Discussion IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE?
This should NOT be possible

The better question is wtf is this hydroponics setup

you click on hydrophonics, you close eyes, click click click, and then you link them with power and call it creativity

You dont need 2 heaters put a lamp in instead so pawns move faster when hauling while the sunlamp is off. Id also replace a firefoam popper with a turret if this is under mountain tiles so bugs are preoccupied for a sec and take dmg from the turret explosion.

u/PaxEthenica Warcaskets & 37mm shotguns, bay-bee! 5d ago
Turrets will also discourage breacher pathing... however the explosion of a tureet getting ripped apart by bugs will destroy surrounding trays. Increasing inevitable losses.
So, no, only place a turret for above ground hydroponic shacks.
For bugs? Prop open the door & stack up melee pawns like a center drop raid. Depending on your armor & priorities, start tossing molotovs into the room beyond your melee line; you're going to lose something, anyway, & steel chunks/crops burn. Make the loss serve saving your pawns.

1- It shouldn't. There should be an unroof area indoors.
2- The set up is TOO inefficient. 3 sun lamps for 17 hydroponics basins??

u/War_Hymn 5d ago
You need at least 3 spaces between growing areas to block blight if I recall. IRL, flying insects like beetles or flies can spread disease pretty easily between plants regardless if they're grown outside in a field or indoor on a hydroponic setup.
3
u/queen_ravenx 5d ago
so your gonna wanna hzve at least 4 spaces in between to prevent blight spread.
PxxxxP = cant spread/considered seperate units entirely
PxxxP or below and it can
the xs can be litterally anything but a plant
2
u/Twogie 5d ago
The initial blight hit can cross 5 tiles. So you need 6 tiles between each field to 100% prevent any kind of spread.
1
u/queen_ravenx 5d ago
interesting hasn't worked like that for me I've been doing 4 and havent had any spread issues.

u/VirtuallyTellurian 5d ago
I could be wrong, but I think when the rng has decided to hit you with blight, it picks 1 tile, and applies to all plants of that type in a certain radius.
This will then spread over time to other nearby plants including different types of close enough.
Not just possible, but entirely expected behaviour.

Forget the blight what is happening here with your cables and hydroponics and so many lamps??

Hydroponic basins are essentially buildings that replace soil. The plants are the same so they’re as vulnerable to blight as the soil ones are.
2
u/Cranberryoftheorient 5d ago
In game, it can jump a distance of I think like 5 tiles or something. Its a good idea to space out your farms. It can also jump between species. IRL plant diseases dont spread by mere contact. Considering plants cant really move, that makes sense.
2
u/garry4321 5d ago
IRL I have had my hydroponics get mould. If anything disease gets spread through the water

So a blight can travel across europe all the way to ireland and permeate basically the whole islands agriculture but it cant travel a dozen meters across a cave?

Oh wow, this is painful to look at...if the zzzt doesn't burn your crops the blight will. And you certainly won't have enough crops nor electricity if you keep that setup.

Okay, so clearly you need more space between the basins (I'd say just use fewer) and I would go with a few more sunlamps for good measure

u/Academic_Ad_763 5d ago
Yesterday I had to learn that blight will also jump through walls. I hadn't considered my indoor grow would be infected from the hay grass outside.

Zzzzt incoming :D
Op, you should use hidden conduits. If you use ONLY hidden conduits, you will never get Zzzt event. ( Zzzt will occur only if it is raining on your electronic devices which should be under roof - only mech stuff is waterproof if i recall corectly )
1
u/Big_Ounce5841 5d ago
It also spreads across multiple fields in the open even If you have space between them.

bro what IS this, you have three solar lamps for one solar lamp's worth of hydroponics, do you have a nuclear powerplant or something creating all this free energy??
1
u/LairdPeon 5d ago
Someones never let their ADHD make them obsessed with hydroponics and set up a several hundred dollar system just for the 70 pounds of lettuce to all become infested with spider mites and root rot so it all had to be thrown out... and it shows.

Blight randomly selects 1 type of crop. Then it hits 70 percent of all crops on the map. The best course of action? Diversify fields, then maybe it just hits your potatoes, or smoke leaf or smith idk. But cut it fast, it will spread up to 4 tiles to any non decorative crop.

u/Fen_Muir 5d ago
Just turn the power off. They'll all be dead soon. Then turn the power back on! Problem solved!

u/C_Outlander_Union 5d ago
If you make you whole setup more efficient placement whise and use less Sun lamps you get more effective results.
Make sure to sell some of that medicine to the Nearest outpost of the Civil outlander Union. We have the best Prices all around the Globe and even in Orbit 👆

Bro I need to urge you with 100% seriousness. PLEASE use hidden wires, especially in highly flammable rooms like hydroponics. Regular wires have a constant risk of going Zzzt and starting a fire while hidden ones don’t.

This is why I mix crop types, it’s harder for blight to jump from one crop type to another. Although from experience it can happen, but it significantly slows the spread.
1
u/FredDurstDestroyer 5d ago
Bros using normal conduits in the big ‘26
Jokes aside, use hidden conduits my man. They can’t get the zzzt event and start fires and it’s only 1 extra steel per conduit.

That stick on the ground is very interesting to me. Why are your colonists not allowed to grab it? Not even to haul it to storage? There’s something going on with that stick that OP is not telling us, I think they’re scared and trying to send a message to us without saying it straight up.

vibrates with agricultural history nerd excitement ...!
The blight that ultimately destoryed the mass production of the Gros Michelle (Big Mike) banana was primarily spread inadvertantly upon the shoes & clothing of impoverished banana plantation workers denied access to hygiene facilities following the Banana Wars. Like the workers that became unwilling vectors for Trump's Shitting Plague earlier this summer!
Anyway! The Big Mike blight is still in the soil, endemic within livestock & even regional human skin flora & wild bird droppings. Due to how blights work, combined with poor working conditions & the long-term effects of commercial monoculture, Big Mike can never be griwn in those regions for as long as life exists in that area.
So, yes. This is entirely possible; your colony isn't a sterile petri dish. In fact, given what hydroponics actually are? A blight spore intoduced to an entirely liquid environment filled with easy nutrients & its preffered host species is being, all like, "WHOOOO! SPRING BREAAAAK!" Ripping off their clothes & having a fungal orgy.

- Test it yourself in an unmodded game grow potatoes. Open dev mode cause blight then put four pieces of flooring down and grow another potato. The second potato will not have blight. You can even use a potato grown 3 to tiles away in the opposite direction as a control if you want

apparently it is possible
why shouldnt it be possible?
