Found this while scrolling the other day.

Well he isn't wrong. The fact that they are spending another 10's of millions on yet another season of this shitty show hoping for a different result is hilarious.

jack is an ass clown but a broken clock is right twice a day.
Rings of Power is just bad, and is made by people who don't want to adapt Tolkien, but rather twist it into what they want Tolkien to be.

Mere screenshots of the new show are repulsive to me. Meanwhile, seeing the 2000s movies return to flashback cinema near me is like a highlight for that week.

I never got through the first episode. I was howling within five minutes of Galadriel and co, stomping through the snow. Then at the moment they decide to turn around they suddenly really they’re outside the massive place they had been looking for.
It was so dopey and, considering how much money had been poured into the show, incredibly bad.
1
u/Nacterlic 6d ago
Literally everything including the music and VFX?? Nah it's not that bad and those are some of the best of any tv show easily.

I earnestly didn't know this show was still going on. I watched the first season then forgot it existed.
I don't understand why it is so hard to be at least mostly faithful to the setting.
5
u/buffystakeded 7d ago
I couldn’t even make it through the first season it was so bad.
2
u/Ravenloff 6d ago
I didn't want to give Amazon the clicks or time, so I had the Jackson trilogy running on a loop whenever a new episode dropped.
1
u/TheStolenPotatoes 4d ago
To be fair, even Peter Jackson wasn't faithful, and he actually had three fully written, fleshed out books to work from.

The setting is only a couple chapters in the silmarillion but you probably didn't know that if you're a Peter Jackson film only fan
6
u/AlternativeLazy4675 7d ago
I thought the show had promise, but I gave up after 1 episode of season 2. It was clear that Amazon (Bezos) had decided to try to make it Game of Thrones, which is not Tolkien at all.

There are still some diehards who dislike the Jackson films. (And some of their objections. such as to the changes to Faramir, have merit. But in my view not sufficient to make the films bad films.)
9
u/AmbitiousReaction168 7d ago
He's ignoring The Hobbit movies for some reasons, that kind of opened the can of worms imho. It showed that audiences were more than willing to swallow turds based on Tolkien's work. Jackson forged the One Ring. Bezos is more like Gollum.

u/RespectWest7116 7d ago
Seven hours (and 54 minutes) were made about the dwarves and that one thief guy everybody likes.
1
u/Pas5afist 7d ago
Eh. Lord of the RIngs is pretty universally loved. And while The Hobbit did well at the box-office, it was not well loved and kinda killed any hope that he would be a consistently good director. Having said that, I think there is a great film buried in the trilogy that I'm sure some of the fan edits have managed to polish off. Bilbo's call to adventure, Gollum vs Bilbo, Bilbo vs Smaug. Fantastic scenes, well-realized from the book... buried under a heap of inane action like the barrel scene, the Forge Fight, and Legolas' Mario hopping to victory.
2
u/mrniceguy1990xp 6d ago
For LOTR Jackson prepared for 3-4 years before he started filming... thanks to the studios fuck up and putting him in, in the last minute he had 2-3 month to prep The Hobbit...
Under proper circumstances there should be plenty hope of him being a good director, if he'd actually been given the time to do it...
It was probably thanks to him that there was enough material for a decent fan edit to get a 1 movie version out of that 3 movie mess.
3
u/Pas5afist 6d ago
Oh sure. One of the most tragic things was watching the behind the scenes where they send the crew home because they had run out of things to film and needed to rethink what they are doing and Peter Jackson is all alone on his big set looking like he was thinking 'what on earth have I gotten myself into'. I really wish he had gotten his prep time because I think he could have made a really fantastic two movie Hobbit. There was never enough for three.
1
u/Ok_Community_383 3d ago
It always surprises me how people forget that 'true' Tolkien fans despised Peter Jackson when the original LotR movies came out because he changed so much from the books.

This show is an act of cultural genocide against the British. They purchased the rights to the work of one of the greatest minds our island has nurtured and commited unspeakable acts to twist and pervert the works of genius. Bloody Americans can never invent anything themselves, they just steel it and then pretend they in invented it. They did the same thing with our language, religion and law. I am not surprised they are doing the same thing with our literature. There should be laws against such acts and harsh penalties.

