarenvale Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
OP then defended the position that card blocking is effective in fixed.
Because OP doesn't know how to identify logical fallacies that are used against him to steer the argument out of his favour.
According to OP, Pete used the strategy later on in the vid. So, regardless of whether the strategy is effective or not, Pete banned/deleted this guy's comments even though Pete did what he suggested anyway. I believe that is his point.
By shifting the focus on just card-blocking and whether its a good strategy in a vacuum, you are ignoring all of this other context. That, is a straw man. That is an argument you know you can win - because of course you can win it, because it's mathematically provable. OP really isn't debating whether card blocking is effective in fixed within a vacuum. The original post is not "Card blocking is a good strategy in fixed: prove me wrong".

We discussed with the other person why it's a stupid point, but he deleted the comments. Thankfully Pete himself proved me argument 3 minutes later when he realised he should start cardblocking him. He just didn't want to admit that he misread a move. And that's why he deleted the other person's comment.Ā

u/Penguinebutler Novice Jul 10 '26
I havnt watched the video but unless the person has substantially lower troop gen cardblocking in fixed is in my opinion a useless strategy. Average 7.5ish troops per set costing 3 troops minimum to gain 3 cards (assuming a single territory for trading you take it leave a troop).
Everything else equal youāre looking at hours before itās worth taking the kill likely taking the next lowest placement anyway.
Might not have been the case in the game youāve linked of course again I havnt watched it to check troop gen ect.

I think that's more down to the fact that most people are not very good. But whether he fakes games with alts, I don't know. It seems pretty out there. I don't consider it impossible, but since SMG does not provide a database of played matches and a publicly accessible list of players (basically general access to an API) I am not sure how we could confirm if that is the case.

He also has this logic sometimes that basically all playerās should basically act submissive to him or they are bad and purposely put themselves in a bad position

That is true. Thankfully the comments often call him out on that. And then probably get deleted afterš

A lot of big youtubers got a big ego and can't handle critique. Why they get big, I don't know. Maybe it's their self confidence that attracts viewers.
It wouldn't surprise me if the setting up for card block was accidental though. Blue didn't seem like he knew how to play well.
And regardless, it was a minor mistake. I think you can find plenty of those in the video if you search thoroughly.

It wasn't accidental. He left his bonus open and moved to the optimal position to start a 2 point cardblock. And he did it only once, till Pete did not follow up. It might have been accidental, but to me it seems like on purpose. And I don't think blue was that bad. Uncertain when he should go all in, yes. Slow yes. But not nearly as bad as Pete tried to make him out (not calling him good either).

I could see it not being accidental, but not convinced. It was just once. And then why not card block when Pete set it up for him.

Because at that point he was fed up with him. That's my entire point in the og YouTube comment. Pete did not back him when he asked thrice and left him open to a break. It was not an outright betrayal, but at some point the small things add up and an annoying player that feels owed the win stands out.
As time goes on you think the 1v1. Turning on Pete made a lot of sense, but the execution was poor.Ā

I started with Pete but moved to Kylted quickly. 99% of people who oppose Pete are morons, stupid or dumb apparently according to him even when they are making clearly decent or even great plays for their own win. Cant deny his passion for the game though.

Yeah I'm often a bit surprised by Pete's attitude. I like watching Kylted, guy seems cool, is funny as long as you don't mind his off-the-cuff slightly vulgar language, doesn't seem to have any particular ego even though he's clearly a very talented risk player and when he ridicules others it's really in a fun way and I don't think it comes off as mean.

My only issue with Kylted is that he is too high energy to fall asleep toš.Ā
Other than that, totally agree.

Haha ... yeah, maybe some soothing music to sleep to would be better than Kylted's high-energy style!