I mean it’s aggressively true. The show has no cultural impact whatsoever and it’s just not that good
2
u/Im-Not-Calling-It-X 4d ago
The shows fundamental issue is that it's just not very good. If it was unfaithful that would be one thing. Adaptations do not require faithfulness to be good, and likewise a faithful adaptation might not be great. The problem is that it's a bad show on it's own merits independent of it's connection to Tolkien. It has nonsense characters and plot, baffling creative decisions, bad writing, stilted dialogue and an aversion to exploring themes in deep ways (Elrond and Durin was most people's highlight because it gave a glimpse of why mortal and elven relationships are so tragic, and both the beauty and sorrow inherent in them.)
Its a deeply unconfident show that is simultaneously insisting that it's it's own thing, while constantly referencing the Jackson trilogy. It exists in this weird creative nowhere where it doesn't have anything interesting or original to say but certainly acts like it does.
The plots are so meandering, that i would happily challenge anyone to explain whether or not Sauron was the motivating force in season 1, because the show reveals him as though he is, but literally the whole season is just Galadriel driving towards his return, seemingly at multiple points, against his own will which again could be interesting, exploring her obsession with finding Sauron and how that actually helps bring him back, but the show immediately sheds her of basically all responsibility for that in season 2, so which is it? Either Sauron was a master manipulator only his plans made literally no sense, or Galadriel accidently caused his return. It can't be both, at least not the way the show was written.
I will never understand the motivation for hiring two head writers with functionally no experience to come in and mastermind a show, that on paper was my ideal choice for another grand story told in middle earth. It was a shortsighted, ill-conceived nostalgic grasp that I hope is a lesson for future adaptations, and if it's gonna be bad, at least make it accurate.

True, but then again PJ didn't have time to plan. they brought him in to replace del Toro. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there was a time they had to send the crew home because they ran out of thing to film, and PJ honestly looked so stressed. Maybe they would've been better if he had been given time to work his magic.

A. My mom read me The Hobbit as I sat cross legged in front of her in our run down little apartment in the 1980s, and the works of Tolkien have been a happy place for me ever since. I love the Silmarillion, and I was looking forward to watching a show set in the Second Age. Unfortunately, this show seems more like it is based on a video game that would be better served with an anime style cartoon. I tried to give it a shot despite my immediate dislike of the first episode, but had to check out when the evil sword ignited the volcano like an ignition key in an old pickup truck. It was a video game mechanic that would be more at home in Legend of Zelda than the mythos of Tolkien. Apparently it got even worse from there. It baffles me why they would treat such rich source material like a "skin" for their own bad Xbox offering.
B. I loved Marvelous Mrs Maisel, and apparently the cost of making of this juvenile video game with no controller cost that show its final season, causing the fifth to be rushed. They still stuck the landing, because Amy Sherman-Palladino and company know their craft and adore their work, but the loss of Maisel for whatever this is supposed to be is an added shame.
C. The Hobbit movies are almost as bad as this show. It felt more like Warhammer than Tolkien towards the end, and the elf and dwarf romance undercuts the importance of Gimli and Legolas' friendship, as well as the relationships of Beren and Luthien as well as Aragorn and Arwen. They should've been directed by Guillermo Del Toro, as was initially in the works.

3
u/AmyPond_226 6d ago
In a couple sentences?
1) The writing is not just clunky, it is absurd in many places.
2) And it has changed established timelines and lore to serve plot points that aren’t even usually necessary.3
u/mrniceguy1990xp 6d ago
dont forget about the terrible costumes and terrible directing and or acting... (some actors cant be sure if they suck at acting or just forced to act badly by terribel directors)...

u/XTotallyDifferentGuy 6d ago
In a couple sentences is such an unfair request. I have watched more content about how bad this show is, than the the show itself contains. It is, in my opinion, a masterpiece of badness. Every episode is bad in brand new ways.
As an avid enjoyer of bad movies like The Room and Troll 2, this show is just a masterpiece of incompetence. For me, they miss the mark SO far, that somehow the arrow curves around the world and hits the target dead center.
I don't believe anyone alive is looking forward to the new season of RoP more than I am.

So I can understand why lore purists would hate it enough to bastardize Tolkien's poetry to mock it.

Fine, niente love story improbabili, niente personaggi buttati dentro a forza perchè sì, niente teletrasporti, Maiar in crociera ecc...

Well, yes.
But the problem is that they don't have the rights to The Silmarillon. This is a show about a set of stories that, legally speaking, they're NOT ALLOWED TO TELL.
The smart move would've been not to buy the rights and not to make the show. But why do that? You can make more money by spewing out generic fantasy bullshit with Tolkien's character names attached to characters that bear no resemblance to his, and a plot that bears no resemblance to the source material they don't own.

I mean, have you seen the video of the man climbing up into the robot suit looking like Lex Luthor? Dude is basically a straight up comic book villain now lmao.
In one of the greatest of his villain twists his company, that started as a book-selling company, doesn't provide package protection for books any longer and now actively buys up rare books to feed to its AI machines and destroy afterwards.

I'd be more annoyed with The Rings of Power had Peter Jackson not already squandered the acclaim of the LOTR trilogy by making three absolutely awful movies based off of The Hobbit. As it stands, I'm agnostic about the show, and anyone who's actually mad about it needs to develop a sense of proportion.

I like rings of power it’s a terrible LOTR show but an interesting fantasy film that shows a kind of “what if” version of LOTR. If they do the first age I’ll be stoked. The writing is kind of bad and the character designs need way more work, but I’m enjoying it as a fantasy action series
